Correlate those details across systems, but redact credentials and sensitive values. MCP guidance does not define a universal audit-event schema, so teams must choose fields, coverage, access controls, and retention to fit their deployment.
What should an MCP tool-call audit event contain?
Use structured events rather than free-form messages so operators can search, correlate, and review activity consistently. The following is a practical schema synthesized from MCP security guidance, not a protocol-mandated field list.

| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Timestamp | Event time, with a consistent timezone and precision across participating systems. | Places the attempt and execution in sequence with related events. |
| Event or correlation ID | A stable identifier for the event and, where available, an ID that links the client, gateway, MCP server, and downstream service records. | Helps reconstruct a call across system boundaries. MCP guidance recommends correlation IDs for internal troubleshooting but does not prescribe a cross-product format. |
| Actor or principal | The authenticated identity to which the authorization decision applied. | Connects the request to an accountable identity rather than merely a session. |
| Client and server identity | The MCP client and the MCP server handling the request, using deployment-appropriate identifiers. | Distinguishes which integration and server handled an operation. |
| Tool and activity | The tool name and activity type, such as tools/call. |
Shows what kind of MCP action was attempted. |
| Authorization decision | Allow or deny, with relevant policy or policy-version context when needed to explain the decision. | Separates enforcement from execution and makes a denial investigable. |
| Outcome | Success, failure, or denial, plus a suitable error class. Keep detailed internal errors access-controlled. | Shows whether an allowed call completed and helps distinguish failure types. |
| Deployment context | Relevant environment or service context, and policy version when needed to interpret the event. | Helps explain differences between deployments or policy states. |
Record only parameter details needed for accountability or investigation. Classify fields before logging them and redact sensitive values rather than retaining raw arguments by default.

Define the event boundary before selecting a logging system. A trail limited to tools/call may answer who attempted a tool action and what happened, but it will not necessarily capture discovery, resource access, or changes that affected the call.
#1 Best Overall
- High-speed USB 3.0 performance of up to 150MB/s(1) [(1) Write to drive up to 15x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); varies by drive capacity. Up to 150MB/s read speed. - Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
- Sleek, durable metal casing
- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
- Tool execution: Record successful calls, denied attempts, and execution failures.
- Discovery and reads: Decide whether to include activity such as
tools/listand resource reads. - Authorization: Preserve the allow-or-deny decision, including requests that never execute.
- Configuration changes: Include relevant changes when they can alter available tools or access policy.
Microsoft’s documentation describes MCP traffic logging that includes request and response activity and protocol sub-activities such as tools/call. That illustrates the breadth a logging scope can have; it is a vendor capability, not an MCP requirement. See Microsoft’s MCP traffic logging documentation.
How do you keep the audit trail safe?
Exclude secrets and sensitive values
The Model Context Protocol project’s authorization tutorial says: “Never log Authorization headers, tokens, codes, or secrets.” Scrub sensitive headers and query-string values, and apply field-level redaction to structured events. Avoid copying full request and response bodies into general-purpose logs when selected metadata is sufficient.

- The durable, light-weight design of the Turbo Attaché 3 USB 3.0 Flash Drive is the essential mobile storage solution
- Perfect for transferring large files such as movies, videos, photos, music & documents
- Transfer speeds up to 10 times faster than standard USB 2.0 flash drives
- Convenient sliding collar, and cap-less design protects your content when not in use
- Compatible with most PC and Mac laptop and desktop computers with USB 3.0 ports
Do not use a session identifier as authorization
Treat Mcp-Session-Id as untrusted input, not proof of identity or permission. The MCP authorization tutorial says authorization must be checked for the request, not tied to the session identifier. Keep the event’s actor field aligned with the principal that was actually authorized.

Validate tokens for the receiving server
The MCP authorization security considerations require a server to validate that a presented token was issued specifically for that server. A token stored, cached, or logged can be stolen and later used in requests that appear legitimate, which is another reason not to put credentials in the audit record. See the MCP authorization security considerations.

- Retractable design with a reversible USB Type-C connector and a traditional USB connector
- High-speed USB 3.1 performance of up to 150MB/s Read Speeds (USB Type-C port with USB 3.1, Gen. 1/USB 3.0 support required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device.)
- SanDisk Memory Zone app for Android (available on Google Play; Download and installation required) lets you easily manage and back up content on your smartphone and tablet
Control access to the logs
Restrict who can read detailed events, apply your organization’s secure logging and retention controls, and keep detailed internal errors behind appropriate access controls. Clients should receive only generic errors where exposing implementation details would be unsafe.
How to implement and verify the trail
- Set scope: Decide whether to capture only
tools/callor also discovery, resource reads, authorization outcomes, and relevant configuration changes. - Define the event schema: Standardize timestamps, event and correlation IDs, actor, client and server identities, tool, authorization decision, outcome, and any necessary policy or deployment context.
- Instrument both decision and execution: Emit a record for denied attempts as well as allowed calls, and make it possible to correlate events across the client, gateway, MCP server, and downstream service.
- Apply redaction and access controls: Exclude credentials and unnecessary sensitive values, restrict access to detailed logs, and set retention according to your security and operational needs.
- Verify authorization context: Validate tokens for the intended MCP server, authorize each request rather than trusting a session ID, and ensure the logged actor matches the authorized principal.
- Test representative cases in a controlled environment: Exercise allowed, denied, failed, and sensitive-argument calls. Inspect the resulting events to confirm they identify who initiated the operation, what was attempted, the decision, and the outcome—without exposing secrets or sensitive fields.
- Confirm collection coverage: Check which events your application, cloud audit service, or security gateway actually captures, where they are stored, who can access them, and what retention and costs apply.
Where can you collect MCP audit events?
Application logs, cloud audit services, and security gateways can complement one another. None is established by the cited documentation as universally sufficient or required; confirm that the chosen path covers the events and context your deployment needs.

| Approach | What the documentation establishes | What to check in your deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Application-level structured logs | MCP authorization guidance recommends redaction, correlation IDs for internal troubleshooting, and keeping secrets out of logs. | Whether successful and denied calls include principal and tool context; whether records correlate with downstream actions; and how access and retention are controlled. |
| Google Cloud MCP audit logs | Logs are generated per service and categorized by IAM permission type. MCP Data Access audit logs are disabled by default, require explicit enablement, and can add logging charges. | Which relevant permission types are enabled, which project receives the logs, expected volume and cost, and how events will be retained and queried. See Google Cloud’s MCP audit-log examples. |
| Microsoft Global Secure Access logging and firewall | Microsoft documents visibility into MCP requests and responses, including protocol sub-activities such as tools/call, and a centralized MCP firewall for visibility and policy enforcement. |
Whether your traffic passes through the supported path, what event detail is available, whether centralized enforcement is needed, and the product’s current availability and operational overhead. See Microsoft’s MCP firewall documentation. |
What does a useful review look like?
An operator investigating an event should be able to follow its identifiers across the relevant logs and determine the actor, client and server, tool, authorization decision, and execution outcome. They should also be able to distinguish a denied request from an allowed request that failed during execution. If those questions cannot be answered—or if the record reveals credentials or unnecessary sensitive data—adjust the schema, instrumentation, or redaction before relying on the trail.
