No. Negative acceleration does not always mean an object is slowing down. It means acceleration points in the negative direction of the chosen axis. To tell whether speed is increasing or decreasing, compare the signs of velocity and acceleration.
What negative acceleration actually means
Acceleration describes how velocity changes, including changes in direction. In one-dimensional motion, its sign indicates the direction of that change relative to the axis you choose. OpenStax puts it plainly: “A negative acceleration component is simply an acceleration in the negative direction along that axis.” (OpenStax, Physics, section 3.1.)

The choice of positive direction is a convention, not a property of the object. If right is positive, leftward acceleration is negative. If you instead define left as positive, the same physical acceleration is positive. The motion has not changed; only its sign labels have. (OpenStax, College Physics 2e, section 2.4.)

How to tell whether the object is speeding up
For motion along one axis, compare velocity and acceleration. If they have the same sign, the magnitude of velocity increases and the object speeds up. If their signs are opposite, the magnitude of velocity decreases and the object slows down, as long as those directions remain unchanged. (OpenStax, College Physics 2e, section 2.4.)
#1 Best Overall
- Same signs: speed increases.
- Opposite signs: speed decreases.
A real example: moving left and gaining speed
Choose right as the positive direction. An object moving left has negative velocity. If it is also accelerating left, its acceleration is negative too. Because velocity and acceleration have the same sign, the object gains speed while moving left.
By contrast, an object moving right has positive velocity. A negative acceleration points left, opposite its motion, so its speed decreases while it continues moving right.

The sign comparison applies while the directions of velocity and acceleration stay as stated. If an object reaches zero velocity and reverses direction, assess the motion on either side of that instant separately. Acceleration’s sign alone is not a lasting label for “slowing down”: after the reversal, velocity may have the same sign as acceleration, and the object may speed up.

A quick method for motion problems
- Choose and state an axis: for example, “right is positive.”
- Assign velocity’s sign: positive if motion is rightward under that convention, negative if leftward.
- Assign acceleration’s sign: positive or negative according to the direction it points along the same axis.
- Compare the signs: matching signs mean speeding up; opposite signs mean slowing down, provided the directions persist.
