Need Internet for Just a Week? Here Are Your Temporary Wi-Fi Options

A week of internet access can come from a short-term mobile plan, phone tethering, a dedicated hotspot, or public Wi-Fi. Compare coverage, data, device compatibility, and start dates first.

Yes—you can get internet access for a week, usually through a short-term mobile data plan shared over your phone, a dedicated hotspot, or Wi-Fi at a local venue. The right choice depends on your location, device compatibility, data needs, and whether you need a dependable connection for multiple devices. One current example is a U.S.-only seven-day eSIM pass; it is not a worldwide offer.

What “temporary Wi-Fi” can mean

Wi-Fi is the wireless connection between your device and a nearby network. For a week of internet access, that network might come from a phone using cellular data, a dedicated portable hotspot, or a public venue. These options are not interchangeable: cellular-based access needs compatible mobile service and coverage, while public Wi-Fi depends on the venue and its access rules.

Which option fits a week?

Short-term prepaid service or eSIM

If you have a compatible phone, a temporary mobile plan can provide cellular data without relying on venue Wi-Fi. As of 2026, T-Mobile Prepaid lists a U.S. seven-day Pass eSIM for $25 plus taxes and fees. Its stated allowance is 50 GB of premium 5G data in the U.S. and 14 GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data. Those are separate allowances, not 64 GB of hotspot data. The offer requires a capable, compatible eSIM device, and T-Mobile says activation begins at purchase, so check the current terms and timing before buying. See T-Mobile Prepaid’s seven-day eSIM offer and terms; check eSIM compatibility details.

Tethering from your existing phone plan

Your phone may be able to share its cellular connection as a Wi-Fi hotspot, which can be convenient if you already have service. Before depending on it, check your plan’s hotspot allowance, speed limits or usage thresholds, phone compatibility, and coverage where you will be. “Unlimited” phone data does not necessarily mean unlimited high-speed hotspot data; the T-Mobile example above has a distinct hotspot allowance.

A dedicated portable hotspot

A portable hotspot uses cellular service to create a Wi-Fi network for nearby devices. It can be useful when several devices need access or you do not want to tether through your phone. Buying the device alone does not provide internet: you also need a compatible mobile data plan and usable network coverage. The FCC describes mobile Wi-Fi hotspots as devices used with commercially available mobile wireless internet service in an E-Rate order, not as a consumer product recommendation. T-Mobile separately lists prepaid data plans for hotspot devices. Read the FCC order and review T-Mobile Prepaid’s hotspot and tablet data plans.

Public Wi-Fi

Libraries, hotels, cafes, airports, and other venues may offer Wi-Fi, but hours, sign-in requirements, and availability vary by location. It can work for lighter use or as a backup, but do not count on continuous access for an entire week without confirming the specific venue’s policy. The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe today because most websites use encryption; check for HTTPS or a lock symbol in your browser. For sensitive tasks such as banking or online purchases on an unsecured network, CISA advises using cellular data instead. Read the FTC’s public Wi-Fi guidance and CISA’s advice on unsecured Wi-Fi.

How to choose before you pay

  • Confirm the location: Check whether the service is sold and supported in the country where you will use it, and verify coverage at your destination. A U.S. plan example does not establish availability elsewhere.
  • Check the total cost and clock: Compare the full price, taxes and fees, activation timing, renewal rules, and what happens when service expires. The T-Mobile seven-day pass listed above activates at purchase, so buying it early may start the service period before you need it.
  • Match data to the way you use it: Look for the high-speed data allowance and any reduced-speed conditions or other restrictions. Distinguish data for the phone itself from the plan’s hotspot allowance.
  • Verify device compatibility: For an eSIM, confirm that your phone supports eSIM and meets the provider’s compatibility requirements; check whether it must be carrier-unlocked. For a dedicated hotspot, confirm that the device is supported by the plan and works on the provider’s network.
  • Count the devices: Tethering may be enough for one or a few devices. A dedicated hotspot is another way to share a cellular connection, but it requires its own compatible service.
  • Plan for reliability and privacy: Cellular service depends on local coverage, while public Wi-Fi depends on a venue’s access and operating hours. Prefer cellular data for sensitive transactions on an unsecured public network.

A quick decision path

  1. Have a compatible phone and need a week of mobile data? Compare short-term prepaid plans or eSIMs available where you are going, checking the start time, total cost, and hotspot allowance.
  2. Already have a phone plan? Check its hotspot rules and coverage first; tethering may avoid a separate service purchase.
  3. Need to connect several devices or keep phone tethering separate? Consider a dedicated hotspot only after confirming that a compatible data plan is available for it.
  4. Only need occasional, low-stakes access? Check nearby public Wi-Fi locations and their hours and rules. Treat them as venue-dependent access, not a guaranteed week-long connection.

What varies by place

The seven-day plan described here is a U.S. example. The available information does not establish equivalent short-term offers in other countries, coverage in a particular city, local public Wi-Fi access, or whether a library lends hotspots. Check providers and venues for the exact destination rather than assuming the same options apply everywhere.
