In-flight entertainment is not one standard product. Your experience depends on the airline, aircraft, route, cabin and seat: you may get a seatback touchscreen, a local Wi-Fi portal for your own device, live television, or no usable system at all. Check the exact flight before departure, then bring downloaded content and wired headphones as a backup.
What counts as in-flight entertainment?
Airlines generally provide one or more of these systems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Seatback entertainment: A screen in the seat or bulkhead with on-demand movies, television, music, podcasts, games, maps and flight information.
- Personal-device entertainment: Your phone, tablet or laptop connects to an aircraft Wi-Fi network and opens an airline portal. The portal can work without purchasing general internet access.
- Internet connectivity: Access to the wider web. It may be free, paid, membership-based, limited to messaging, or unavailable. It is separate from the airline’s own entertainment catalog.
- Live content: Depending on the aircraft and route, this can include live television, news, sports, music channels and destination information.
- Connected systems: Newer seatback platforms may offer logins, saved progress, recommendations and trip updates. These features are installed only on selected aircraft.
For example, Delta describes more than 1,000 hours of seatback movies, television, live satellite TV, music, podcasts and games, while its Delta Sync system adds personalization on selected fleets. The catalog and features are not guaranteed on every Delta flight. See Delta’s onboard-services page and Delta Sync information.

An aircraft swap can change a seatback screen into a bring-your-own-device system, or remove entertainment altogether. Use this checklist:

- Open the airline app or website and retrieve your reservation, or enter the flight number.
- Look for “In-flight entertainment,” “Onboard experience,” “Amenities,” “Wi-Fi,” “Seatback screen” or “Personal device entertainment.”
- Check again shortly before departure because the assigned aircraft can change.
- Read the wording carefully: an aircraft-family description is not a guarantee for your specific flight.
American provides a “What’s on my flight” lookup by flight number through its entertainment FAQ. Delta identifies equipped flights in booking results, pre-flight messages, the Fly Delta app, aircraft decals or crew guidance; details are on its onboard Wi-Fi page.
Pack an entertainment kit that survives a system failure
- A fully charged phone or tablet, plus charging cable.
- An airline-compliant power bank.
- Wired headphones or earbuds. They are the most dependable fallback for different seat jacks and failed Bluetooth pairing.
- Bluetooth headphones if you prefer them, but verify that the seatback system supports Bluetooth.
- A Bluetooth transmitter only if you have checked the seat’s connector and transmitter compatibility.
- Downloaded films, episodes, podcasts, music, audiobooks, books, games, maps and work files.
- The airline app. American says its app may be required on phones and tablets; laptops can use the browser portal. See American’s viewing instructions.
- A device holder only when the aircraft provides one or the accessory can be used without blocking the tray table, aisle or safety equipment.
For children, add child-safe headphones, age-appropriate offline content and one screen-free activity. A splitter works only when its connector matches the device. Do not assume the onboard catalog has parental controls or suitable programming.

- Get Outside with Klymit: Focus on soaking up your time outside with friends and family and spend less time worrying about your lightweight camping gear
Using a seatback screen
Tap the screen or use the control at your seat to wake it, then browse categories such as movies, television, music, podcasts, games and the flight map. Where offered, open the audio or subtitle menu to select language, captions or audio description. Catalogs vary with licensing region, route, aircraft, cabin and date; an airline’s advertised title count does not mean every passenger sees every title.
Recommended Free Tools
Connect headphones before starting a program and keep the volume low enough to hear announcements. Bluetooth may be available on some newer systems but is not universal. A standard wired connection remains the safest assumption.
Rank #3
- Gel Technology: Constructed with gel material that conforms to your body shape and distributes weight evenly across the seating surface
- Pressure Relief Support: Designed to provide cushioning support for individuals experiencing discomfort from sciatica, tailbone, coccyx, and back concerns during prolonged sitting
- Versatile Use: Suitable for use on office chairs, wheelchairs, car seats, and truck seats to enhance sitting comfort throughout your day
- Ergonomic Comfort: Engineered to support proper posture and reduce pressure points while sitting for extended periods at work or during travel
If the screen is frozen or blank
- Check whether the screen has a power, home or reset control.
- Do not repeatedly force controls; report a seat-specific fault to the cabin crew.
- Ask whether another seat or personal-device option is available.
- Switch to downloaded content if the system cannot be restored. Any service recovery depends on the airline’s policy; compensation is not automatic.
Connecting your own device
- Turn on airplane mode.
- Turn Wi-Fi back on manually.
- Join the aircraft’s published Wi-Fi network.
- Wait for the captive portal. If it does not appear, open a browser and enter the airline’s onboard address.
- Select the free entertainment section, rather than a paid internet plan or an outside streaming app.
- Choose content and connect headphones.
- Stow or hold the device whenever the crew instructs you to do so.
American example
On a compatible American flight, connect to AA-Inflight, open a browser and enter aainflight.com if needed, then select “View free entertainment” or the entertainment icon. American says movies, television and audio are free on Wi-Fi-equipped flights, and that entertainment may not be available until the aircraft reaches 10,000 feet. These are American-specific instructions, not a universal activation rule. Details: connection guide and how-to-watch guide.
Alaska example
Alaska directs passengers to the Alaskawifi.com network and portal. Its basic connectivity options may not support streaming or large attachment downloads. See Alaska’s Wi-Fi guidance.
Rank #4
- CloudAir Support: This airplane seat cushion is equipped with 49 pressure reducing airbags that can evenly distribute weight, effectively reducing pressure on the coccyx and buttocks and relieving fatigue caused by prolonged sitting(✅ Correct: Inflate to 50–60% capacity; the air chamber should be full but yield noticeably when pressed by hand. On an airplane, 30–40% inflation is recommended.❌ Incorrect: Do not over-inflate until rigid; sitting on an over-inflated cushion will be uncomfortable and negate the pressure-relieving effect.)
- Built in Inflation Pump Design: Compared with other inflatable seat cushions, it does not rely on an external inflation pump and is very convenient to use. Simply press the surface inflation button repeatedly(Tip for easier inflation: Start by blowing one breath of air in, then use the manual pump to adjust the inflation level.)
- Adjustable Comfort: After inflation is complete, you can press the surface adjustment button to slowly release the gas inside the cushion to change its support. You can adjust to the best comfort according to your actual feelings(✅When storing, be sure to open the exhaust valve to release all the air.)
- Portable and Widely Used: When storing, first exhaust the air inside the cushion, then fold the cushion and put it into a storage bag. It is very portable and is an ideal companion for long-distance flights, travel, office work, driving, camping and other scenarios
- Practical Three-layer Structure Design: The smooth surface of the fabric is skin friendly and breathable. The high elasticity and durable TPU layer in the middle can withstand a weight of up to 440 pounds. Paired with a reliable non-slip bottom, it firmly grips chair surfaces and can remain stable even when it bumps or moves suddenly
Free entertainment is not the same as free internet
| What you use | What it may cost or require | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Airline entertainment portal | Often free on equipped aircraft | Airline-provided movies, shows, audio or games; no general web access is implied. |
| General internet | May be paid, membership-based or complimentary | Web browsing and messaging; performance depends on aircraft and route. |
| Outside streaming services | Requires a streaming-capable Wi-Fi tier and your own subscription | Netflix, YouTube and similar services can be blocked, congested or unavailable. |
American advertises Wi-Fi on many routes from “as little as $10” and free high-speed access for AAdvantage members on most domestic and selected international flights; eligibility and availability vary. Delta advertises fast, free Wi-Fi for SkyMiles members on most domestic U.S. flights, subject to aircraft and route limits. Alaska explicitly identifies options that do not support streaming. Always read the offer shown for your flight.
Headphones and Bluetooth: choose a fallback
- Wired headphones: The most broadly compatible choice for seatback jacks and personal devices.
- Bluetooth headphones: Convenient for a phone or tablet and for compatible newer seatback systems, but not a universal feature.
- Bluetooth transmitter: Can send seatback audio to wireless headphones through a traditional audio jack, but adds pairing, battery and connector issues.
- Airline earbuds: May be supplied on some flights or cabins; never rely on them being available.
- Noise cancellation: Reduces cabin noise but cannot fix a failed screen, blocked portal or unavailable catalog.
Pair wireless equipment at home and carry a wired alternative. Delta’s connected features differ by aircraft; Alaska advises using headphones for audio and video.

Troubleshoot the portal in this order
- No network visible: Confirm airplane mode is on and Wi-Fi is enabled. The aircraft may be unequipped, the system may not be active yet, or it may be temporarily offline. Check the seat card and ask the crew.
- Network visible, portal absent: Forget and reconnect to the network. Open a plain browser window, enter the airline’s portal address manually, and temporarily disable cellular data.
- Still no portal: Temporarily disable a VPN, private DNS or aggressive ad blocker. Close and reopen the browser, try another browser or device, then restart Wi-Fi or the device.
- Portal opens but video will not play: Select the airline’s free-entertainment area, install or reopen the required app, confirm that the Wi-Fi tier supports streaming, and wait for the airline’s activation point.
- Playback stops: Congestion, satellite coverage, weather, aircraft position or system limits may be responsible. Alaska notes that heavy rain, banking and snow or ice can slow performance. Use downloads if interruptions continue.
- Seatback screen fails: Tell the crew; resetting a seat system may require crew or maintenance action.
Accessibility, families and safety
Look for closed captions, subtitles, audio description, adjustable text or contrast and screen-reader support where offered. Hearing-aid and Bluetooth-audio compatibility depends on the hardware and content. Request disability-related assistance before travel when appropriate, and ask the crew for help with controls or device holders; American describes assistance options in its FAQ. Not every title has captions or audio description.
Follow crew instructions over any general guide. Keep devices in airplane mode unless onboard connectivity is permitted, stow large devices during taxi, takeoff, landing and whenever instructed, and keep screens and accessories clear of exits, aisles, tray-table movement and safety equipment. American specifically distinguishes small devices that may be held or placed under the seat from larger items such as laptops and virtual-reality headsets, which must be put away; see its connection guidance. Keep headphone volume low enough to hear announcements, and do not make cellular voice calls where prohibited.
The dependable backup plan
- Download at least one long film or several episodes before leaving home.
- Save music, podcasts, an audiobook, reading material and offline games.
- Charge every device and headphone case.
- Pack wired headphones even if the booking promises free Wi-Fi or a screen.
- Keep one non-screen activity available.
- Use only the network name and portal published by the airline; avoid entering sensitive information into an unfamiliar network.
Seatback systems are easiest when you want a larger screen and no battery drain. Personal-device portals are better for your own controls, downloads and accessibility settings. Downloaded media is the only option that does not depend on the assigned aircraft, portal activation, streaming tier or onboard connectivity.
