It is not a standard Pixel 10 feature: Google documents it for the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL, with Google product materials also listing the Pro Fold. Camera Coach is a separate, internet-dependent assistant that analyzes a scene and suggests composition, lighting, framing, zoom and shooting-mode changes before you take the picture.
Camera Coach and Pro Zoom do different jobs
Camera Coach uses Gemini-based cloud suggestions to guide composition and camera choices. It scans a preview, lets you select a subject or point of focus, and presents step-by-step advice. It does not automatically take the final photograph.
Pro Zoom (Pro Res Zoom) is computational long-distance photography. After its model is installed, compatible phones can reach up to 100x. Above 30x, the phone saves both a generative-AI-enhanced image and a non-generative result, so 100x is a reach option—not a promise of optical or forensic detail.
Google describes Camera Coach in its launch guide at Google’s Camera Coach guide. Current Pro Zoom instructions are in Google Camera Help.

Turn on Camera Coach
- Open the Camera app.
- Tap Settings in the bottom-left corner.
- Tap More settings.
- Turn on Camera Coach.
- Read the information screen and tap Turn on.
You can also start it from the viewfinder by tapping the camera-and-star Camera Coach icon near the upper-right area. Camera Coach requires Wi-Fi or cellular data for its cloud-based suggestions.

Use Camera Coach for a shot
- With the rear camera in a supported mode, tap the Camera Coach icon and point at the scene.
- Wait for the preview scan, then select the suggested subject or tap the point you want the advice to prioritize.
- Choose Inspiration for alternate ideas, or rescan if the first analysis is unhelpful.
- Follow the displayed instructions. Depending on the scene, Camera Coach may suggest a different angle, framing, lighting position, zoom level or camera mode.
- Tap the arrow near the shutter button to move through the tips.
- Capture the photo when the framing suits you. You can dismiss or ignore any recommendation.
Google documents Camera Coach for the rear camera in default Camera, Portrait and Night Sight modes. It may not provide help when the viewfinder is too dark, blocked or contains sensitive imagery. Treat its suggestions as coaching rather than a guarantee of a better photograph.
Download Pro Zoom (formerly Pro Res Zoom)
The label depends on your Camera app version. Current Google Camera Help says Pro Zoom; older tutorials and the Pixel Simulator say Pro Res Zoom. Look for either name.
- Open Camera.
- Tap Settings at the bottom left.
- Tap More.
- Tap Model download.
- Under Not installed, tap Pro Zoom (or Pro Res Zoom).
- Download the model. You may enable automatic updates over Wi-Fi.
Google does not state a reliable universal download size; the amount shown on your phone is the authoritative figure.

Take a long-distance photo, step by step
- Switch to Photo mode and frame the distant subject.
- Start at 5x, 10x, 20x or 30x. Increase magnification only until the subject fills the frame adequately.
- At 15x and higher, use Stabilize when the control is available.
- Brace the phone against a solid surface or hold it with both hands. Bright light gives the camera more usable information.
- Press the shutter while keeping the phone still, and take several frames.
- Above 30x, open the results in Google Photos and compare the generative-AI and non-generative files before choosing one.
Pro Zoom is optimized for Tensor G5 and uses a diffusion model in Pixel Camera, but computational enhancement cannot recover sensor detail that was never captured. Atmospheric haze, focus errors and tiny hand movements become increasingly obvious at 50x–100x.
Choose the lowest useful zoom
| Situation | Starting range | Practical reason |
|---|---|---|
| Nearby person or portrait | 1x–5x | More natural perspective and less reconstructed detail |
| Landmark or landscape | 5x–20x | Usually enough reach with more dependable texture |
| Wildlife in daylight | 5x–30x, then higher if needed | Distance may require reach, but light and stability remain critical |
| School performance from several rows back | 5x–30x | Use the minimum zoom that frames the performer |
| Stationary, very distant object | 30x–100x | Compare both files and verify fine details |
| Low-light distant subject | Reduce zoom if possible | Extreme magnification amplifies blur and noise |
| Small text or document | Avoid relying on 100x | Generative enhancement can form plausible but incorrect characters |
Examples that benefit from careful technique
Wildlife and pets
Use daylight, brace the phone and shoot bursts or several separate frames. Animals that move their heads or fur between frames can produce inconsistent reconstructed detail, so keep the least artificial-looking result.

Camera Coach can help level the composition or choose a stronger viewpoint first. Then use 5x–20x for architectural details; reserve higher settings for genuinely distant, stationary elements.

School performances
Begin around 5x or 10x and increase only as needed. A performer moving across a dim stage is a poor candidate for 100x; a lower zoom with a sharper frame is generally more useful.
Signs and distant text
Move closer or use a lower zoom whenever possible. Inspect every character at full resolution, and do not treat a generative result as a literal transcription.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a 100x image can look wrong
- Motion blur: subject movement and tiny hand motions are magnified.
- Low light: noise and missed focus become more visible.
- Haze and backlight: the atmosphere between phone and subject reduces real contrast.
- Generative reconstruction: hair, foliage, repeating patterns, faces and lettering may look coherent while differing from the scene.
- Overconfidence in the number: 100x describes magnification, not guaranteed resolving power.
For documentation, evidence or any situation where exact identity and wording matter, prefer the non-generative file, a lower zoom, or a closer viewpoint. The generative version is better treated as a creative or casual-sharing option when its reconstructed details are not misleading.

Privacy, connectivity and accuracy
Camera Coach’s cloud-based Gemini suggestions require a data connection or Wi-Fi. The feature can be unavailable when offline, and Google documents limits for dark, obstructed or sensitive scenes. Because it offers recommendations rather than deterministic camera settings, you remain responsible for deciding whether its advice fits the moment.
Pro Zoom’s two outputs are not equivalent records: one includes generative enhancement and one does not. Keep both when detail or provenance matters, and disclose the use of generative enhancement if the image could be interpreted as documentary evidence.
Troubleshooting
The Camera Coach icon is gray or missing
- Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Check that Guided Frame is off; Google lists it as a reason the icon can be gray.
- Use the rear camera and default Camera, Portrait or Night Sight mode.
- Point at a scene that is visible rather than too dark or blocked.
- Try again if the scene may contain sensitive imagery that Camera Coach cannot analyze.
See Google’s support steps at Camera Coach help.
Pro Zoom does not appear
- Confirm that your model is a Pixel 10 Pro, Pro XL or a Pro Fold with the feature listed for its current software.
- Install available Camera updates.
- Open Settings → More → Model download and check Not installed.
- Search for both labels: Pro Zoom and Pro Res Zoom.
The result is blurry
Add light, lower the zoom, brace the phone, use Stabilize at 15x or higher when offered, hold still before and after the shutter press, and capture multiple frames.
The result looks artificial
Compare the non-generative file, inspect faces and text closely, and choose a lower zoom or a closer position when literal accuracy matters.
Which Pixel 10 should you choose?
Choose the regular Pixel 10 for general Pixel photography, but verify its Camera app before expecting 100x. Choose the Pixel 10 Pro or Pixel 10 Pro XL if Pro Zoom and Pro camera controls are the reason you are buying; the XL suits readers who prefer a larger phone. Consider the Pixel 10 Pro Fold only when foldable design is equally important, and confirm current US availability and Pro Zoom support on the live listing. Prices and stock change, so check Google Store pages before purchase.
