Yes—Free Download Manager (FDM) can upload torrent data automatically. While a torrent is downloading, it may upload pieces you already have. After the download reaches 100%, it may continue uploading as a seed if the torrent task remains active. To stop normal torrent sharing, pause or stop that task, or quit FDM. You can usually keep the downloaded files; do not select an option that deletes them unless that is what you want.
Why FDM uploads torrent data
FDM is not only an HTTP/HTTPS download manager. Its current site describes a built-in BitTorrent client with torrent and magnet-link support (FDM homepage; FDM features).

A browser-style download normally receives data from a web server. BitTorrent is different: the client exchanges verified pieces with other peers in the same swarm. FDM can therefore download missing pieces and upload pieces it has already received.

Uploading before 100%
Upload traffic while a torrent is still downloading is normal. It does not mean the entire file has been sent. The amount depends on peer requests, the swarm, tracker or DHT activity, network conditions, and your settings.

Seeding after completion
When all pieces are present, the torrent can remain available as a seed. Seeding means sharing pieces with other peers after downloading; a ratio of 1.0 represents approximately as much data uploaded as downloaded, according to BitTorrent’s explanation of seeding. A completed torrent may show zero upload at a particular moment simply because no peer currently wants its data.
FDM’s public documentation confirms BitTorrent and seeding functionality, but it does not establish one universal seeding duration or default across every current operating-system build. Treat a completed, active torrent as potentially able to upload until you pause or stop it.
What the upload numbers mean
| Indicator | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Upload speed | Data currently being sent, such as 50 KB/s. |
| Uploaded amount | Total data sent by that torrent so far. |
| Share ratio | Uploaded amount divided by downloaded amount. |
| Seeding | The torrent is complete and remains available to peers. |
Interface labels vary among FDM releases and between Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. The official download page currently lists FDM 6.34.3 builds for several platforms, but it does not provide one complete, platform-independent torrent-control guide (FDM downloads).

How to check whether FDM is uploading
- Open FDM’s download or torrent list.
- Select the relevant torrent or magnet task.
- Read its state, such as Downloading, Seeding, Paused, Stopped, or Completed.
- Check that task’s current upload speed, uploaded total, and ratio if those fields are displayed.
- Compare the task with FDM’s global upload indicator. Another torrent or ordinary upload task may be responsible for the total.
“100%” means the local content is complete; it does not necessarily mean the task has stopped.
How to stop an upload without deleting the files
- Select the torrent in FDM.
- Click Pause or Stop.
- Wait until the task is no longer active and its upload speed reaches zero.
- If traffic continues, exit FDM completely.
- For an individual control, use a context-menu option such as Disable seeding, Stop seeding, or Disable upload if your version provides one.
Stop, remove, and delete are different
- Pause or stop: normally preserves the task and downloaded data for later resumption.
- Remove task: removes FDM’s torrent job. Read the confirmation dialog to determine whether data will remain.
- Delete files: erases the downloaded content from storage.
Removing a .torrent file alone is not a reliable stop command. FDM may retain the task internally, and magnet downloads may not have a conventional torrent file.
Ways to reduce future upload activity
Stop completed tasks
Pause or stop completed torrents when you want to retain the files but no longer participate in the swarm. This is the clearest and least destructive option.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Disable seeding per torrent
Some FDM versions expose a torrent-specific seeding control. Historical FDM release information documents such a feature (FDM release note), but that older page does not prove the current 6.x label or menu location. Use the equivalent control shown by your build.

Limit upload speed
An upload limit can protect a congested or metered connection, but it is not the same as disconnecting the torrent. BitTorrent’s connection guidance explains that limits affect overall performance: too much upstream traffic can cause congestion, while too little can impair torrent performance (connection guide). A limit of zero also does not guarantee that tracker, DHT, or peer-discovery communication has stopped.
Close FDM or remove the task
Quitting FDM generally ends its active torrent connections. Removing the torrent task prevents that task from being resumed or seeded by FDM, provided you do not choose to delete its data.

Is FDM uploading unrelated private files?
Normally, no. The payload upload is associated with active torrent tasks and the content those tasks describe—not every file stored on your computer and not an automatic upload to an FDM cloud server. Check the per-torrent list rather than relying only on a global meter.
Any torrent content left active can be shared with peers. BitTorrent itself is a distribution protocol; open-source and public-domain torrents can be lawful, while unauthorized sharing of copyrighted material may create legal risk. Private trackers can also impose minimum-seeding or ratio rules, so stopping immediately may conflict with their terms.

Peers in a torrent swarm can generally observe the network address used for the connection. A VPN may change the apparent route, but it does not make infringement lawful, guarantee that all torrent traffic uses the tunnel, or prevent leaks after a connection failure. It can also affect speed and introduces the provider’s own logging, jurisdiction, and acceptable-use policies. If your goal is simply to stop FDM uploads, pausing or stopping the torrent is more direct than buying a VPN.

Troubleshooting continued upload traffic
The torrent is paused, but the global meter still moves
- Inspect every FDM task; another torrent may be active.
- Check for other FDM upload or download jobs.
- Allow a short period for peer connections and the interface to refresh.
- Quit FDM and recheck the operating system’s network monitor or router.
- If traffic persists, investigate cloud sync, backup software, browser uploads, another torrent client, or malware.
The task was removed, but traffic continues
Close FDM completely and check other applications. Removing one task does not prove that another task or program is not using the network.
I want the files but not the sharing
Pause or stop the torrent, or remove its task while preserving data when the confirmation dialog offers that choice. Do not tick a delete-files option unless you intend to erase the content.
Current-version caveat
FDM’s official download page lists version 6.34.3 as of the information dated August 16, 2026 (official downloads). Older FDM material records both seeding controls and a historical limitation on disabling seeding by default (release note; older blog comment). Those pages should not be treated as proof that every current platform uses the same setting or default. When labels differ, use the task’s pause, stop, or equivalent seeding control.
The Bottom Line
FDM can automatically upload pieces of an active torrent, both during downloading and after 100% completion. Pause or stop the torrent—or close FDM—to stop normal sharing, and distinguish removing the task from deleting the downloaded files.
