As reported by GamesRadar+, Radford described the studio as a flagship whose high-profile games can help make PlayStation hardware more appealing.
What did the former Naughty Dog developer say?
In an interview with Kiwi Talkz, as quoted by GamesRadar+, Matt Radford said: “My understanding is really that Naughty Dog exists to sell Sony hardware.” GamesRadar+ identifies Radford as a former VFX artist on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4. He also characterized the studio as a “flagship to sell the hardware.”

The qualification matters: “my understanding” presents this as Radford’s view of the business, not a declaration of company policy. GamesRadar+ reported the interview; the original interview was not independently verified here.

Why would a game studio help sell consoles?
Radford’s explanation is that a prominent first-party studio can create games that give people an additional reason to choose Sony hardware. In that account, the value of a Naughty Dog release is not limited to the copies sold: its role as a high-profile PlayStation game could also contribute to the appeal of the platform.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
GamesRadar+ points to The Last of Us Part II and Uncharted 4 as examples of Naughty Dog’s work. The report does not provide evidence measuring whether either game drove console purchases, or how much such an effect might be worth to Sony.
Does that mean Naughty Dog does not need to make money?
No. The claim does not establish that Naughty Dog operates without commercial goals or that Sony treats game sales as unimportant. It offers one possible explanation for why Sony might value a studio’s work beyond direct game revenue: a flagship title could also support the attractiveness of its hardware.

GamesRadar+ frames Radford’s point against companies that are more focused on recurring revenue. That comparison is context for his argument, not a demonstrated account of the relative business models or profitability of specific publishers.

What the report does—and does not—establish
- Attributed viewpoint: Radford said he understood Naughty Dog’s role as helping sell Sony hardware.
- Possible rationale: The studio’s high-profile games may function as platform showcases, in Radford’s view.
- Not established: The report provides no Sony statement confirming this purpose and no sales data showing that Naughty Dog games cause hardware purchases.
- No verified budget figure: Radford’s reported reference to “$600 million or some astronomical figure” was speculative discussion of how costly future games might become, not a confirmed Naughty Dog budget or sourced industry statistic.
