Misophonia is an unusually intense response to particular sounds or related stimuli—not simply a dislike of loud noise. A sound such as chewing may trigger anger, distress, or a physical reaction in one person and barely register for someone else. The triggers and their impact vary, and the science and clinical guidance are still developing.
What is misophonia?
A 2022 multidisciplinary expert committee defined misophonia as “a disorder of decreased tolerance to specific sounds or stimuli associated with such sounds.” The committee said these triggers feel unpleasant or distressing and tend to evoke strong emotional, physiological, and behavioral responses that most people do not experience in response to the same stimulus. The definition came from a Delphi study in which 15 experts considered statements over four voting rounds; a statement was included only after at least 80% agreement. Read the consensus study.

The definition is a working foundation, not proof that the causes or boundaries of misophonia are settled. It describes a recognizable experience while leaving important questions about diagnosis and treatment open.

For misophonia, the sound’s particular pattern or personal meaning may matter more than how loud it is. Chewing is a familiar example, as are sniffing and other repetitive bodily sounds. Triggers differ between people; there is no fixed list that can confirm misophonia. The response may be difficult to redirect once the trigger is noticed, and it can include emotional, bodily, and behavioral reactions.

Some people also report visual or movement-related triggers. The consensus definition focuses on sounds and stimuli associated with sounds, so those reports should not be treated as universal diagnostic criteria. The Misophonia Association’s overview describes auditory, visual, and movement-related experiences.
How is misophonia different from sensitivity to loud noise?
Misophonia is generally discussed in relation to specific sounds or sound-associated stimuli and the intense reactions they evoke. Hyperacusis and broader noise sensitivity involve different sound-tolerance concerns, but terminology and boundaries are not consistent across the literature, and experiences can overlap. The contrast below is explanatory, not a diagnostic test.

| Question | Misophonia | Hyperacusis or broader noise sensitivity |
|---|---|---|
| What tends to matter? | A particular sound pattern or its meaning to the individual; loudness alone does not appear to explain the reaction. | May involve sound intensity or a broader noisy environment; terms and definitions vary. |
| What is the response like? | Strong emotional, physiological, or behavioral reactions are characteristic of the consensus definition. | Discomfort or overwhelm may be described, but the literature does not use fully consistent terms. |
| How specific are triggers? | Triggers are often repetitive and may be narrowly specific, though not always. | May concern noise more broadly rather than a particular repetitive sound. |
| When does it warrant attention? | When distress or difficulty ignoring triggers affects social, academic, or work life. | Assessment depends on the person’s symptoms and circumstances. |
The 2022 review in the American Journal of Audiology emphasizes the need for clinicians and patients to align on terminology during assessment. It distinguishes misophonia’s intense emotional response to certain sounds from sensitivity to noise as a broader environment, while also noting inconsistencies in the literature. See the review’s abstract and publication details. A checklist or comparison table cannot diagnose the cause of an individual’s sound distress.

The consensus committee did not find biological, genetic, or behavioral mechanisms sufficiently established to include them in its definition. It also did not give a prevalence figure: published estimates use different definitions and measurement tools, and most measures had not been psychometrically validated. Age of onset and the typical course over a lifetime also remain under investigation.

Clinical tools and treatment evidence are developing. The Misophonia Research Fund describes a lack of standardized measures and scientifically vetted therapeutic strategies. Its overview of misophonia and research does not establish a universally validated treatment. The Misophonia Association describes coping strategies and professional support, but that educational material is not comparative trial evidence for a particular intervention.

If the distress is interfering with relationships, school, work, or other daily activities, consider discussing your experience with an appropriately qualified audiologist or mental-health professional. Describe what sounds or associated stimuli trigger a response, what the response feels like, and how it affects you. An assessment can help clarify the concern and whether other auditory or psychological factors should be considered; the consensus authors specifically caution that symptoms should not be better explained by another auditory, psychological, or psychiatric disorder.

Peer groups and educational resources may offer information and a chance to connect with people who report similar experiences. The Misophonia Association lists peer support, education, virtual clinics, and contact with therapists or audiologists as possible resources. Availability and services can change, so check details with the organization directly. These are support pathways, not guarantees of treatment or improvement.
The evidence summarized here does not establish a sound-blocking device or other physical product as a broadly applicable treatment. Nor does it support trying medication, exposure exercises, or deliberate trigger exposure as self-treatment. If considering any intervention, discuss it with a qualified professional who understands your situation.
