A native crypto token is the asset built into a particular blockchain’s protocol and recognized by that network as its own. ETH is native to Ethereum; SOL is native to Solana. The term is relative to a network: an asset can be native on one blockchain and a tokenized representation on another.
What “native” means in crypto
“Native” describes an asset’s relationship to a specific blockchain, not a universal property of the asset. Ethereum’s documentation calls Ether (ETH) its native cryptocurrency, and Solana’s documentation calls SOL its native currency. In each case, the asset is part of the network’s underlying protocol rather than a token created by a separate application contract on that network.

People often say “coin” for a network’s native asset and “token” for assets issued on top of a network. Usage is not consistent across every crypto community, however. To avoid ambiguity, it is more useful to ask whether an asset is native to a named blockchain or issued on it.
How a native asset differs from a token issued on a blockchain
The key difference is where the asset is defined and how the network tracks it. On Ethereum, ETH is the native asset. An ERC-20 token, by contrast, is implemented by a deployed smart contract. That contract tracks balances and provides standardized operations such as transfers and approvals. Ethereum’s standards help tokens work with compatible wallets, exchanges, and decentralized applications.

Solana uses a different model for tokens issued on its network. SPL tokens are managed through Token Programs: a mint account represents a token and stores details such as its supply and decimal precision, while token accounts track owners’ holdings. SOL remains Solana’s native currency; an SPL token is not native merely because it exists on Solana.
| Question | Native asset | Token issued on the network |
|---|---|---|
| Where is it defined? | In the blockchain’s protocol. | Through a smart contract on Ethereum, or a Token Program and related accounts on Solana. |
| How is it represented? | As the network’s own asset. | By the contract or token-account and mint mechanisms the network uses. |
| What might it do? | Its functions depend on the network. ETH, for example, pays Ethereum transaction fees and is required for staking and proposing blocks. | Its purpose depends on the issuing project or application; it could be a stablecoin, governance asset, or another project token. |
These examples explain Ethereum and Solana, not every blockchain. A network’s documentation is the right place to check how its native asset works and whether it supports fees, staking, or other protocol functions.

Are ETH and SOL native tokens?
Yes, when the network is specified: ETH is Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency, and SOL is Solana’s native currency. In everyday discussion, “native coin” is also commonly used for an asset like these. The important distinction is not the label “coin” versus “token,” but whether the asset belongs to the blockchain’s protocol or is issued through a separate token mechanism.
Are wrapped tokens native assets?
No—not to the network on which they are issued. A wrapped token is a representation of an asset associated with another network. Solana’s educational guide gives wrapped Bitcoin and wrapped Ethereum as examples of assets represented on Solana. They are tokens on Solana, not Solana’s native SOL.

Do not assume that a wrapped token is automatically backed, redeemable, or risk-free. Those details depend on the particular bridge or protocol that creates and manages it.
WETH illustrates the distinction on Ethereum. It is a wrapped ERC-20 form used where applications need ERC-20 compatibility; it has its own token address and is distinct from native ETH. ERC-7528 specifies a separate convention for identifying native ETH rather than treating WETH as native ETH.

Why the distinction matters
- Fees and protocol functions: A network may require its native asset for transaction fees or other protocol activity. ETH has these documented roles on Ethereum; do not assume every network uses its native asset in the same way.
- Wallet and application compatibility: Token standards such as ERC-20 give compatible software a common way to interact with tokens. A wrapped or contract-issued asset may be needed when an application expects a particular token interface.
- Network identity: The same underlying asset can have a different status depending on where it appears. Check the network and the asset’s specific contract or token details rather than relying on its name alone.
- Representation and risk: A wrapped asset represents something associated with another network. Its mechanics and risks depend on the specific issuing bridge or protocol.
A quick way to classify an asset
- Name the blockchain. “Native” only makes sense in relation to a particular network.
- Check the network’s documentation. Look for the asset it identifies as its native currency or protocol asset.
- Check how the asset is issued. On Ethereum, an ERC-20 is a smart-contract token; on Solana, SPL tokens use Token Programs and mint and token accounts.
- Check whether it is wrapped. If it represents an asset associated with another network, identify it as a wrapped token on the current network, not that network’s native asset.
For example, ETH on Ethereum is native ETH; WETH is an ERC-20 token with its own address. SOL is native to Solana; a wrapped representation of ETH or Bitcoin on Solana is a token on Solana.
