It is paid promotion designed to fit the form, style, or experience of the content around it. A sponsored post in a social feed, a paid search result, or an article-like sponsored story can all be native ads. The key question is whether people can readily recognize the commercial message and who is behind it.
How native advertising works
Native advertising adapts an ad to its setting: it may look like a post, listing, recommendation, video, or other content unit that belongs in the surrounding experience. “Native” describes the format or delivery approach; it does not guarantee editorial quality, audience trust, or campaign effectiveness.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says native ads may resemble surrounding news, feature articles, reviews, entertainment, or other material. That resemblance can make a placement feel less disruptive, but it can also obscure that it is advertising. The FTC’s guiding concern is the overall impression: consumers should not be misled into thinking a paid message is independent or comes from someone other than its actual sponsor. Common native ad formats
The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) identified six core interactive formats in a 2013 framework. It remains a useful way to describe the forms native ads can take, not a current census of every platform’s products.
| Format | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| In-feed unit | A paid post or content item placed within a feed, such as a social or publisher feed. |
| Paid search unit | A sponsored result formatted alongside ordinary search results. |
| Recommendation widget | A sponsored recommendation card appearing among links to other content. |
| Promoted listing | A paid product or service listing presented alongside ordinary listings. |
| Standard ad with native elements | A conventional ad that incorporates design or content elements matching its environment. |
| Custom unit | A format tailored to a particular publisher or platform experience. |
Native advertising can also appear as sponsored video, email, infographics, images, animations, or in-game content. The FTC discusses these formats in its business guide; the form alone does not determine whether disclosure is needed.
The IAB’s original framework and its evaluation questions were published in 2013. See the IAB’s Native Advertising Playbook announcement.

How native advertising differs from display advertising
Display advertising is commonly presented as a distinct ad unit, such as a banner, separate from the page’s editorial or functional content. Native advertising is designed to match the form or behavior of surrounding material more closely. The distinction is about presentation and integration, not whether an item is paid: both can be advertising, and either may require clear identification in context.

Some ads combine approaches, such as a standard ad with native design elements. Regardless of format, an ad should not create a misleading impression about its commercial nature or source.
How to disclose sponsored content clearly
In the United States, FTC guidance applies established truth-in-advertising principles to ads that resemble non-advertising content. The FTC’s 2015 policy statement says an ad’s format may be deceptive if it materially misleads consumers about whether the message is commercial or who is responsible for it. The agency’s policy announcement quotes Jessica Rich, then Director of the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection: “People browsing the Web, using social media, or watching videos have a right to know if they’re seeing editorial content or an ad.” Read the FTC policy statement announcement.
For advertisers and publishers, the FTC’s guidance is to make disclosures clear and prominent enough for people to notice, process, and understand them. Practical checks include:

- Use clear, unambiguous language that identifies the content as advertising or sponsored content.
- Place the disclosure close to the ad and its focal point. For an article-like unit, put it near the headline.
- Make the text readable, with sufficient contrast against its background.
- For video or audio, present the disclosure long enough or often enough for viewers or listeners to notice and understand it.
- For a thumbnail-led video, consider putting the disclosure on the visually dominant image. For multimedia, disclose before the relevant advertising message.
- If a card leads to a full advertising page, identify the ad on both the originating page and destination page when needed to avoid misleading people.
- Check that the disclosure works across devices and platforms.
Context matters. A clearly branded product ad that does not resemble surrounding subject matter may not need a special label in a particular situation; an article-style piece that resembles a publisher’s reporting and recommends a sponsor’s product is more likely to need a prominent disclosure. These are context-dependent examples, not blanket exemptions. The FTC guide explains how placement and presentation affect whether a disclosure is effective.
How to evaluate a native advertising option
The IAB’s 2013 framework suggests comparing formats across six dimensions. These are questions to ask, not evidence that one format or platform performs better than another.

- Form: Does the unit fit the page design and appear in the activity stream?
- Function: Does it behave like other content elements and offer a similar experience?
- Integration: Does it lead to an experience consistent with the surrounding content, or introduce a different interaction?
- Buying and targeting: Is placement guaranteed on a particular site or section, or distributed across a network? What targeting is available?
- Measurement: Are results assessed through engagement, such as views, likes, shares, or time spent, or through actions such as sales, downloads, data capture, or registrations?
- Disclosure: How is the paid unit identified so consumers can distinguish it from editorial content?
When comparing offers, ask providers for current inventory, targeting options, reporting definitions, placement controls, and disclosure behavior. Choose metrics that fit the campaign goal: engagement measures may suit awareness objectives, while registrations or sales may be relevant to action-oriented campaigns.
Does native advertising work?
There is no single answer based on format alone. Results depend on the campaign objective, audience, creative, placement, and measurement. The primary sources cited here do not establish current cross-platform cost or conversion comparisons, or a universal sales lift, return on investment, or best-performing native format.

The FTC announced in 2017 that agency-commissioned research conducted in 2014–2015 examined consumer reactions to changes in disclosure wording, position, text size, color, borders, and background shading. The announcement said commonsense disclosure techniques can greatly increase the likelihood that ads are recognized, but it did not provide a universal performance benchmark. See the FTC staff-report announcement.
Scope of the guidance
The disclosure discussion here describes U.S. FTC guidance and policy. It should not be treated as a summary of rules in other jurisdictions. Platform products and applicable rules can change, so advertisers and publishers should consult current official guidance and the relevant platform documentation when planning a campaign.
