The losses in Asia were broad among chip and AI-linked names. Reuters reported Samsung down 8%, SK Hynix down 10%, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) down 1.8%, and Kioxia down 14%. SoftBank, an investor in AI companies, fell 8% in the same account.
Investors reassessed the AI trade
The concern extended beyond a single chipmaker. Investors were weighing how much further demand for AI hardware and services could grow—and whether exceptional profits and margins would last as competition increased. Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo, told Reuters that CXMT news appeared to trigger the memory-stock slide, while the broader issue was that investors were becoming less forgiving of the AI trade. She said investors were questioning both the potential growth in AI demand and the durability of unusually strong profits and margins.

This is evidence of heightened scrutiny, not evidence that the long-term AI investment theme has ended. AI-related businesses do not move as one group: an earlier March 2026 analysis by Nasdaq Global Indexes described uneven technology performance, with pressure on some application-software companies and comparatively resilient semiconductor and infrastructure-oriented companies. That analysis is general context and does not establish how those groups performed on October 13.

Reports published on October 13 gave different readings of South Korea’s Kospi, reflecting separate observations. Reuters said the index fell more than 6%. The Associated Press reported it down 5.5% at 6,035.35 after it had fallen more than 7% intraday, briefly dropping below 6,000. AP also put Samsung Electronics down 7.4% and SK Hynix down 10.1%. These figures should remain attributed to their respective reports rather than blended into a single quote.

What was happening in U.S. markets?
The futures report came after a mixed U.S. session on October 12. The Associated Press said the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4%, while roughly 64% of S&P 500 companies rose. Several large technology stocks—including Micron, AMD, Broadcom, and Nvidia—declined, but that one-day mix does not mean every AI-exposed company was moving in the same direction.
There was also recent weakness in a different index on a different date: Nasdaq Dorsey Wright said the Nasdaq-100 fell 1.39% on October 9 amid concerns about OpenAI revenue expectations and memory stocks. That reading is additional context, not the October 13 futures figure or the October 12 Nasdaq Composite result.

- Keep the instrument straight. Nasdaq futures are not the Nasdaq Composite or Nasdaq-100 cash index. A futures decline before the open does not determine where either index will finish.
- Keep the clock and source attached. The 0.77% futures decline is Reuters’ 07:22 UTC observation on October 13, not a continuing or closing quote. Index and stock percentages may refer to different observation times.
- Separate the trigger from the bigger concern. Reports about CXMT’s progress were described as a catalyst for memory shares; broader doubts about AI demand and profit durability were the surrounding investor concern.
- Do not treat “AI stocks” as a single trade. Chipmakers, infrastructure providers, software firms, and AI investors have different exposures and can react differently to the same news.
