A fabric described as recycled or designed for recycling does not, by itself, prove that a finished garment can be collected and recycled where you live.
What circular sportswear design means
Circular design considers a product’s full life: how materials are sourced and made, how the garment performs and is cared for, whether it can be repaired or reused, and what happens when it is no longer wearable. Nike’s Circular Design Guide describes its approach as “Creating products that last longer and are designed with the end in mind.” It identifies material choices, cyclability, waste avoidance, disassembly, refurbishment, versatility, and durability among relevant design principles. These are considerations, not a guarantee that a particular garment has a viable recycling route.

For sportswear, the central design question is a trade-off: a construction that provides the fit, stretch, moisture management, or abrasion protection needed for an activity may involve blends, finishes, coatings, or bonded components that complicate repair or recovery. There is no universally best fiber or construction independent of the garment’s use and available end-of-life infrastructure.
How to assess a garment from use to recovery
Consider the garment as a whole rather than treating a fiber label as a complete circularity claim.

Why fiber composition is only part of recyclability
Nike’s material guidance says separating fiber blends is a challenge for textile recyclers. It uses a jacket made from 100% recycled polyester as an example of a mono-material garment optimized for future recycling. That example illustrates a design strategy; it does not establish that every mono-material garment is accepted by a collection program or can be processed in a particular region.
The same guidance describes a dress made from upcycled pre-consumer deadstock with adjustable sizing, fit-flexible seam allowance, and detachable underarm pads. Those features illustrate other ways to support use and adaptability rather than relying solely on fiber composition. They should not be read as proof of a specific performance result or recovery outcome for other products.

Company programs also show why recycling claims need precise scope. PUMA’s 2025 annual report says its RE:FIBRE program uses chemical and/or mechanical recycling of polyester fabric waste and unsellable polyester products, and that in 2025 it extended to jerseys of major football clubs and federations, covering over 9 million items. PUMA also reports a multi-year collaboration begun in early 2025 with RE&UP to process textile waste, including complex blends, into recycled cotton fibers and polyester chips. These are company-reported program details, not evidence that all blend types can be recycled at scale or that collection is available everywhere.
In its 2025 baseline, PUMA reports that 82.0% of PUMA and Cobra polyester fabric was recycled polyester, while 11.5% of recycled polyester fabric used for apparel was fiber-to-fiber recycled polyester. Those figures have different scopes: the first concerns polyester fabric across PUMA and Cobra; the second concerns the share of recycled polyester fabric used for apparel that was fiber-to-fiber recycled polyester. They do not state that all garments made with recycled polyester are recyclable at end of life.

Repair and care can extend useful life
Keeping a garment in use is a practical part of circularity, but repairability depends on the product and the damage. PUMA says it provides consumer care and repair guidelines intended to extend product life. adidas says most of its apparel can be repaired by consumers or a tailor, while noting that some technical products and sports accessories may not be repairable because of their construction. These are company statements, not a universal repairability rating.
- Check the care and repair guidance. Look for the maker’s instructions and assess whether the defect is a loose seam, a damaged panel, a failed closure, or a problem with a coating or bonded section.
- Match the repair to the fabric and fault. A small, suitable repair may be manageable with basic sewing supplies or a clothing repair kit. Technical stretch fabrics, coatings, bonded seams, and extensive damage can call for a tailor or specialist service.
- Ask about repair before discarding the item. Check whether the brand offers a repair service or whether a local tailor can handle the specific construction. Availability varies by location and garment.
- Follow care instructions after repair. Appropriate washing and drying can help preserve the repaired garment; use the maker’s product-specific guidance rather than assuming all technical fabrics can be treated alike.
adidas’s 2025 annual report says durability, repairability, and recyclability are not legally defined or standardized across apparel and footwear, and that there are no industry-average durability or repairability metrics. A statement that “most” apparel can be repaired therefore should not be converted into a prediction about a particular garment’s lifespan or repair outcome.

What current recycling claims can—and cannot—establish
adidas reports that recycling technology and infrastructure for apparel and footwear remain at an early stage. It says it cannot claim its products are recyclable given the lack of standard definitions and collection, sorting, and recycling infrastructure. This is adidas’s company disclosure, not a comprehensive assessment of every jurisdiction or recycling operator, but it highlights why a product-level claim needs a real route behind it.
The European Commission’s EU Textiles Strategy page reports that 5 million tonnes of clothing are discarded each year in the EU, around 12 kg per person, and that 1% of material in clothing is recycled into new clothing. The page also says collecting 1,000 tonnes of textiles for re-use creates 20 to 35 jobs. These Commission figures describe the EU context; the page does not provide a methodology in the cited statements for extending them to other regions.

The Commission’s 2030 vision is for textile products placed on the EU market to be durable, repairable, recyclable, and to a great extent made of recycled fibers. The strategy page lists actions concerning design requirements, a Digital Product Passport, microplastics, extended producer responsibility, and reuse and repair business models. A strategy objective or planned action should not be mistaken for a currently operative legal duty; check the applicable law and its status before making a compliance decision.
Recovery also depends on responsible processing
Recycling is not automatically impact-free. The OECD’s February 9, 2026 paper on due diligence in garment and footwear recycling says recycling processes carry comparatively higher worker and environmental risks than rental, reuse, and repair. That does not mean all recycling has the same impacts; it means a circularity claim should account for how textiles are collected and processed, not only what fiber appears on a label.
For a buyer, the practical order is to choose a garment suited to its activity, use and care for it so it remains serviceable, repair it when feasible, and investigate reuse or take-back options before disposal. Treat a recycling claim as meaningful only when it identifies a credible collection and processing route for that kind of garment in the place where it will be discarded.
