NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover became the farthest-driving vehicle on another world on October 11, 2026, when its cumulative odometer reached 45.22 kilometers (28.10 miles). It passed the previous Mars record, held by NASA’s Opportunity rover, after a 91.31-meter (299.6-foot) drive. The milestone is an accumulated mission total—not one continuous trip—and the record-holder is a robotic science rover, not a road car.
How Perseverance took the record
NASA announced the milestone on October 12, 2026. Perseverance’s total of 45.22 km (28.10 miles) edged past Opportunity’s previous total of 45.16 km (28.06 miles), according to NASA’s record announcement. Perseverance crossed the mark with a single 91.31-meter drive; that short leg was the final addition to a distance accumulated over many drives on Mars.

The two rovers reached comparable totals on very different timelines. NASA says Perseverance did so in about five and a half years, while Opportunity took almost 15 years. These are approximate elapsed mission times, not a comparison of continuous driving time. NASA’s Perseverance mission page also reports the record and the approximate time comparison.
| Vehicle | Cumulative distance | Time to accumulate it | Record context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perseverance | 45.22 km (28.10 miles), reached October 11, 2026 | About 5½ years | Current farthest-driving vehicle on another world, per NASA |
| Opportunity | 45.16 km (28.06 miles) | Almost 15 years | Previous Mars distance record |
What “most-driven vehicle outside Earth” means
The headline’s “car” is shorthand. Perseverance is a six-wheeled robotic rover designed to explore Mars and conduct science. NASA describes the achievement as a record for a vehicle’s total distance driven on the surface of another world. It is not a record for a conventional car, a single uninterrupted journey, or a vehicle that drove between worlds.

Distance totals are useful, but comparisons across missions need care: the available NASA accounts do not establish one measurement protocol applied to every vehicle in the historical comparison. NASA’s Apollo 17 mission report defines traverse odometer distance as the distance actually driven from a traverse’s starting point to its end point. That definition illustrates why a cumulative odometer total should not be confused with straight-line distance from a lander or with the length of one particular route.
How the record fits the history of off-world driving
Before surpassing Opportunity, Perseverance had already passed the lunar driving totals associated with Apollo 17 astronauts and the Soviet Lunokhod 2 rover, according to NASA’s 2026 announcement. That account gives Apollo 17’s total as 35.7 km (22.2 miles) and Lunokhod 2’s as 39 km (24.2 miles). NASA Goddard’s historical Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle reference, however, reports 35.9 km for Apollo 17. These are differently reported NASA figures; the sources do not establish a definitive reason for the variation, so the values should remain attributed to their respective accounts rather than merged into a falsely precise number.

The Apollo 17 lunar rover was a crewed vehicle, unlike the autonomous Mars rovers. NASA Goddard reports 4 hours 26 minutes of total drive time, a longest traverse of 20.1 km, and a greatest distance of 7.6 km from the Lunar Module. The rover used a directional gyro and odometer, with data sent to a computer tracking overall direction and distance back to the Lunar Module. These mission-specific measures are not identical to a Mars rover’s mission odometer total.

Why the distance matters for science
The record reflects more than endurance. NASA says Perseverance’s stamina and longer drives have brought a broader range of geological terrain within reach, allowing the team to examine outcrops and rocks more quickly. The rover can travel as far as 412 meters (1,351 feet) in one sol, or Martian day, and NASA reports that more than 90% of Perseverance’s total distance has been driven using AutoNav, its autonomous navigation capability.
Autonomous navigation matters because a rover on Mars cannot be driven in real time like a remotely controlled car. The record announcement quotes Steven Lee, project manager of the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, describing drives of this length as routine as rover technology has evolved. The accumulated mileage is therefore also a measure of how mission teams and onboard systems can safely cover terrain while pursuing science objectives.
