NASA’s October 7, 2026 release includes digital handwritten annotations by Artemis II astronauts marking five faint flashes they observed on the dark Moon during the April 6 lunar-flyby eclipse. The marks appear on a crew image—not in private paper journals—and are part of a much larger lunar-science dataset now available to the public and researchers.
What did the Artemis II astronauts write on the Moon image?
The featured image is a visualization of the Moon eclipsing the Sun on April 6, 2026. On it, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen marked the locations of brief flashes on the lunar surface. NASA’s caption identifies Wiseman’s annotations in blue, Glover’s in green and Hansen’s in red.

These are digital annotations written on crew-observation images. NASA’s release does not describe them as pages from astronauts’ personal notebooks or journals.
What did the crew see during the lunar eclipse?
NASA’s Preliminary Lunar Science Report says the astronauts reported five extremely faint flashes—like pinpricks—while about 46,000 miles from the Moon. The science team considered alternative explanations, including cosmic rays and reflections from the spacecraft, before concluding the flashes came from rocky fragments striking the lunar surface.

Direct observations from crew at this distance are unusual and may help scientists estimate how often small impacts occur. The five sightings are useful evidence, not a definitive impact-rate estimate or a complete assessment of risks to future lunar habitats and infrastructure. The preliminary report also discusses observations of lunar colors, the day-night boundary (the terminator), and the eclipse and solar corona.
What is included in NASA’s Artemis II lunar science release?
NASA’s October 7, 2026 announcement describes a collection of more than 800 gigabytes of lunar science data, including more than 11,000 full-resolution images and video, 8.5 hours of audio recordings of the crew’s lunar observations, and crew-annotated images. NASA has also published three companion documents:
Rank #2
- Iron or Sew On
- Preliminary Lunar Science Report: discusses the observations and their scientific interpretation.
- Lunar Science Operations Report: documents the lunar science operations.
- Lunar Science Data User Guide: helps users navigate the released data.
The collection distinguishes several kinds of material: annotated images show crew marks and locations, audio preserves spoken observations, and the reports explain the science and data. NASA’s Artemis II lunar science page lists the reports and related images and audio. It dates the Preliminary Lunar Science Report October 7, 2026, and the operations report and data guide October 6, 2026.

Where can you view the Artemis II notes and data?
- Open NASA’s Artemis II lunar science page for the report listings, related mission images and audio, and context for the findings.
- For the archive collection, visit NASA’s Planetary Data System catalog entry for Artemis 2 Mission Crew Annotation Files Product Collection. The catalog identifies the collection as published in 2026 and containing annotation files.
The release makes a substantial dataset available through NASA’s Planetary Data System, so readers can explore beyond the featured image. NASA notes that accessible versions of the full-length reports are in work; the report page provides its available listings and image descriptions.

Who flew Artemis II?
The crew comprised NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, plus Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. NASA describes Artemis II as the first crewed test flight in the Artemis campaign. Its Artemis II press kit provides mission background; the lunar science page and PDS collection are the relevant sources for the released observations and annotations.
