NASA has selected L3Harris Technologies to design, assemble, and integrate an all-glass Engineering Test Unit telescope for LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. Announced October 8, 2026, the work is a pre-flight engineering milestone: NASA has not said the unit has been delivered, and it is not flight hardware. The telescope is part of NASA’s contribution to the ESA-led gravitational-wave observatory, planned to launch in the mid-2030s.
What is LISA?
LISA is a space observatory led by the European Space Agency, with NASA as a partner. It will use three spacecraft following Earth around the Sun in a triangular formation. The spacecraft will be separated by arms about 1.6 million miles (2.5 million kilometers) long.

The mission is designed to detect low-frequency gravitational waves that ground-based detectors cannot observe, including waves from merging massive black holes and compact-object binaries. ESA formally adopted the mission in January 2024. NASA and ESA currently describe its launch as planned for the mid-2030s; NASA’s earlier adoption coverage gave 2035 as the planned year.

What did NASA announce about the test telescope?
NASA’s October 8, 2026 announcement says L3Harris Technologies will design, assemble, and integrate an all-glass Engineering Test Unit (ETU) telescope for the agency. NASA telescope program lead Ritva Keski-Kuha described its place in the program: “This will be our last pre-flight unit and our first optical telescope delivery to ESA.”

- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
- JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE - 2.75 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 4.13 L x 2.75 W x 2.75 H inches. 1:221 Scale. 62 Pieces
- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
The announcement concerns work on a test unit, not a completed delivery or production of flight telescopes. NASA said an earlier metal structural model was delivered in June 2026. That was a separate development milestone: the structural model was metal, while the newly announced ETU is described as all-glass.
How will LISA detect gravitational waves?
Each spacecraft will carry two free-floating proof masses. Infrared laser beams will travel between spacecraft, allowing LISA to track changes in their separation. A passing gravitational wave subtly changes those distances; measuring those variations across the three-spacecraft formation is how the observatory will detect the waves.

The telescope is central to the laser links. NASA describes LISA’s telescopes as afocal beam expanders with pupil relays. They transmit and receive laser light over the long spacecraft separations while helping reduce the conversion of angular jitter into optical-path-length changes. NASA lists the primary mirror diameter at roughly 30 centimeters (about 1 foot).
Why does the telescope need such a stable optical path?
The telescope pair lies in the interferometric measurement path between the proof masses. Any instability or distortion introduced by the optics could obscure the tiny distance changes that LISA is intended to measure. Optical-path stability is therefore a mission measurement requirement, not simply a matter of producing a clear image.

NASA’s January 2026 report described an earlier prototype made from Zerodur, a glass-ceramic selected for dimensional stability across a wide temperature range, with a gold-coated mirror. That report and the October 2026 announcement describe different development milestones. The earlier material description should not be taken to mean every telescope unit uses the same materials or that a unit is ready for flight.

ESA leads the mission, while NASA provides several hardware and technical contributions. Alongside the telescope work, NASA lists laser systems, charge-management devices, data-analysis systems, and scientific and systems-engineering support. NASA’s January 2026 progress report also describes work on the science data framework and collaborators developing charge-management devices.

- 3D WOODEN MONOCULAR PUZZLES: Excellent 3D puzzles for adults. 1:1 replicates the function of the retro monoculars. Build your own working Monocular model made of sturdy plywood. After finished, you can observe long-distance objects by extending the telescopic lens tube.
- WONDERFUL GIFT&HOME DECOR: It is ideal and creative gift to surprise friends, families, Birthday/ Christmas.A good choice for someone who is DIY lover. It looks great and pretty to show on your table, With a retractable tripod, it can become a decoration in your office or living room.
- STEM EDUCATIONAL TOYS: This ROKR wooden puzzle can also be a brain teaser puzzle. It's a highly educational construction experience that satisfied you. Improve your understanding of STEM principles while having a whale of a good time. And it is fun to put together with your family or friends.
- NO ADDITIONAL TOOLS REQUIRED: Everything you need to assemble the building kit comes in the box. Simply unbox and start! No additional tools or glue is required.
- PORTABLE: Our monoculars are equipped with a portable bucket, which can be carried with you when you go out or camp.
The telescope’s roughly 30-centimeter primary mirror and long-range laser links illustrate why these contributions are specialized: LISA must maintain and measure an exceptionally stable optical connection between spacecraft millions of miles apart.
