Choose direct-attached storage (DAS) when one computer needs extra storage or a simple local backup. Choose network-attached storage (NAS) when several devices or people need shared files or centrally managed backup workflows. Either can hold a backup, but neither RAID nor a single storage device is a complete backup plan: keep another copy, preferably on a separate medium and in an offsite or otherwise separately protected location.
What’s the difference between NAS and DAS?
Direct-attached storage (DAS)
DAS connects directly to a computer, commonly through an external USB drive. By itself, a DAS drive is attached to its host; other computers on the network do not connect directly to it. To make its files available over a network, the connected computer or a NAS must share or host the drive, and that host must be available and configured to do so. WD describes this direct-connection distinction in its support guidance.

Network-attached storage (NAS)
A NAS connects to the network and makes storage available to devices through network services. Depending on the model and configuration, it may offer shared folders, user permissions, backup applications, snapshots, and remote-access options. Protocol support varies; Synology’s DSM guidance, for example, documents services including SMB, NFS, FTP, and WebDAV. Check the selected NAS model and software version for supported features.

| Need | Likely fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Extra space for one desktop or laptop | DAS | Computer ports, drive format, and capacity. A direct connection is usually the simpler arrangement. |
| A copy of one computer’s files | DAS or NAS | Whether you want manual copying or scheduled and versioned backups; check backup software support and restore steps. |
| Shared folders for household devices or a small team | NAS | Client compatibility, network protocols, permissions, network performance, and whether remote access is supported and configured. |
| Backups from several devices in one place | NAS | Support for each client device, backup scheduling, version history, snapshots, and any separate offsite copy you need. |
| A separate recovery copy | Either can be the destination | A USB DAS drive can serve as a backup destination on supported NAS systems. Follow the device instructions and eject safely before unplugging; consider disconnecting or separately locating backup media when appropriate. |
For a one-computer setup, an external USB drive is a straightforward DAS option. For shared storage and centralized workflows, a NAS enclosure is the relevant category; check drive bays, supported drives, backup-client support, network ports, software support lifetime, security updates, and remote-access design before choosing a model. If the enclosure takes separately installed drives, confirm compatibility against its supported-drive list.

Can other computers access a DAS drive?
Not directly just because the drive is plugged into one computer. Network access requires that the connected computer or another suitable host share the drive. That host needs to be on and correctly configured while other devices need access. A NAS is designed to provide storage over the network without relying on a user’s desktop or laptop as the sharing host.
Is NAS RAID a backup?
No. RAID can provide redundancy or help maintain availability after some disk failures, depending on its implementation, but it does not protect against every cause of data loss. A NAS can fail, lose disks, or be misconfigured, so it should not be the only copy of important files. Synology’s backup guidance recommends the 3-2-1 approach: 3 copies, 2 storage mediums, and 1 offsite copy. It also warns that RAID crashes and hard-drive failures may still cause data loss. Read Synology’s data-protection guidance.

How should you compare speed, capacity, cost, and upkeep?
- Access: One host generally favors DAS. Shared access by multiple devices or people favors NAS.
- Backup workflow: Compare manual copying with scheduled automation, version history, client compatibility, and the steps needed to restore files.
- Capacity and expansion: Compare usable capacity, drive bays, supported drive sizes, and expansion options for specific products.
- Speed: Consider the drive, enclosure, host interface, Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection, and workload. Neither category is universally faster; the result depends on the hardware and setup.
- Total cost and maintenance: Account for the enclosure, drives, network upgrades if needed, power, separate backup media, software, and the time required to manage the setup. There is no established like-for-like price comparison here.
Using a USB drive as a NAS backup target
Some NAS systems support a directly connected USB drive as a backup destination. This can create a separate copy, but the steps and compatibility are device-specific. Seagate’s NAS manual documents this workflow for its system and warns users to eject the drive before disconnecting it to avoid filesystem damage. Follow the instructions for your own NAS rather than assuming every model behaves the same way. See Seagate’s NAS manual.
