CLIP Search vs. macOS Photos Search: Which Finds Media Better?

Neither is proven to find media better overall. Apple Photos documents search for people, places, dates, events, objects and scenes; contextual CLIP search can accept freeform descriptions that do not need to match words in a file’s metadata. Those are different strengths, not the results of a head-to-head accuracy test. Choose based on the searches you make, or compare both on the same library before deciding.

What “CLIP Search” means here

CLIP is an approach to matching text with visual content, not one specific Mac app. Its features, supported media, privacy practices and setup depend on the product implementing it. ShotSelect is one macOS example; Immich documents contextual CLIP search as another implementation. Their capabilities should not be assumed to be identical.

How the search approaches differ

macOS Photos: search by familiar library categories

Apple says Photos uses on-device machine learning to analyze pictures so users can search for people, places, dates, events, objects and scenes. Apple’s examples include “basketball,” “birthday cake” and “beach.” Apple also says face recognition, scene detection and object detection happen on-device. These are Apple’s descriptions of its product, not independent measurements of search accuracy. Apple Photos listing

Contextual CLIP: describe the visual content

Immich’s documentation says contextual CLIP search supports freeform queries that do not have to repeat words present in image or video metadata. That can be useful when you remember a visual detail but not a filename, date or tagged category. Immich advises users searching only in English to look in its CLIP section; that guidance does not establish that CLIP works only in English or that it is always more accurate. ShotSelect: one product-specific example

ShotSelect says it uses on-device CLIP embeddings for photo search, that its free tier runs on the Mac, and that it supports macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon and Intel. Those are ShotSelect’s own claims and listed requirements; they do not establish what other CLIP apps support, and requirements may change. ShotSelect features

Which should you use?

Your search More directly documented fit What to check
Find a person, place, date or event Photos documents all four categories. Whether Photos has recognized or organized the target as expected.
Find a recognizable object or scene Both approaches may be relevant: Apple documents object and scene search, while CLIP can support descriptive visual queries. Try the actual terms you would use; documentation alone does not show which returns better results.
Search with an ordinary-language description that may not appear in metadata Contextual CLIP search explicitly supports this mode in Immich. Check the chosen app’s query behavior, language guidance and media support.
Find a video or a particular moment in one Not established as an equivalent capability by the available Apple and CLIP documentation. Verify whether the specific app indexes video and can find the content or moment you need.

For privacy, distinguish Apple’s on-device processing statement from a third-party vendor’s own claims. ShotSelect says its free tier runs on-device, but that statement is not an independent audit. For compatibility, check the current requirements of the particular CLIP app rather than treating ShotSelect’s macOS 12+ listing as a general CLIP requirement.

How to compare them fairly on your Mac

There is no sourced, controlled comparison of Photos and a CLIP implementation using the same library, queries and success measure. To decide for your own workflow, run a small test instead of treating feature descriptions as an accuracy ranking:

  1. Use the same files. Confirm what the CLIP app imports or indexes and whether it can work with the library you use in Photos. The cited documentation does not establish a like-for-like setup process.
  2. Choose targets before searching. Include a known person or date, a recognizable object or scene, and a target you can describe in ordinary language.
  3. Run equivalent searches. Search each app for the same target using the closest query each supports. Note the query, whether the target appears near the top, and how long it takes to reach a useful result.
  4. Check the result itself. Confirm the app opens the intended original, not just a similar-looking item or a thumbnail.
  5. Record misses as well as hits. Include the library, macOS version, apps and queries in your notes. A result from one collection does not prove which approach is better for every library.

What the evidence can—and cannot—settle

The product descriptions establish useful differences in search modes, but they do not show that either approach finds media more accurately overall. They provide no common test set, shared queries or success metric for a direct comparison. A defensible choice is therefore conditional: start with Photos if its built-in categories match how you look for items; try a CLIP-based app if describing visual content is central to your searches. Your own same-library test is the way to determine which works better for your collection.
