A Git working tree mounted from a NAS can make solo development across multiple computers simpler: there is one copy to open, so you do not have to remember to push changes before switching machines. The trade-off is that Git and your editor still read and write files across the network. That can make routine operations slower than a local clone, and it leaves the working copy dependent on the connection.
How the ScsDriver setup works
In a DEV Community article, author 疏影 describes enabling SSH on a NAS, mounting a directory over SFTP with ScsDriver, assigning the mount a Windows drive letter, and running Git commands against that path. The author reports using git status, git commit, git log, and git worktree add this way. This is one account of a setup, not a compatibility guarantee for every NAS, Windows version, repository, or Git operation. Read the author’s account.

The appeal is a single shared working directory: open it from another machine and the latest saved files are already there, without a separate push-and-pull routine just to move work between your own computers. The cost is that file access travels over the network. A mapped drive does not make the NAS filesystem local, and a network interruption can interrupt access to the working tree.
What the author’s timings show
The following measurements are reported by 疏影 in the DEV Community article; the captured page result does not show its year. They are not independently verified, and the article does not describe enough benchmark methodology to treat them as representative performance figures. Source: DEV Community article.

| Operation | Local clone | SFTP-mounted repository |
|---|---|---|
git status, 1,000 files |
80 ms | 1.2 seconds |
git status, 10,000 files |
200 ms | 8 seconds |
git commit, 10 files |
100 ms | 600 ms |
git log --oneline -100 |
50 ms | 200 ms |
| Branch checkout | 1 second | 1.5 seconds |
| First VS Code open | Described as instant | 2–3 seconds |
The pattern in these author-reported results is more important than any single number: a metadata-heavy check such as git status can involve many file operations, so the reported gap widens as file counts grow. The author also says large rebases and merges are slow and suggests doing those operations on a local clone. These timings are not a prediction for your network or repository.
Mounted working tree, local clone, or NAS remote?
These approaches solve different problems. Git supports cloning from SSH URLs as well as local repository paths and file:// URLs; a local clone keeps the working repository on your computer, while SSH lets Git communicate with a repository server. Git’s clone documentation describes the available transports.

| Workflow | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| NAS working tree mounted over SFTP | One developer who values opening the same working copy on more than one computer and has a reliable network | File operations depend on network latency; the shared tree is unavailable when the connection is down |
| Local clone on each computer | Fast filesystem operations, offline work, or large and latency-sensitive Git operations | Each clone is independent, so moving uncommitted work between computers requires another transfer method; committed work can be shared through a remote |
| Local clone with a NAS-hosted SSH remote | A developer who wants local working files but wants the NAS to host the shared Git repository | Requires pushing and fetching between the clone and remote rather than editing one shared working tree |
Synology documents a NAS-hosted option for DSM 7: enable SSH, create a bare repository, and clone from the NAS over SSH. This keeps the working clone on the workstation and uses the NAS as a remote; the instructions are specific to Synology DSM 7. Synology’s SSH Git repository guide.
A mounted filesystem is not automatically faster or simpler for Git’s underlying work. Pro Git discusses file-based repositories on shared mounted filesystems, while warning that mounting a remote disk can be difficult and slow compared with network-based access; it notes that NFS access may be slower than SSH, where Git can operate on local disks at each end. This is general Git guidance, not a ScsDriver-specific test. Pro Git: The Protocols.

Choose based on how you work
Consider a mount for a small, convenience-first project
A mounted working tree may suit a solo developer with a small repository, a dependable low-latency network, and a strong preference for one working copy across machines. It reduces the manual sync step between those machines, but it does not remove the need for backups or make concurrent edits from multiple computers safe by itself.
Use local clones when speed or offline access matters
Choose local working copies if you often work without a network, have many files, or want filesystem-heavy Git commands and editor indexing to run against local storage. For substantial rebases and merges, the ScsDriver workflow’s author also recommends switching to a local clone.

Use the NAS as a remote when you want a middle ground
An SSH-hosted Git repository on the NAS separates the working files from the shared repository: each computer works locally, and Git transfers committed changes when you fetch or push. This means more explicit synchronization than a shared mount, but avoids making every working-tree file access a network operation.
What to verify before relying on ScsDriver
The cited article claims a seven-day trial and a price of $9.99 per year, but those details were not independently verified against an accessible official product page. Treat them as unconfirmed rather than current availability or pricing. No official ScsDriver statement or named-person quotation is established in the cited material, so the compatibility and timing claims above are attributed to the article’s author.
