The right surround sound system depends on your room, receiver, and tolerance for extra boxes—not on a universal ranking. For a conventional home theater, start with a matched 5.1 speaker package and budget for an AV receiver; choose a soundbar with wireless surrounds if fewer cables and simpler placement matter more than separate components. The options below reflect What Hi-Fi?’s tested shortlist, not independent listening tests or a guarantee that one system will suit every room.
What counts as a surround sound speaker system?
“Surround sound speakers” can mean a passive set of separate speakers, a package assembled from matched components, or a powered soundbar system with satellite speakers. These are not interchangeable in setup: a passive package normally needs an AV receiver, while a soundbar system connects directly to a TV and may use wireless satellites.

A 5.1 layout has five main speakers—front left and right, a center channel, and two surrounds—plus one subwoofer. In Dolby’s channel notation, the first number is ear-level speakers, the second is subwoofers, and a third number indicates height speakers. A 5.1.2 arrangement therefore adds two height speakers to a 5.1 layout. Dolby’s speaker setup guide explains the layout.
- Center: carries dialogue; Dolby says center speakers are primarily used to deliver dialogue.
- Front left and right: establish the main front soundstage.
- Surrounds: place effects and music around the listening position.
- Subwoofer: reproduces bass.
- Height speakers: add overhead effects in layouts such as 5.1.2 or 5.1.4.
Five surround sound options to consider
What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 surround sound shortlist includes both separate-speaker packages and soundbars. Its review judgments below are attributed to that publication; they are not a universal ranking or independent test results.
#1 Best Overall
- 5.1.2ch Surround Sound System: A 5.1.2-channel system featuring up-firing speakers, surround sound, and a powerful subwoofer creates lifelike, multidimensional audio. Feel the Sky Around You—raindrops falling from above, helicopters circling overhead, thunder rumbling in all directions. Sound isn’t just around you, it engulfs you, as if the ceiling disappeared. This is Dolby Atmos: not just heard, but felt.
- Up-Firing Drivers with Neodymium Core: The up-firing channels use neodymium internal magnets and 18-core large voice coils to enhance height precision and vertical throw. This aerospace-grade configuration ensures better high-frequency dynamics, delivering focused and elevated sound images that unlock the true potential of Dolby Atmos.
- 360° SurroundX Audio: SurroundX technology combines two rear surround speakers and dual up-firing Atmos drivers to build a true 360° sound field. Powered by intelligent spatial algorithms, the system precisely positions audio around and above you—enhancing Dolby Atmos with a more natural, three-dimensional soundstage. Note: Not compatible with DTS.
- Lossless Audio Transmission: Unlock full Dolby Atmos performance with HDMI eARC, supporting up to 37Mbps bandwidth for lossless 5.1.2-channel audio. Compared to regular ARC, eARC delivers richer detail and better surround effects with no compression. With CEC, your TV and soundbar work as one—power, volume, and input sync automatically for effortless control.
- Advanced App Control: Customize every detail of your audio experience with the Ultimea App. Fine-tune your surround sound with 13-step level adjustment (-6 to +6), optimize with a 10-band graphic EQ, and choose from 121 preset sound settings. Enjoy seamless OTA updates that unlock new features and keep your system performing at its peak.
| System | What it includes | Best fit and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Home Cinema Pack | Four Diamond 12.1 bookshelf speakers, a 12.C center, and a powered SW10 subwoofer; What Hi-Fi? lists the subwoofer at 200W. | What Hi-Fi? lists it as an affordable 5.1 package and describes it as suitable for movies and music, with a wide, uniform soundfield. It is a component set, so allow for a receiver and space for all the speakers. |
| KEF Q Concerto Meta 5.1 | Q Concerto Meta front speakers, Q1 Meta bookshelf surrounds, Q6 center, and Kube 12 MIE subwoofer. | What Hi-Fi? lists it as a premium 5.1 system and reports strong tonal consistency. Its review notes that the center and subwoofer are large and that stands add cost. |
| KEF R Meta 5.1 | R7 Meta floorstanding fronts, two R3 Meta standmount surrounds, an R6 Meta center, and a KC92 subwoofer. | What Hi-Fi? identifies this as a high-end package. Its review notes substantial cabinet size and cost, and says the R7 Meta fronts benefit from careful amplifier matching. |
| Bowers & Wilkins 606/607 S3 component package | 606 S3 fronts, 607 S3 surrounds, HTM6 S3 center, and ASW610 subwoofer. | What Hi-Fi? recommends this combination, which is retailer-assembled or DIY rather than a single bundled package. Include stands in your budget where needed. |
| Samsung HW-Q990F soundbar system | A Dolby Atmos soundbar, two wireless satellite speakers, and a subwoofer. | Included in What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 roundup as a convenience-oriented alternative. It is not a passive speaker package: its appeal is simpler placement and fewer trailing cables. |
How to choose for your room and budget
Calculate the complete system cost
For passive speakers, the package price is only part of the bill. What Hi-Fi? says separate speaker packages need an AV receiver or home cinema amplifier. Also account for stands, speaker wire, and any extra height speakers. The publication suggests the Denon AVR-X2800H with the Wharfedale package as one pairing; treat that as an example, not a universal compatibility guarantee or a recommendation for every market variant.
Before buying, check the exact receiver and speaker documentation for channel count, impedance and power guidance, HDMI requirements, and supported audio formats. Do not assume that a receiver can drive any package simply because both are labeled home theater equipment.

Match cabinet size and placement to the space
Measure room and furniture space for front speakers, the center, subwoofer, and stands. Floorstanders need more room than bookshelf speakers, and a large center cabinet must fit near the TV. What Hi-Fi?’s review specifically flags the KEF Q package’s large center and subwoofer, while the R Meta package uses floorstanding R7 Meta fronts.

Decide whether you need height effects
A standard 5.1 layout has no height channels. For Atmos height effects, a 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 arrangement adds two or four height speakers. These can be installed in the ceiling or use upward-firing units that reflect sound from it. In-ceiling speakers require installation; reflected systems depend on the room’s ceiling and placement.

Choose for both movies and music if you use both
What Hi-Fi? describes the Wharfedale combination as suited to both movies and music and reports tonal consistency for the KEF Q package. Those review observations can help narrow a shortlist, but they do not establish a best choice for every listener, room, or mix of content.

Weigh component flexibility against convenience
Separate speakers allow discrete placement and a component upgrade path, but add boxes, cables, stands, and a receiver. Soundbar systems simplify wiring and placement, though satellites still need room and power. The right trade-off depends on how much setup you want to manage and whether separate speaker placement is a priority.

Use Dolby’s setup guide as the general starting point, then follow the instructions for your specific speakers and receiver. Room shape, furniture, and speaker design can change what works best.

Step 2: Test the System to Make Sure it Set Up Properly - Turn on the subwoofer which is under the power supply, and test the remote control and Bluetooth connection (Connect Bluetooth named "Bobtot B38" on "BT" mode) to ensure everything is working properly.
- Place the front left and right speakers at the front of the listening area. Klipsch’s general home theater setup guidance suggests equal spacing and an equilateral triangle between the two fronts and the main listening position.
- Position the center directly above or below the TV, facing the listening area. Keep it near the screen so dialogue appears to come from the picture.
- Place the surrounds to the sides or behind the main listening position, according to Dolby’s general guidance and the speaker maker’s instructions.
- Set speaker height and angle as the design allows. Dolby recommends the main speakers be about seated ear height and suggests experimenting with toe-in and placement rather than treating one angle as mandatory.
- Try more than one subwoofer location. Dolby notes that bass is not directional, so the subwoofer can go in several parts of the room. Use receiver calibration if available and compare positions.
- Install height channels according to their type. In-ceiling speakers need suitable installation; upward-firing units rely on ceiling reflections, so the ceiling and the manufacturer’s placement guidance matter.
Do you need a receiver for surround sound speakers?
Usually, yes, if you mean a passive package of separate speakers: it needs an AV receiver or home cinema amplifier to power and manage the channels. A powered soundbar system is different; What Hi-Fi? says soundbars connect directly to a TV by HDMI or optical. Check the specific system’s connection and format requirements before purchase.
