Nanoleaf’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration lets compatible Nanoleaf lights respond to natural-language requests in AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude. It requires a Nanoleaf account and the Nanoleaf Desktop App, which must remain open while the connection is in use. Nanoleaf documents the integration now; an Android Authority report dated September 30, 2026, said one-click connections for ChatGPT, Claude, and other assistants were expected in October, but Nanoleaf’s official page does not confirm a separate rollout date for each assistant.
What Nanoleaf MCP does
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to apps and services. In this case, it gives a compatible assistant a way to send supported lighting commands to Nanoleaf devices linked to your account. Nanoleaf describes requests such as “help me focus for the next hour” or “Create a cozy Scene for movie night in the living room.” Other possible prompts include “turn my bedroom lights off,” “dim lights to 50%,” and “make my room feel like sunset.” These are examples, not a guarantee that every assistant will interpret every request correctly.

Nanoleaf’s official feature page says MCP can turn devices on or off, adjust brightness, color and color temperature, check device status, and create, manage or play Scenes and Playlists. Scene options include Paint, Rhythm and Dynamic Scenes. It also lists Circadian Lighting and supported 4D, Screen Mirror and Sync+ features. Which controls are available depends on the device, firmware and AI platform.
Nanoleaf’s examples include coordinating a room’s mood from a prompt, matching colors from a photo, and setting up front and background lights for a video call. They illustrate intended uses; they are not independent tests of accuracy or performance. Nanoleaf says commands normally take a few seconds to complete as the assistant processes the request and sends it through the Desktop App.

Which devices and setup are required?
Nanoleaf lists Shapes, Lines, Canvas, Elements, Skylight, 4D and Essentials among the supported product families. That list does not mean every feature works on every model: Nanoleaf says compatibility and capabilities vary by product and firmware. Check Nanoleaf’s current compatibility information for your exact device before relying on a particular control.
You need a Nanoleaf account, and the lights must be connected to the Nanoleaf Desktop App using a Nanoleaf Cloud account. Nanoleaf states: “The Nanoleaf Desktop App must remain open and running while you use the integration.” The Nanoleaf mobile app is still needed to pair new devices and update firmware; MCP works alongside it rather than replacing it. The official instructions are on Nanoleaf’s MCP page, which links to a setup guide.

What it does not do
- No schedules or routines: Nanoleaf says MCP does not support schedules or routines. It is for supported commands and scene operations, not setting up recurring automation.
- No control of other brands: Nanoleaf’s FAQ says the integration controls Nanoleaf devices connected to your account, not non-Nanoleaf lights.
- Availability depends on the assistant: A device feature Nanoleaf lists may not be available through every AI platform, and the integration does not promise that open-ended prompts will always produce the intended result.
Availability: what “soon” means
Nanoleaf’s official page documents the integration and links its setup guide, but it does not set a dated release schedule for each assistant’s one-click connection. Android Authority reported on September 30, 2026, that Nanoleaf was launching its MCP server that day and that pre-built one-click integrations for ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants were expected in October. Treat that October timing as a report published on that date, not as a guaranteed availability date. The report also said developers could access Nanoleaf’s MCP tools and guides.
Cost and AI usage limits
Nanoleaf says, “Nanoleaf MCP is free for all Nanoleaf customers.” That does not remove any limits or charges imposed by the connected AI service: messages count against the assistant’s normal usage allowance. Nanoleaf says it does not charge for or control that allowance.

What happens to device information?
According to Nanoleaf’s privacy disclosures, MCP reads your device list, device states, layouts and Scenes to control the lights. Nanoleaf says it does not access contacts, location history or payment information. The AI assistant receives device information needed to answer a request, such as device names and current states, and that information is handled under the AI provider’s privacy policy. Nanoleaf says the assistant receives a secure access token rather than your Nanoleaf password. You can remove the connector in the assistant’s settings or revoke its access through your Nanoleaf account.
These are Nanoleaf’s statements about its integration. The AI provider’s privacy policy governs information handled by that provider, so review it as well when deciding whether to connect an account.
