Start with Nano Banana 2.1 if you want a fast, general-purpose image-generation and editing model and it is available in your Google workflow. Compare Nano Banana Pro for a high-fidelity creative task where complex composition matters. Use Nano Banana 2 when you need to keep an existing workflow built specifically around that model. None is a universal winner: Google’s evaluations favor 2.1 on several measures, while Google still positions Pro for high-fidelity work requiring maximum factual accuracy.
Which Nano Banana model should you use?
| Model | Best fit | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2.1 | Fast, general-purpose image generation and conversational editing; a sensible first choice when available. | Google describes it as an update to Nano Banana 2 with improvements to visual quality, prompt adherence, consistency across editing turns, and text rendering. Its performance claims are not a guarantee for a particular prompt. |
| Nano Banana Pro | High-fidelity creative work, especially complex compositions. | Google positions Pro for high-fidelity tasks requiring maximum factual accuracy. That positioning does not prove every Pro output is more accurate than a 2.1 output. |
| Nano Banana 2 | Reproducing a workflow built around the model or using it where 2.1 is not available. | Google identifies it as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image; its current documentation describes 2.1 as the update. |
What distinguishes the three models?
Nano Banana 2.1: the current starting point
Google’s developer documentation identifies Nano Banana 2.1 as gemini-nano-banana-2.1 and describes it as a high-efficiency model for image generation and conversational editing. Google says it retains Flash-level speed and cost efficiency while improving on Nano Banana 2 in visual quality, prompt adherence, multi-turn character consistency, and text rendering. Its API documentation lists 1K–4K image outputs, multiple aspect ratios, thinking levels, and web and image search grounding. Image generation does not support audio inputs; Google Search grounding does not support using real-world images of people retrieved from web search. Google’s Nano Banana 2.1 documentation describes the model and its API capabilities.

Nano Banana 2: Flash image generation
Google introduced Nano Banana 2 as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, combining image capabilities it associated with Pro with Flash speed. Its February 26, 2026 announcement highlighted instruction following, image text rendering and translation, subject consistency, and image-search grounding. That announcement describes Nano Banana 2 at launch; for current 2.1 capabilities, refer to the later 2.1 documentation rather than assuming every launch detail carries over unchanged. Google’s Nano Banana 2 announcement provides its original positioning.
Nano Banana Pro: high-fidelity work
Google introduced Nano Banana Pro, also called Gemini 3 Pro Image, for high-fidelity, visually sophisticated image generation and editing. Its November 20, 2025 announcement described text rendering, reference-image consistency, editing controls, and 2K/4K output at launch. Google later positioned Pro for high-fidelity tasks requiring maximum factual accuracy. These are product descriptions and positioning, not proof that Pro always produces more accurate results. Google’s Nano Banana Pro announcement gives its launch details.

How do Google’s published evaluations compare?
Google DeepMind’s model card, published October 6, 2026, reports the following evaluation results. The figures below are Google’s own results, not independent benchmark replications or universal quality scores; the model card does not establish that a particular user will get the same relative outcome on a specific prompt.
| Evaluation (Google DeepMind, October 2026) | Nano Banana 2.1 with Thinking | Nano Banana 2.1 without Thinking | Nano Banana 2 | Nano Banana Pro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overall Preference, text-to-image | 1050 ± 14 | 1015 ± 13 | 990 ± 7 | 935 ± 8 |
| Infographic Design | 1048 ± 17 | 1001 ± 17 | 961 ± 12 | 912 ± 12 |
| Infographic Factuality | 0.521 | 0.328 | 0.179 | 0.265 |
| General Editing | 1026 ± 12 | 980 ± 15 | 938 ± 11 | 939 ± 10 |
In those reported categories, 2.1 leads the other listed models. The “with Thinking” and “without Thinking” results are separate entries, so do not assume the higher result applies to every 2.1 configuration. A higher infographic-factuality evaluation score also does not establish that an infographic generated for your use is factually correct. How to choose for your task
- Choose 2.1 first for a general image prompt, iterative edits, or text in an image when you want the newer fast model and can access it.
- Try Pro as well when you need a polished, complex composition or want to evaluate its high-fidelity workflow against your own requirements.
- Stay with 2 when your existing process depends on Gemini 3.1 Flash Image or when 2.1 is not offered in the workflow you use.
- Verify consequential facts in diagrams, infographics, labels, and other generated visuals against authoritative sources, whichever model you choose.
For a fair comparison, use the same prompt, references, aspect ratio, and editing instructions in each model, then judge the results against your actual needs: iteration speed, visual quality, instruction following, readable text, consistency across edits, and factual requirements. Model access and settings can affect the comparison, so note which model and options you used.

Google’s 2.1 model card also notes occasional persistence of a subject’s pose during image editing, spatial-localization confusion such as left/right errors, and limitations in advanced world knowledge, 3D reasoning, and factuality. For a visual where those details matter, inspect the generated result rather than relying on the model name or benchmark position.
