Start with Magento’s built-in bin/magento CLI for standard Commerce installation and configuration work. Add n98-magerun2 when you need extra database, admin, debugging, development, or system-maintenance commands. The tools can be used together; neither is a universal replacement for the other.
What is the difference between n98-magerun2 and bin/magento?
<magento_root>/bin/magento is the command-line interface Adobe documents for Commerce. Its core remit includes installation and configuration tasks, cache clearing, index management, static view-file deployment, class and dependency-injection configuration generation, translation dictionaries and packages, and compiling CSS from Less. Adobe describes it as Symfony-based and extensible; run bin/magento list to see commands available in your installation. Commands for disabled modules do not appear. Adobe’s CLI documentation explains its scope and use.

n98-magerun2 is a separate toolbox for Magento 2, Mage-OS, and Adobe Commerce. Its commands extend into administration, database operations, development, integrations, scripting, and system maintenance, alongside cache and index work. For example, its documentation lists admin:user:list, db:dump, dev:console, sys:check, and sys:cron:list. See the n98-magerun2 project documentation for its command groups and current commands.

| Task | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Install or configure Adobe Commerce; deploy static content; clear cache or manage indexes | bin/magento |
These are standard platform tasks in Adobe’s documented CLI remit. |
| Inspect, dump, or import a database | n98-magerun2 for its documented database commands | Its toolbox includes database operations such as db:dump and db:console. |
| List or manage admin accounts | n98-magerun2 | Its administration commands include admin:user:list. |
| Debug, inspect cron, or run development utilities | n98-magerun2 when its command fits | Examples include dev:console, sys:cron:run, and sys:cron:list. Adobe’s debugging guidance also points readers to n98-magerun2 for useful command-line capabilities. Adobe’s debugging guidance names several examples. |
| Use both standard platform commands and extra utilities | Both | The official documentation describes separate, complementary scopes rather than a full command-for-command replacement. |
For any command, check what your installed application exposes and read that command’s help before running it. n98-magerun2’s usage guide documents command-specific help, root-directory selection, configuration options, and loading external modules. The n98-magerun2 usage documentation covers these options.

Check compatibility before installing n98-magerun2
The recommended n98-magerun2 release depends on the Commerce or Magento Open Source version, Mage-OS version, PHP version, and operating system. The project’s compatibility table currently recommends the following pairings; treat them as release guidance, not a guarantee that every command works in every environment.
| Platform version | n98-magerun2 guidance |
|---|---|
| Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source 2.4.8+; Mage-OS 1.2.x+ | v9.0.0 or later |
| Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source 2.4.5–2.4.7; Mage-OS 1.0.x–1.1.x | v8.0.0 or later |
| Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source 2.4.4 | v7.5.0 is listed as the last compatible release |
| Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source 2.3.x | v5.2.0 is listed as the last compatible release |
| Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source 2.2.x or 2.1.x | v3.2.0 is listed as the last compatible release |
| Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source 2.0.x | v2.2.3 is listed as the last compatible release |
PHP and operating-system requirements can narrow the choice further. The n98-magerun2 compatibility table says v10.0.0 requires PHP 8.2 or later and advises users on PHP 8.1 or lower to remain on the v9.x line. It recommends v9.0.0 or later for PHP 8.5 and 8.4, and v8.0.0 or later for PHP 8.3 and 8.2. Windows is not fully supported; the project specifically notes that commands including db:dump and install are unavailable there. Confirm the latest guidance in the n98-magerun2 compatibility table against your exact environment before choosing a release.
Install and run n98-magerun2 with dependency isolation in mind
The project documents a PHAR installation for daily use: download the archive, verify its SHA-256 checksum, make it executable, then check its version. It also offers a Composer distribution package that installs the PHAR without package dependencies. The project cautions against using its source package for everyday work because dependencies from the project and Magento can make it incompatible across installations. Follow the current installation instructions for the exact commands and release asset.
For Magento’s built-in CLI, Adobe says to run commands as a user with permission to write to the Commerce filesystem. Its documentation gives examples of invoking commands as the filesystem owner; use the equivalent account and permissions appropriate to your server rather than assuming an interactive shell user can safely perform every operation. Adobe’s command-line guidance covers filesystem ownership and invocation.

Make the choice based on your environment, not a universal ranking
- Use
bin/magentoas the default for standard platform setup and configuration tasks documented by Adobe. - Add n98-magerun2 when its specific database, admin, debugging, development, or system commands address work you actually do.
- Before adopting it, match its release to your Commerce, Magento Open Source, or Mage-OS version, PHP version, and operating system, and confirm the permissions needed for the operation.
- Keep both available when your work spans core platform tasks and n98-specific utilities. The official documentation does not provide a complete feature-equivalence matrix or command-speed comparison, so there is no documented basis for naming one a universal winner.
