Choose Make for a managed, visual-first automation builder and a broad catalog of standard app integrations. Choose n8n if billing by complete workflow execution, code-oriented flexibility, or the option to self-host better suits your team. Neither is automatically cheaper: Make counts credits largely by module action, while n8n counts complete workflow runs. Estimate the same real workload in both before choosing.
The prices below are vendor-published figures checked on October 7, 2026. They use different currencies, billing cadences, usage units, allowances, and features, so they are not a like-for-like price comparison. Confirm the live plan selector and terms before purchasing.

How do n8n and Make charge for usage?
The key difference is the unit each platform bills against. n8n bases its listed pricing on monthly workflow executions, regardless of the number of steps in an execution. Make generally counts module actions as credits, so two scenarios that run the same number of times can consume very different amounts.
n8n counts complete workflow executions
n8n’s official pricing page says, “Pricing based on monthly workflow executions, regardless of complexity.” This is the vendor’s description of its billing model, not an independent cost study. Its listed paid plans include unlimited steps per execution, so a multi-step run still counts as an execution under that model. See n8n’s official pricing.

Make counts credits, usually for module actions
Make says each module action—such as adding a spreadsheet row or fetching email data—counts as a credit. Most actions consume one credit, but some features consume more. A scenario may use from two credits to thousands in a run depending on its complexity. Router and listed error-handler modules are exceptions that do not consume credits. See Make’s official pricing.
Make says credits expire at the end of the subscription term. If you run out, scenarios stop until you add credits, though webhooks may queue within the stated storage limits. Check the plan selector and billing cadence: the prices below use the page’s displayed 10,000-credits-per-month selection where applicable.

Do not treat 10,000 Make credits as equivalent to 10,000 n8n executions. Estimate your monthly run volume, then count the Make module actions and any higher-credit features in a representative scenario. For n8n, count the complete workflow runs. Price that same workload against the applicable plans and verify current allowances, billing cadence, and plan limits with each vendor.

Which platform fits your team?
Choose based on workload and cost predictability
If each run contains many actions, n8n’s execution-based unit may be simpler to estimate. With Make, a short scenario and a many-step scenario can consume very different credits even when run equally often. These are differences in billing mechanics, not evidence that one product is always less expensive. Include data volume and AI-related actions in a Make estimate where relevant.
Choose the builder that fits your technical comfort
Make presents its builder as visual and drag-and-drop. In its own comparison, Make characterizes its product as more accessible and n8n as requiring deeper technical knowledge; that is the vendor’s positioning, not independent usability testing. n8n lists code steps and custom API requests, which may suit technical users who want that flexibility.
Rank #4
Check the exact integrations and actions
Make advertises more than 3,000 standard apps, a vendor-stated catalog figure that does not establish the quality or coverage of any particular integration. n8n says its plans include every integration and offers nodes and custom requests. For either platform, confirm that the specific app, action, authentication method, and relevant limits support your workflow.

Make’s pricing page lists AWS hosting in the EU or North America. n8n says hosted plans store data in the EU on servers in Frankfurt, Germany. With self-hosted n8n, you choose the host and take responsibility for deployment and maintenance. Confirm the region, contract, and security controls relevant to your plan and jurisdiction.

Compare team governance and support at the right tier
Review collaboration, roles, SSO, environments, execution history, support commitments, and enterprise terms for the plans you are considering. n8n’s pricing page says Business is self-hosted only and that Enterprise support includes an SLA. Make lists enterprise support and security features, while pricing Enterprise by custom quote. Check the current feature matrix rather than assuming a feature is included at every tier.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When does self-hosted n8n make sense?
Self-hosting can suit a team able to run and maintain its own workflow infrastructure, but it is not cost-free to operate. Include server costs, monitoring, backups, updates, and staff time in the total-cost estimate. The required operating work depends on your deployment; no particular server or hardware is established as necessary for this comparison.
Also check the license before using the free Community Edition for client work. n8n’s official guidance says an organization may build and run client workflows on its own instance under conditions, including that clients cannot access the editor or change workflow logic. Hosting n8n as a service, white-labeling it, or letting outside users build or configure workflows requires a commercial license. Review the official n8n license guidance for your specific deployment and ask n8n about edge cases.

- Lean toward Make if you want a managed visual builder, do not want to operate workflow infrastructure, and your expected module actions fit the selected credit tier.
- Lean toward n8n Cloud if execution-based billing, its integration and code options, and the hosted plan’s features suit your workflow.
- Consider n8n Community Edition if your team can self-host and maintain it and your intended use complies with the Sustainable Use License.
- Pause for a workload and requirements estimate if you have high volume, large bundles, AI actions, strict data-location needs, client-facing automation, or governance requirements. Confirm applicable limits and contractual terms with each vendor.
No independent head-to-head study establishing relative cost, reliability, or outcomes is cited here, and the prices alone cannot settle those questions. The best fit depends on your required apps and actions, workflow volume and complexity, hosting preference, technical capacity, jurisdiction, and plan-specific governance needs.
