There are two different obstacles players may mean by the “red crystal door” in God of War (2018): a magically sealed door opened with the Magic Chisel, or red sap cleared with Shatter Crystal and an Atreus Shock Arrow. Check what is physically blocking your path, then use the matching method below. The distinction matters in Chapter 8, “Behind the Lock,” where both puzzles appear. Prima Games’ Chapter 8 walkthrough and GameFAQs guides cover the sequence.
First identify what is blocking the path
- Metal door with a lock plate: use the Magic Chisel to find and break its binding points. Do not shoot red crystal at it.
- Red, glowing sap covering an opening or object: throw Shatter Crystal onto the sap and detonate it with Atreus’ Shock Arrow.
- Runic Gate nearby: its lock is a separate puzzle involving three runic seal stones. The red sap and crystal beside it are for a nearby coffin, not the gate.
Open the magically sealed door with the Magic Chisel
- Interact with the sealed door to start the Chisel sequence.
- Move the Chisel piece across the lock plate. Watch for it to glow most strongly; that indicates a binding point. A GameFAQs walkthrough also notes that controller vibration is strongest at the correct spot.
- Strike the plate at that point. Move the Chisel to each remaining strong-glow point and strike again until the lock plate breaks.
- Pull the door open.
Clear red sap with Shatter Crystal and a Shock Arrow
Corridor puzzle with the blue crystal
- Break the wooden debris in the alcove to reach the Shatter Crystal.
- Throw a piece at the red sap holding the blue crystal overhead, then have Atreus shoot it with a Shock Arrow.
- Pick up the freed blue crystal and place it on the stand.
- Switch Atreus to Light Arrows and have him shoot the crystal to reveal the Realm Tear.
Sap-covered coffin beside the Runic Gate
Fetch another piece of Shatter Crystal, throw it at the sap covering the coffin, and have Atreus detonate it with a Shock Arrow. In the nearby basin sequence, fire a Shock Arrow at the Shatter Crystal in the metal basin to the right of the gate to drop the basin, then shoot it again to clear the sap on the coffin. These are ways to reach the coffin; they do not unlock the Runic Gate.

Open the nearby Runic Gate
Find and break all three runic seal stones. Their locations are:
- Above the passage behind you.
- Inside a hole in the far wall, viewed from the balcony.
- Near the top of an icefall, visible from the lower balcony.
The gate opens when its three seals are broken. For the chapter’s full route through Jarl’s Stronghold and Jarl’s Port, see Prima Games’ Chapter 8 walkthrough.
