The clearest way to understand it is through a concrete model: a college whose students, courses, faculty, departments, projects and technologies are linked to one another. This article walks through that model, explains where a graph database earns its place, and flags which claims need checking against AWS’s own pages before you rely on them.
What the source article covers
The walkthrough is a beginner-oriented DEV Community post, published September 16, that introduces Neptune through a college knowledge graph. It is instructional rather than a product announcement or a benchmark report. Its account of AWS features is the author’s own description, and the AWS documentation it lists was not verified in the reporting behind this piece. Treat its feature list as a starting map, not a specification.

Graphs in plain terms: nodes, edges and properties
A graph stores data as three kinds of things:
- Nodes (entities) are the things you track, such as a student, a department or a technology.
- Edges (relationships) are the labelled links between nodes, such as “belongs to”, “enrolled in” or “uses”.
- Properties are descriptive attributes attached to a node or an edge, such as a student’s graduation year or the date a faculty member started guiding a project.
The article’s simplest example chains three nodes together: a student connects to a department, and the department connects to a technology the student works with. Each hop is an edge, and the graph is simply the sum of those links. The value appears when you ask questions that follow several hops at once, rather than questions about a single table.
What Neptune is
Neptune is presented as a managed graph database for connected datasets, meaning AWS operates the underlying infrastructure while you define the graph and query it. According to the article, Neptune supports two graph models:
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Property graphs, queried with Gremlin and openCypher.
- RDF graphs, queried with SPARQL.
Confirm current query-language support on the official Neptune documentation before choosing a model, since the article is the only source behind this description and product details change over time.
The college example: what the graph is for
The article’s model connects students, courses, projects, faculty, departments and technologies. From that structure it proposes several uses:
Rank #2
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Project and course recommendations based on what a student has studied or built.
- Faculty-to-project matching, so students can find who is guiding relevant work.
- Collaboration discovery between students and faculty with overlapping interests.
- Skill graphs that map which technologies appear in which projects and courses.
- Internship matching based on shared technologies and project history.
These are proposals for what such a graph could support. The article does not report production deployments or measured outcomes for any of them.
A question that shows the model at work
The article’s motivating question is: “Show me projects related to Artificial Intelligence that use Python and were guided by faculty from the AIML department.” In a graph, the query starts at the subject node for Artificial Intelligence and follows edges to projects, then filters those projects by the Python technology node, then follows each project’s guiding-faculty edge to a faculty node and checks that faculty member’s department. Each condition is a path through the model rather than a separate lookup.
Rank #3
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.

The article contrasts this with the same question in a relational schema, where it would typically require joining several tables. It does not measure either approach, so the example illustrates how the query is expressed, not how fast it runs.
Graph or relational: how to decide
The article’s own position is that a graph model helps when relationships are central to the questions you ask, and that simple record-keeping may fit a relational database better. It also says cost and modeling complexity matter. The table below sets out the dimensions a real comparison should cover and what the article does and does not establish for each.
Rank #4
- Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Reliability, security and capability claims
The article describes Neptune as offering read replicas, continuous backup, point-in-time recovery, Availability Zone replication and automatic failover, along with VPC isolation, encryption, IAM and KMS integration. These are the article’s descriptions. Before designing around any of them, confirm the feature names, supported configurations and security details on the official AWS Neptune pages the article cites.
Recommended Free Tools
The article also attributes to AWS a design target of greater than 99.99% availability. The exact scope of that figure and the date of the AWS statement are not established by the article, so verify it on AWS’s own pages before quoting it as a current number.
Best Value

Pricing and serverless capacity
The article says Neptune Serverless adjusts capacity with workload and bills for the resources consumed. It gives no prices, regions, minimums, limits or billing units. Any cost estimate has to come from current AWS pricing, for the region and configuration you intend to use.
A checklist before you adopt a graph model
- List the five or six questions your application must answer, and count how many relationships each one crosses.
- If most questions are single-record lookups, a relational database may be the simpler choice, as the article itself suggests.
- Choose a query language (Gremlin, openCypher or SPARQL) based on your team’s skills and any standards your data already follows.
- Estimate operating effort and cost from current AWS documentation and pricing, not from the article.
- Confirm availability, backup, encryption and access-control settings against the official Neptune pages for the configuration you plan to run.
- Prototype with a small, representative slice of your data and measure your own query times before committing.
For official documentation, start from the AWS Neptune pages the article references, and check each page’s date before relying on it.
