For a local MySQL development server on an Apple Silicon Mac, choose one installation route: Homebrew for a package-manager workflow, Oracle’s native macOS package for a guided installer, or Docker Desktop when the project already uses containers. Match the server version to your project before installing. Add MySQL Workbench if you want a graphical SQL and administration client, or MySQL Shell for an interactive JavaScript, Python, or SQL interface.
Choose a server installation route
The best route depends less on the Mac’s processor than on how the project manages software, services, and data. All three routes can support local development, but they are not interchangeable management systems.

| Route | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Homebrew | Developers who already use Homebrew and want to manage MySQL through a package manager. | The current formula has an Apple Silicon bottle. The unversioned formula and versioned options such as [email protected] and [email protected] are listed in Homebrew’s MySQL formula; select the version that matches the project rather than assuming the default is suitable. |
| Oracle native package | Readers who prefer a guided macOS installer and its server startup choices. | The DMG installer requires administrator privileges. Its wizard asks for a root password and whether the server should start after installation. See Oracle’s macOS installation documentation. |
| TAR archive | Readers who need to choose a manual installation location or cannot use an administrator-level package installer. | Oracle documents a compressed TAR archive that can be installed anywhere without administrator privileges, but installation involves Terminal work and general Unix-style binary instructions. See the macOS installation documentation. |
| Docker Desktop | Projects whose development environment already runs in containers. | Docker documents installation for Apple Silicon Macs and a minimum of 4 GB RAM. That requirement is for Docker Desktop, not a recommended MySQL container configuration. See Docker’s Mac installation page. |
Before deciding, check the project’s required MySQL version, whether you need reproducible containerized services, and how you want to start, stop, and manage the server. For Docker, choose an image, tag, and persistence configuration using the relevant image documentation; the desktop installation instructions alone do not establish those details.

Install MySQL with Homebrew
Homebrew is a straightforward choice if it is already part of your development setup. Its current MySQL formula supports Apple Silicon, but the appropriate formula depends on the project’s server version. Check the live formula listing before installing or changing versions.

- Magic Keyboard is available with Touch ID, providing fast, easy and secure authentication for logins and to unlock your Mac.
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work right away.
- It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
- Open Terminal and check the project documentation for its required MySQL Server version.
- Install the matching formula. For the default formula, Homebrew lists
brew install mysql. If the project requires a specific release, check Homebrew’s versioned formulae, including options such as[email protected]and[email protected], rather than blindly installing the default. - Use Homebrew’s commands and environment to manage the installation. On Apple Silicon, Homebrew’s default prefix is
/opt/homebrew; instructions that assume/usr/localgenerally refer to Intel Mac Homebrew installations. See Homebrew’s installation documentation. - Follow the installed formula’s current instructions to start the server and connect a client. Exact service commands can vary by formula and installation state, so consult the formula’s live information instead of applying commands from the native installer workflow.
Install with Oracle’s native macOS package
Oracle’s DMG package provides a graphical installation and configuration flow. The package installation requires administrator privileges, and the wizard asks you to set the MySQL root password and choose whether the server starts after installation.
- Before starting the installer, check that another local MySQL server is not running; Homebrew-managed installations are not coordinated with Oracle’s installer.
- Download and open the MySQL macOS DMG package from Oracle’s installation page, then proceed through the package wizard.
- Set the root password when prompted and choose the server startup option that fits your workflow.
- If you chose not to start MySQL in the wizard, Oracle documents starting the package-installed server through launchd or the MySQL preference pane. These instructions apply to the native package, not Homebrew’s service management.
If you need a manual location or cannot install the package with administrator privileges, Oracle also documents a TAR archive. That route requires Terminal work; follow the archive-specific instructions rather than mixing them with the package wizard steps.

- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It features an extended layout, with document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys, which are great for gaming.
- The numeric keypad is also ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- It’s wireless and features a rechargeable battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
Avoid two local servers competing
Homebrew and Oracle’s installer do not manage or upgrade each other’s MySQL installations. Oracle’s MySQL 26.7 Reference Manual says, “The installation procedure does not recognize MySQL installations by package managers such as Homebrew.” Because separate installations may both try to use the same ports, choose one server route initially. If you deliberately keep two installations, stop one server before starting the other and verify which installation your client is connecting to.

MySQL Workbench
Workbench provides SQL development, database design and modeling, administration, and migration features. It is a client for local or remote MySQL Server; data modeling does not require a server connection. Oracle’s download page offers ARM 64-bit macOS DMG and ZIP packages. For the DMG workflow, open the downloaded file and drag MySQL Workbench into Applications. Check the current download page for the available release.

Version compatibility matters: the Workbench manual says, “MySQL Workbench is developed and tested with MySQL Server 8.0.” It may connect to MySQL Server 8.4 and later, but some features may not work with those server versions. Check the release-specific Workbench compatibility information before relying on advanced GUI features with a newer server.
MySQL Shell
MySQL Shell is an optional interactive interface for JavaScript, Python, or SQL. Homebrew’s MySQL Shell cask listing includes an Apple Silicon package. It is a separate client option; installing it does not install or start the database server.

Use Docker when the project is container-based
Docker Desktop has an Apple Silicon Mac installation path and lists a minimum of 4 GB RAM. Its Mac support page describes support for the current and two previous major macOS releases; that window changes as macOS versions change. Check Docker’s current system requirements and installation steps for your macOS version.

Use the project’s existing container configuration when available; otherwise, consult the MySQL image’s own documentation before choosing those settings.

Connect the setup to a shared environment later
A local server is for development on your Mac. If teammates or other development systems need to reach a shared database, Oracle documents managed MySQL DB Systems and connections through MySQL Shell, the command-line client, or Workbench in its DB Systems guide. That is a separate deployment choice, not a requirement for local development.
