On many Samsung TVs, the first place to check is the lower edge, near the control button or stick. The exact position depends on the model, so use that as a starting point—not a guarantee—and confirm it in your TV’s manual or model drawing.
Where to look on the TV
Check the lower bezel and underside, especially around the control stick or button, indicator light, or a small dark sensor window. Samsung’s Q9FN mechanical drawing labels the bottom-center area “Control Stick / Remote control sensor,” and the Q80CD manual refers to a remote-control sensor at the bottom. These examples support checking the bottom edge first, but do not establish one placement for every Samsung TV.

For the 65-inch Q80R, a Samsung Community accepted answer reports that the sensor for an older standard remote is in the center control panel on the underside. Treat that as a model-specific community report, not a general Samsung specification. Look up your full model number in the TV’s manual or diagram if the sensor is not obvious.

Check which remote you are using
The TV’s receiver location is only part of the question: remotes may communicate differently. Samsung’s Q80CD manual instructs owners to pair a Samsung Smart Remote; the Q80R community answer distinguishes a Bluetooth Smart Remote from an older standard IR remote. Identify both your TV model and remote model before assuming the remote depends entirely on infrared—or that Bluetooth means infrared is never involved.

Troubleshoot a remote that is not working
- Clear the likely sensor area. Remove objects directly in front of the lower edge or underside and aim the remote toward the TV. Check the exact sensor position in the model’s manual if needed.
- Try the distance and indicator check described for your model. Samsung’s Q80CD manual suggests trying the remote from 1.5–1.8 m away and checking whether the bottom sensor blinks when a button is pressed. That is Q80CD troubleshooting guidance; other models may behave differently.
- Pair the Smart Remote if required. The Q80CD manual says to hold Back and Play/Pause together for three seconds. Verify your remote’s instructions before using that button sequence on another model.
- If you use a classic IR remote, recheck line of sight and sensor location. A remote that cannot reach the receiver unobstructed may not control the TV.
- For a One Connect setup, check the documentation for both the TV and box. Whether a particular box receives a remote signal or relays infrared to another device is model-dependent; community discussion about 2019 QLED One Connect systems is conflicting.
When an external IR cable may help
Samsung documents an external IR cable for the QB98T and QM98T business displays: their manual says the sensor is on the bottom and advises connecting a separately sold cable to the IR IN port to enhance receiver performance. It lists a 7–10 m operating range and a 30° left/right angle for those displays only. Do not assume that accessory, port, or those figures apply to a consumer Samsung TV; check the manual for the exact display before buying or connecting an IR extender.
