If you want to reach a QNAP NAS remotely without using myQNAPcloud Link, Tailscale is the clearest documented low-configuration alternative: it can provide access without opening firewall ports. QNAP QVPN or a VPN-capable router are other options if you are comfortable setting up a VPN. The title’s “myQNAPcloud One” wording is ambiguous: QNAP’s documentation describes myQNAPcloud and myQNAPcloud Link, not “myQNAPcloud One” as the name of its remote-access method. This comparison therefore focuses on myQNAPcloud Link.
What myQNAPcloud Link does
myQNAPcloud Link lets you reach a QNAP NAS through a QNAP account and NAS app, using a SmartURL; manual port forwarding is not required. QNAP says Link selects a connection based on the network environment and describes the service as using relay and NAT-traversal methods. That is distinct from accessing a NAS directly through a myQNAPcloud DDNS name: not every myQNAPcloud-branded connection uses a relay.
QNAP’s setup flow involves creating a QNAP ID, associating the NAS with the account, and then connecting through the myQNAPcloud website or the generated SmartURL. Available access controls and the exact experience depend on how the NAS is configured.
Remote-access options compared
| Option | Connection approach | Inbound ports | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| myQNAPcloud Link | QNAP-managed access; Link selects a path based on the network environment, including relay/NAT traversal | No manual port forwarding is required for Link | Uses a QNAP ID and SmartURL or the myQNAPcloud website; access depends on configuration |
| Tailscale | Private device-to-device network | Access can work without opening firewall ports | Install on supported QNAP hardware and sign in on participating devices; optional subnet routing can extend access to the LAN |
| QNAP QVPN | VPN server hosted on the NAS | Typically requires forwarding the VPN service port through the router | Device and software support vary; configuration is more involved than a managed-link setup |
| VPN on a router | Connect to the home network through the router’s VPN | Depends on the router’s VPN setup | Can provide access to the NAS and other LAN resources; requires a VPN-capable router and setup |
| Synology QuickConnect | Synology-managed remote access | Synology says it does not require port forwarding or router settings | For Synology NAS devices, not an app to install on QNAP |
Choose an approach that fits your setup
Choose Tailscale for private access without port forwarding
Tailscale’s QNAP guide says its app is available in QNAP App Center for supported x86-64 and ARM64 devices. Once set up, you can access the NAS from anywhere without opening firewall ports, share it with designated users, and apply access-control policies. Tailscale also supports optional subnet-router and exit-node configurations; advanced steps such as subnet routing use the command line. You’ll need to sign in to Tailscale on the devices that should participate. Tailscale says its service is free for most personal uses, including NAS access, but check its current plan terms because they can change.

This is a practical fit if you want a private network for your own devices and selected users. The documentation establishes features, not a speed comparison or a blanket security ranking against myQNAPcloud Link.
Choose QVPN if you want a VPN endpoint on the NAS
QNAP describes QVPN as offering VPN server and client functions, with protocols including WireGuard, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, QBelt, and PPTP. Its quick-start documentation covers QTS 5.0.0, QuTS hero h5.0.0, and QuTScloud c5.0.0 and later; actual availability depends on the NAS and its software version.

With a VPN server hosted on the NAS, you may need to forward the VPN service port through your router. QNAP’s guidance is to open only the VPN service port for this setup, rather than exposing other NAS service ports. Choose this route if you are prepared to configure the VPN and router settings.
Choose a router VPN if you want access to more than the NAS
Another arrangement is to connect to a VPN hosted on your router, then reach the NAS over that tunnel. It can also provide access to other devices on your home LAN. The router must support VPN-server functionality, and the exact configuration depends on its model; confirm that capability in the router’s documentation.

Treat QuickConnect as a comparison, not a QNAP alternative
Synology’s DSM 7.4 specifications describe QuickConnect as a way for clients to connect to a Synology NAS over the internet without configuring port forwarding or router settings. It illustrates a vendor-managed approach, but it is not available as a QNAP NAS package.
Keep the NAS from being exposed unnecessarily
QNAP advises keeping a NAS behind NAT and a firewall rather than exposing its services directly to the internet. In its guidance on remote SSH, QNAP warns that “directly exposing SSH to the internet invites brute-force attacks and automated exploit scanners.” If you need remote SSH, QNAP recommends reaching it through a VPN tunnel first.

Other tools to investigate
QNAP’s August 2026 FAQ names ZeroTier among possible overlay VPN choices, but the QNAP materials cited here do not establish a current QNAP-specific installation path or compare its administration with Tailscale. Cloudflare Tunnel is another name that may arise in searches, but the sources here do not establish a relevant official Cloudflare setup for this use. Treat both as options to investigate rather than recommendations on the same documented footing as Tailscale or QVPN.
