For a steady fixed shot, secure your iPhone in a compatible holder on a tripod; for clearer speech, add a microphone suited to how the speaker moves and confirm its cable or adapter works with your exact iPhone and recording app. A cage is optional: use one when you need extra mounting points or handles, not just because you are adding a microphone.
Start with the shot you need

Apple recommends a stable surface or tripod for time-lapse, and specifically mentions a tripod for low-light time-lapse on iPhone 12 or later. Set up a fixed shot
- Place the tripod on a firm surface and attach a phone holder compatible with your iPhone’s dimensions.
- Secure the phone and frame the shot in the orientation you need. Check that the holder does not cover a lens, button, microphone opening, or the port you will use for audio or power.
- Check framing again after connecting accessories; a cable or receiver should not pull the phone out of position.
Steady a moving shot
For movement, use a supported stabilization option where it suits the shot and hold the phone with a controlled grip. Apple says Action mode improves stabilization while recording in Video mode on supported models. Enhanced Stabilization is also model-dependent; where available, it is enabled by default and slightly zooms the image, so leave room around the subject when framing. Decide whether a cage solves a real mounting need
A basic phone holder and tripod are enough for many fixed recordings. A cage is useful when you need handles or several points to attach a microphone, light, or tripod plate. For example, SmallRig describes cold-shoe mounts for accessories and 1/4-inch-20 threads for tripod or phone-stand attachment; RØDE’s cage documentation describes accessory shoes and cable routing. Those are product-specific features, not a guarantee that every cage fits every iPhone.

Before choosing a cage, verify compatibility with your exact iPhone, whether it accommodates your case, and whether it leaves the lenses, buttons, connector, and microphone openings accessible. Check the current fit and accessory details from SmallRig or RØDE.
Choose a microphone based on speaker movement

This is a placement-based way to choose, not a claim that one type has been proven to sound better in a comparative test. Verify the complete signal path before recording: microphone or transmitter, receiver if used, cable or adapter, iPhone port, case clearance, and recording app. A connector that physically fits does not by itself establish compatibility with every app or recording workflow.

Check USB-C versus Lightning
iPhone 15 and later use USB-C; earlier iPhones may use Lightning. Apple’s connector guidance says USB-C iPhone models can connect to microphones. For exact connector details, see Apple’s guide to the USB-C connector on iPhone.

Microphone makers specify different connection paths. RØDE says some Lightning setups require an MFi-certified cable or an Apple camera adapter, while its USB-C instructions call for particular cables for particular configurations. Do not assume a USB-C cable, Lightning adapter, receiver, or microphone works across all iPhone models. Check the instructions for the exact microphone and phone combination, including any case that might prevent a plug from seating fully. Set recording options for the delivery and storage you have
Open Settings > Camera > Record Video to review the resolution, frame rate, HDR, and stabilization options available on your model. Apple documents that these choices vary by model and that higher resolutions and faster frame rates create larger video files. Choose settings that meet the delivery requirements without filling storage unnecessarily; the highest option is not automatically the best choice for every recording. Audio format choices are model-dependent too. Apple says iPhone 16 or later records video in Spatial Audio by default and offers Spatial Audio, Stereo, or Mono choices. Earlier models may show different options. Check the Camera settings on your own phone rather than expecting every iPhone to have the same menu. Run a short compatibility and framing check
- Fit: The holder or cage matches the phone, fits with or without the case as intended, and permits the required orientation.
- Clearance: No lens, button, microphone opening, or needed connector is blocked.
- Audio path: The microphone, receiver if applicable, cable or adapter, port, and app are confirmed for the exact setup.
- Framing: Stabilization crop is accounted for, and the subject remains framed after accessories are attached.
- Recording settings: Resolution, frame rate, HDR, stabilization, and available audio format suit the intended delivery and storage.
