My Site Was Compromised in 48 Hours. I Thought It Was a CSS Bug.

A strange style or broken layout may be a bug—or a clue. Here’s how to check for a site compromise, preserve evidence and approach recovery safely.

A broken layout or unfamiliar style can be a clue, but it is not proof that a site has been hacked. In the incident behind this first-person account, the compromise and 48-hour timeline are the author’s report; the cause and specific symptoms have not been independently established. If your site suddenly looks wrong, check the code, files, accounts, hosting records and security warnings before treating it as a design problem.

Can a CSS bug mean your site was hacked?

Yes, a visual change can be an early sign worth investigating—but appearance alone cannot distinguish a CSS regression from an intrusion. A theme or plugin update, a deployment mistake, browser caching and malicious code can all affect what visitors see.

Look for corroborating evidence rather than diagnosing from the page’s appearance. Compare recent code and file changes with a known-good version; check for unfamiliar pages, administrator accounts or hosting activity; and review Google Search Console and browser warnings. A clean-looking homepage does not establish that every route or file is safe.

What can a compromised site look like?

Attackers do not always replace a homepage with an obvious warning. Google’s historical case studies describe hidden content and pharmaceutical links, scripts inserted into files such as footer.php, index.php and functions.php, and .htaccess rules that redirected search-engine visitors to generated spam pages. These are examples, not a checklist that every incident will match. (Google Search Central case studies)

Injected code may be placed in a new PHP or JavaScript file or added to a legitimate file. In some cases, harmful content is shown selectively, so the site may appear normal to its owner while search engines or certain visitors receive something different. (Google’s injected-URL guidance)

One scanner reporting no issue is not proof that every file, database record, account and route is clean. Application-level and remote scanners examine different aspects of a site; use them as evidence-gathering tools, not as a guarantee.

What to do first if you think your site may be compromised

  1. Document the symptom. Record what changed, when it appeared and the timezone. Note recent plugin, theme or other software changes and details about your hosting environment. WordPress.org recommends this documentation as an initial step in its hacked-site guidance.
  2. Preserve a backup before destructive changes. Keep a copy of the current state for investigation, and identify whether you have a known-clean backup to restore. A backup may make recovery easier, but restoring one without checking it can bring compromised files back. WordPress.org calls backups critical to continuity and recommends planning for them.
  3. Contact your hosting provider. Ask about suspicious activity and relevant server records, and coordinate before changing files—especially on shared hosting, where the provider may need to investigate the environment.
  4. Scan more than one layer. Use an application-level scanner and a remote scanner, and scan the computer used to administer the site. These checks cover different surfaces; a clean result from one does not certify the whole site.
  5. Decide whether to take the site offline. Google advises taking a hacked site offline while compromised pages are found and cleaned and the site is secured. If the incident is sophisticated or you cannot safely investigate it, use a qualified professional rather than making uncertain changes to a live site. See Google’s guidance for sites labeled dangerous.

How to clean up without leaving the entry point open

Removing visible spam or deleting one unfamiliar file does not address how an attacker got in. Recovery should cover the affected content and the route that allowed access, with the scope adapted to the platform and evidence found.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Review the full site: inspect files, database content, administrator and other relevant accounts, and hosting activity for changes you cannot explain.
  • Restore clean files where appropriate: for WordPress, Google’s guidance discusses replacing core files with clean copies when needed. Do not overwrite evidence or assume that replacing core files also cleans themes, plugins, uploads or database content.
  • Update software: bring the site’s software and components up to date as part of securing it.
  • Reset credentials: change relevant passwords and credentials. Google’s WordPress guidance calls for resetting them again after cleanup, not only at the beginning.
  • Investigate access: determine how the attacker gained entry and close that route before bringing the site back online.

A scanner, backup restore or password reset by itself is not proof of complete remediation. If you lack the access or expertise to assess files, database records, accounts and hosting activity, ask a qualified incident-response professional to help.

Why does Google say a site may be compromised?

Check the Security Issues report in Google Search Console and any relevant browser or Safe Browsing warning. These signals can help identify a problem, but warnings may not disappear as soon as you finish cleaning up.

Request a Google Security Issues review only after the problem is fixed. Explain what you did to clean and secure the site. Google says malware reviews usually take a few days, while reviews for hacked spam can take up to several weeks; browser and Search Console warning updates may also lag by days. A review is not a promise of immediate warning removal or search-ranking recovery. (Google Search Console Help)

What to assess A stronger recovery plan A weak signal on its own
Evidence Records the symptom and preserves a copy before destructive cleanup. The page looks normal after a quick change.
Coverage Reviews files, database content, accounts and relevant hosting activity. One scanner reports no findings.
Entry point Investigates how access occurred and closes that route. Visible malicious content was deleted.
Backup and downtime Checks that a backup is clean and weighs the risk of restoring it against keeping the site offline during investigation. A backup exists, without evidence it predates the compromise or is clean.
Capability Uses someone with appropriate access and experience for the incident’s complexity. Assumes the owner can safely diagnose every server-side change.
