How to Protect Your Kids on Their Phones: A Practical Family Setup Guide

Protecting a child on a phone takes more than setting a screen-time limit. Start by choosing a device that fits the child’s needs, then set up age-appropriate account and content controls, review location sharing, secure the device, and agree on family rules. No single age or setting works for every child; readiness depends on maturity, personality, and family circumstances.

Choose a phone that fits what your child needs

Before buying or handing over a device, decide what it needs to do. If the main goal is calls and texts, a basic phone without web browsing, apps, or location sharing may be enough. A smartphone offers more flexibility, but it also gives a child access to more services and requires more settings and ongoing discussion. Neither option is automatically right for every family.

Talk through which apps and contacts are acceptable, whether the child needs internet access, and whether location sharing is necessary. The FTC recommends considering a child’s age, personality, maturity, and family circumstances when deciding whether they are ready for a phone. Its guidance is available in Kids and Cell Phones.

Set up a child account and family controls

Use an individual child account and the family-management tools available for the phone’s operating system. These controls can help manage app access, content, communication, and schedules; a screen-time timer alone does not address all of those areas. Features and setup steps can change with the device, software version, account type, and region.

On an iPhone or iPad

Apple documents managing a child’s Screen Time through Family Sharing from a family organizer’s or parent’s device. Depending on the setup and software version, Screen Time includes controls for apps and websites, communication, schedules, content and privacy restrictions, and Communication Safety. Check Apple’s current requirements for your family’s devices and region in Use Screen Time to manage your child’s iPhone or iPad.

On Android and other supervised Google devices

Google Family Link can supervise a child’s Google Account and manage settings such as screen time on supervised devices. Available controls depend on the account and device. Google states that parents cannot use Family Link to remotely listen to calls. Account age rules and features vary by country and service; see Provide consent & add supervision to your child’s Google Account.

Third-party parental-control apps are another option, but check that they work with the phone’s existing settings before installing one. The FTC describes common controls and platform tools in How To Use Parental Controls To Keep Your Kid Safer Online. These tools can support family expectations; they do not replace conversations with your child.

Review apps, content, purchases, and contacts

Open the family controls together and check what the child can download, view, buy, and do in apps. Review age ratings and content restrictions, whether downloads or in-app purchases require approval, and who is allowed to contact the child. The available settings differ by platform, account, and device, so confirm what each control actually covers rather than assuming one setting blocks every risk.

Explain the rules in plain language: which apps are allowed, what information should not be shared, and what your child should do if an app or message feels uncomfortable. The FTC’s consumer guidance recommends discussing family rules and expectations as part of helping children build safer online habits.

Make location sharing a deliberate choice

Review location permission for each app and ask whether it needs access at all, and when. Share a child’s location only with trusted people the child knows in person; avoid broadcasting it continuously or publicly. Explain who can see the location, why sharing is enabled, and how to turn it off when it is no longer needed.

Secure the phone, accounts, and home Wi-Fi

  • Keep software current: Turn on automatic updates where available so the operating system and apps receive security fixes.
  • Protect accounts: Use unique, strong passwords for the child’s accounts; avoid reusing a family password across services.
  • Secure the home router: Change its default network name and password, and turn off remote management if it is not needed.
  • Control spending: Require a password or approval for purchases when that suits your family’s rules.

The FTC covers these steps in Help kids protect their devices.

Agree on when and where phones are used

Set rules for phone-free or phone-limited times and places, such as school, meals, homework, or bedtime. Be specific about what is allowed, and explain what happens if an agreement is broken. Revisit the rules as your child’s needs and maturity change; a plan that worked for a first phone may need adjusting later.

Keep communication open so your child can report a worrying message, cyberbullying, a scam, suspected malware, or a privacy mistake without fearing that asking for help will automatically mean losing the phone. The FTC discusses these risks and family conversations in Kids and Cell Phones. As the agency puts it, “Talking with your kids about your family’s rules and expectations is key to helping them establish good online habits.”

Know what privacy protections do—and do not—cover

In the United States, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to covered online services directed to children under 13, and to general-audience services that have actual knowledge they are collecting personal information from children under 13. In covered cases, parents may have rights involving notice and consent, reviewing information, or requesting deletion. COPPA is not a blanket guarantee for every app, every teenager, or every data practice. The FTC explains the law’s scope in Protecting Your Child’s Privacy Online.

The FTC announced finalized COPPA Rule changes in January 2025, including stronger limits around monetizing children’s data and parental opt-in for disclosures of children’s information for targeted advertising. Implementation and effective dates are legal details that can change; consult the FTC’s January 2025 announcement and current rule information for up-to-date details. This general guidance is not individualized legal advice.
