Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo set up mail exchange (MX) records safely, edit the authoritative DNS zone using the values supplied for your domain by your email provider, then verify the destination, priority, target resolution, TTL, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and any forwarding route. MX values are provider- and often domain-specific; examples in documentation are not universal settings.
1. Find the authoritative DNS zone and current provider values
DNS changes belong at the provider hosting your domain’s authoritative DNS zone—not necessarily where you bought the domain or where your website is hosted. Confirm which nameservers are authoritative, then make the change in that provider’s DNS control panel.

Get the required records from the selected email provider’s current setup instructions for your domain. Microsoft directs administrators to select the domain in its admin center to retrieve proposed values; Cloudflare likewise advises checking the email provider’s instructions for its correct MX records. Do not copy a hostname from another domain, an old screenshot, or a generic example. Microsoft’s DNS setup guide and Cloudflare’s email-record guidance explain the provider-specific process.

2. Check the MX destination and priority
An MX record tells sending mail servers where to route incoming mail for a domain. Compare every published MX record with the route you intend: a direct mailbox provider, a forwarding service, or an inbound gateway such as an archive may be the first system to accept mail.

MX priority determines preference when there is more than one destination. In Microsoft’s explanation, the lower numeric value has higher priority. Microsoft advises removing obsolete MX entries or giving them lower priority than the Microsoft 365 record, but do not remove an entry that is intentionally routing mail through a gateway or forwarding service. Confirm the intended mail flow before changing priorities.
Provider documentation includes examples, not universal values. Microsoft shows a domain-specific Microsoft 365 target such as contoso-com.mail.protection.outlook.com, priority 0, and a one-hour TTL. Cloudflare’s examples include Google Workspace’s ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM at priority 1, a Microsoft 365 domain-specific target at 0, and iCloud Mail hosts at 10. Use the exact targets and priorities shown for your domain in your provider’s current instructions. See Microsoft’s record examples and Cloudflare’s provider examples.

3. Verify that MX targets resolve and use the correct proxy mode
An MX record can be present while pointing to a misspelled, incorrect, or unreachable target. Check that each target hostname is the one specified by the intended mail route and resolves as expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the domain uses Cloudflare proxying, the MX record must be DNS-only, and its target must also be DNS-only. Cloudflare’s proxy does not handle SMTP. Keep proxy settings for web traffic separate from the hostnames that receive mail. Cloudflare documents the DNS-only requirement for mail records.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
4. Check TTL and account for DNS caching
Use the TTL required or recommended by the email provider, and allow for DNS caching when checking whether a recent change has taken effect. A record may continue to be observed with its previous value until cached information expires.
Microsoft says Exchange Online supports MX TTL values below 21,600 seconds (six hours); that threshold applies to Microsoft’s service, not to every email provider. Microsoft setup examples commonly use 3,600 seconds (one hour). Follow the selected provider’s instructions rather than treating either figure as a universal requirement. Microsoft’s Exchange Online DNS guidance covers its TTL requirement, while its setup guide shows example TTL values.

5. Keep one SPF record for all legitimate senders
SPF is published in a TXT record and identifies which services are authorized to send mail for your domain. List every service that sends as the domain, including an old provider that remains active during a migration.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft Learn states: “You can only have one SPF record per domain.” Multiple SPF records invalidate the records and can cause mail-flow problems. If a new service needs authorization, incorporate it into the existing SPF policy instead of publishing a second SPF record or deleting authorization that is still needed. Microsoft’s example, v=spf1 include:spf.protection.outlook.com -all, is for Microsoft 365; use the policy specified for your actual services. Microsoft’s setup guide gives its SPF instructions and example.

6. Review DKIM, DMARC, and forwarding together
These mechanisms have different roles. DKIM adds a signature to outgoing messages; SPF identifies authorized sending services; DMARC tells receiving systems how to handle mail that fails SPF or DKIM and can provide reporting. Microsoft recommends using SPF, DKIM, and DMARC together. Its domain-connection flow labels Microsoft 365 DKIM CNAME records optional in that setup, while describing DKIM as additional protection. Cloudflare notes that without DMARC, receiving systems lack a domain policy for messages that fail SPF or DKIM. See Microsoft’s email authentication overview, Microsoft’s DNS setup guide, and Cloudflare’s DMARC guidance.
Forwarding may be an intentional part of the route, but its authentication impact depends on the forwarding service and message path. A generic MX or SPF edit is not a guaranteed fix for forwarding problems. Follow the forwarding provider’s instructions and test representative inbound and outbound messages. When delivery fails, inspect full message headers and any delivery error details; these can help distinguish a routing issue from an authentication or forwarding issue.
Choose the route before changing records
| Route design | What to verify | Migration consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Direct mailbox provider | The provider-issued MX targets and priorities, target resolution, and authentication records. | Changing MX directs new inbound mail to the new route; it does not move messages already stored by the former provider. |
| Forwarding service | Whether the forwarding service is meant to accept mail first, its required MX values, and its instructions for authentication and delivery. | Test messages through the actual forwarding path; a generic DNS change does not establish that forwarding authentication will work. |
| Inbound gateway or archive | Whether the gateway is intentionally the first MX destination and how it passes mail onward. | Do not remove or demote an intentional gateway record without confirming the designed route. |
These are routing choices, not a universal ranking. The right setup depends on which service should accept mail first and the delivery and authentication behavior the domain needs. Microsoft’s domain connection instructions also advise provisioning destination mailboxes before a Microsoft 365 cutover: MX changes affect new mail, while existing messages remain at the old host unless they are migrated.
