The exact steps depend on whether your Galaxy phone uses Google Messages or Samsung Messages, and Samsung Messages availability depends on Android version.
First, check your messaging app and Android version
Open the conversation and check its app name: it may be Google Messages or Samsung Messages. To check Android, go to Settings > About phone > Software information. Samsung says Samsung Messages is no longer supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer; it remains available and functional on devices running Android 11 or older. Samsung recommends Google Messages on Android 12 or newer. Samsung’s discontinuation guidance explains the change.

Samsung’s group-text instructions describe Samsung Messages on devices running Android 11 or older. Samsung’s notification guidance also notes that settings can vary by device and region.

- Open Google Messages and select the group conversation.
- Tap More, then Details or Group details.
- Tap Notifications and choose Silent.
This silences alerts for that conversation; it does not block messages or remove you from the group. Google notes that Android customizations can change how instructions appear. See Google Messages notification settings.

Mute a group in Samsung Messages
Samsung’s current guidance says you can mute notifications for a group conversation or delete the chat, but you cannot remove yourself from a group chat created by someone else. The precise menu path may vary, so open the conversation and look for its notification or mute control. The guidance applies to Samsung Messages on devices running Android 11 or older. See Samsung’s group-text instructions.
Choose between muting, blocking, deleting, or changing membership

Why leaving a group may not be possible
SMS/MMS and RCS groups do not have identical membership controls. Google’s participant-removal instructions apply to RCS groups, not SMS or MMS groups. Samsung’s guidance for Samsung Messages says you cannot remove yourself from a group chat created by another person. If the only goal is fewer interruptions, muting is the relevant control; deleting the conversation is not the same as leaving it.
