musslop is a free, open-source tool I built to loop sections of existing tracks, cue transitions manually, and export loops for TTRPGs and game prototypes. It uses Python, FastAPI, librosa, React, and the Web Audio API. The central idea is simple: a fixed song timeline cannot know when a tabletop scene is ready to change, so the person running the game decides when the music moves on.
Why build a music-looping tool for games?
A recorded track plays according to its own timeline. A tabletop scene does not. A tense conversation may last two minutes or twenty; an encounter may end quickly or stretch through several rounds. If the music changes sections at a fixed point, it can get ahead of the scene—or lag behind it.

musslop is designed around that mismatch. It lets a facilitator work with parts of existing tracks and choose when to cue the next musical moment. That makes the playback controllable without pretending the software understands what is happening at the table.
What musslop does—and what it does not
The project is described as a way to loop portions of existing audio and export loops for game-audio workflows. Its transitions are manually cued: the person running the game decides when to move on. That distinction matters when describing the result as adaptive. The playback can adapt to a facilitator’s decisions, but the tool does not detect a scene change, read game state, or autonomously choose music. A community post describes the idea as a tool that “turns any track into adaptive game-style music for your sessions” and “loops sections seamlessly, transitions on the beat.” Those phrases capture the appeal, but they are not guarantees that every track will loop seamlessly or transition on the beat.
How the Web Audio loop works
The Web Audio API is a browser audio-routing graph for processing and synthesizing audio, including in interactive applications and games. In a basic buffer loop, an AudioBufferSourceNode repeats a region of audio when its loop setting is enabled. The region is defined by loopStart and loopEnd; the end point is exclusive, so playback repeats up to—but not including—that endpoint. W3C Web Audio API 1.1 Working Draft, 22 September 2026.

Looping a region is not the same as jumping immediately to its beginning. Playback starts at the offset passed to start(); when it reaches the loop region, it repeats that region until stopped or otherwise ended under the specification’s conditions. This lets an application begin playback before the repeating section, then stay within the chosen region.

A technically valid boundary can still sound abrupt if the audio at the end and beginning does not fit together. Ordinary stereo recordings generally do not come with guarantees that their sections or endpoints will align. Purpose-built interactive music can instead be authored with compatible sections, stems, or transition points.

Looping a section is different from adaptive scoring

Game-audio guidance describes loading needed audio before it is required, keeping equal-length layers synchronized, and adjusting gain to move between intensity mixes. The W3C’s use cases also discuss accurately scheduled playback and automated crossfading of multiple sources. What the project is built with
The project article names five parts of the stack: Python, FastAPI, librosa, React, and the Web Audio API. The article describes the stack, but does not establish particular deployment requirements, signal-processing algorithms, or performance measurements, so those should not be inferred from the technology list alone.

- React: the named interface technology.
- Web Audio API: the browser audio technology used for playback behavior such as buffer looping.
The project is presented by its author as free and open-source software. That description does not, by itself, establish specific license terms or current maintenance status.
When this workflow fits—and when it does not
It fits when you want manual control
If the useful feature is choosing the moment a loop or transition happens, manually cued playback suits a TTRPG session or a game prototype where a facilitator or developer is directing the scene. It separates the musical decision from the track’s original duration.

It may not fit when transitions must be automatic
If music needs to respond directly to game events without a person cueing it, the project’s described control model is not enough by itself. Automatic response requires a game or application to provide state changes and playback logic to act on them; the project article does not describe musslop as listening for or interpreting those events.
It cannot make arbitrary tracks musically compatible
A loop point can be set in audio, but a seamless result depends on the sound at the boundaries. Transitions between sections or layers are more reliable when the material has been arranged for that purpose. With an ordinary stereo track, the tool can provide control over playback, but it cannot guarantee that the source material will sound as though it was composed for interactive transitions.
A practical way to think about the result
musslop addresses a specific and useful problem: giving a game facilitator control over when existing music repeats or moves on. Web Audio supplies the browser playback primitives, while the musical quality of a loop or transition still depends on the source recording and its boundaries. It is best understood as manually controlled music playback—not an automatic game-state soundtrack system.
