Mumsnet Denies Using AI to Write Forum Posts After Title Tool Error

Mumsnet says a long response schema unexpectedly appeared in its title-suggestion field. The company attributes it to a tool that sends drafts to OpenAI and denies using AI to write threads or replies.

Mumsnet says an unexpected block of AI-related response notes appeared in the title field of its thread-title suggestion tool. The company says the tool sends a user’s draft to OpenAI to suggest one title, but denies using AI to write forum threads or replies. That explanation is Mumsnet’s account of the incident, not an independently verified technical finding.

What appeared in Mumsnet’s title field?

A discussion about the incident described a long “AIBU Response Schema” showing up where a suggested thread title was expected. Readers asked why that material was behind the title generator and why it appeared in the title box. Its presence prompted questions about Mumsnet’s use of AI, but it does not by itself show that AI-generated threads or replies were published on the forum.

The account was reproduced from a Mumsnet forum discussion surfaced in a search result; the original thread could not be opened directly. The description of what appeared, and the explanation below, should therefore be understood as reported statements rather than an independently examined record of the tool’s operation.

How Mumsnet explained the incident

JustineMumsnet said the title-suggestion tool sends a draft to OpenAI to produce a single suggested title. In her account, a long set of response notes appeared in the title box instead of the expected title. She also acknowledged that Mumsnet’s initial explanation was incorrect.

JustineMumsnet said Mumsnet had opted out of using the submitted draft text to train OpenAI’s models. That is a statement by the company; the available account does not independently verify the tool’s settings, what happened to the text after submission, or why the unexpected output appeared.

What Mumsnet says it does not use AI to do

JustineMumsnet denied that Mumsnet uses AI to write threads or replies, and said the site had never tested AI-generated responses to forum threads. This is distinct from the title tool she described: a user may also use AI independently to help draft a post. The reported incident concerned Mumsnet’s title-suggestion feature, not evidence that the company generated the underlying forum discussion.

Earlier Mumsnet statements are context, not a full account of current use

In October 2024, Mumsnet staff said the site did not use AI to generate posts and that suspected bot posts would be removed and the poster blocked. In a separate forum response in September 2026, Mumsnet said it was not starting threads itself and described deleting threads where users were clearly using AI to their own ends. Those statements provide context about the company’s public position and moderation, but do not establish the full scope of its present-day AI use.

What the incident does—and does not—establish

  • Reported: a long response schema appeared in the title-suggestion field instead of an ordinary title.
  • Mumsnet’s explanation: the tool sent draft text to OpenAI for one title suggestion, and the unexpected notes appeared in the title box.
  • Not independently established: why the tool returned those notes, how the submitted text was handled, or whether any AI-generated forum post resulted from the incident.
  • Mumsnet’s stated position: it does not use AI to write threads or replies.

Because the primary thread was inaccessible and the explanation has not been independently verified, the clearest conclusion is limited: Mumsnet attributed the visible text to an unexpected result from its title-suggestion tool while denying that it uses AI to author forum threads or replies.
