Multipoint Bluetooth Headphones vs. Audio Sharing: What’s the Difference?

Multipoint is for one listener switching between devices. Audio sharing is for multiple listeners hearing one source. Here’s how Apple Share Audio, Samsung Dual Audio and Auracast compare.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multipoint connects one pair of headphones to multiple source devices; audio sharing sends one source’s playback to multiple pairs of headphones. Choose multipoint if you want to move between your phone and computer. Choose audio sharing if two or more people want to listen together. Auracast is a separate Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast feature for multiple compatible receivers.

How multipoint and audio sharing differ

Feature What connects Who it helps What happens to playback
Multipoint One headset connects to two source devices One listener using, for example, a phone and computer The listener switches between sources. In Google’s documented workflow, stop playback on one source before starting it on the other.
Personal audio sharing One source connects to two headphone sets Two listeners hearing the same content Both headphone sets receive playback from the source; compatibility and controls vary by platform.
Auracast broadcast audio One LE Audio broadcaster sends to multiple compatible receivers Groups listening in personal, shared or public settings The source broadcasts audio to multiple Bluetooth audio receivers.

Google describes multipoint as connecting headphones to two Bluetooth devices at once and selecting which source to play. Both source devices must already be paired, and playback on the first must stop before playback starts on the second. This is not a way to send one source’s audio to two listeners. Google’s Android multipoint instructions explain the documented workflow.

When multipoint is the right feature

Multipoint suits one person who uses headphones with two devices, such as a laptop for work and a phone for calls or music. The headset maintains connections with both sources, while playback comes from the selected source. Check the exact headphone model’s simultaneous-device limit and switching behavior; Bluetooth headphones do not all offer multipoint.

When audio sharing is the right feature

Apple Share Audio

Apple Share Audio lets someone wearing AirPods share what they are hearing with a friend using compatible AirPods or Beats. Both headphone sets must be paired with a supported iPhone or iPad. Each set can have its own volume level. See Apple’s Share Audio instructions for compatible devices and setup.

Samsung Dual Audio

Samsung Dual Audio sends playback from supported Galaxy phones to two Bluetooth audio devices simultaneously. Samsung’s US support instructions describe a two-device limit for One UI 2 and later. In that described setup, connecting a third Bluetooth device disconnects one of the two paired devices. Check the specific phone’s software and device support in Samsung’s Dual Audio guidance.

Where Auracast fits

Auracast is Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast audio: one broadcaster can send an audio stream to multiple compatible Bluetooth audio receivers. A broadcast can be open or closed, and each receiver can control its volume independently, according to the Bluetooth SIG’s LE Audio FAQ. This makes Auracast relevant when a group needs to receive the same broadcast, including in shared or public settings.

Auracast is not ordinary multipoint. The Bluetooth SIG distinguishes one-to-one point-to-point communication from one-to-many broadcast, and describes LE Audio Multi-Stream separately: it supports multiple independent, synchronized streams between a source and one or more sinks. Multi-Stream can support improved earbud experiences and smoother source switching, but it does not make broadcast and multipoint interchangeable. The SIG’s topology overview explains the point-to-point and broadcast distinction.

Compatibility is the key constraint: existing Classic Audio receiver products are not automatically compatible with LE Audio sources, although some products support both. Look for explicit LE Audio and Auracast support in both the source and receiving devices; a Bluetooth version number alone does not establish compatibility.

Choose by counting sources and listeners

  • One listener, two source devices: look for multipoint Bluetooth headphones, then verify the model’s device limit and switching behavior.
  • Two listeners, one source: use a platform-supported sharing feature such as Apple Share Audio or Samsung Dual Audio, checking phone and headphone compatibility.
  • A group receiving a broadcast: consider Auracast, but confirm that the broadcaster and every receiver support LE Audio broadcast audio.
