Multimodal AI describes the kinds of information a model can handle; multi-model AI describes a system that uses more than one model. They are not competing labels: one multimodal model can work on its own, and a multi-model system can combine multimodal and single-modality models.
What does multimodal AI mean?
A multimodal model can process and relate information from more than one modality. NIST defines it as “A model that processes and relates information from multiple sensory modalities that each represent primary human channels of communication and sensation, such as vision and touch.” NIST’s glossary attributes this definition to NIST AI 100-2e2025.

In current generative AI, common modalities include text, images, audio, and video. A model may take information in one format and produce an answer in another. For example, a user could provide a photo of cookies and ask for a written recipe, as illustrated by Google Cloud’s explanation of multimodal AI.
Multimodality is about the model’s capabilities and the information it can relate—not simply the fact that an application displays different kinds of content. A prompt containing both text and an image is one example of a multimodal interaction; Google’s Gemini API documentation shows how to combine those inputs.

What does multi-model AI mean?
“Multi-model AI” is useful descriptive language for an application or workflow that uses more than one model. It does not have a single settled formal definition in the cited sources, so the phrase alone does not tell you how the models work together.
For example, an application might send an image to one model for visual analysis, then pass the result to a language model to generate a response. The models could be routed in sequence, called for separate tasks, or combined in another way. Visual ChatGPT is a research example of a system combining visual foundation models for multi-step interaction.

How are multimodal AI and multi-model AI different?
| Question | Multimodal model | Multi-model system |
|---|---|---|
| What does the term describe? | One model’s ability to process or relate multiple information modalities. | An application or workflow that uses more than one model. |
| What should you inspect? | Supported input and output types, plus performance on your task. | Each model’s role, how data moves between models, and system performance, cost, latency, and integration needs. |
| What does the label alone tell you? | Not whether the model supports every modality or task you need. | Not how the models cooperate or which tasks each one performs. |
| Can it overlap with the other term? | Yes. A multimodal model can be one part of a larger system. | Yes. A multi-model system can use multimodal models, single-modality models, or both. |
How can you tell which term fits a system?
Ask two separate questions: what kinds of information can each model handle, and how many models does the application use? The first is about modality; the second is about system composition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- One model accepts text and images: multimodal describes the model’s capabilities. That does not, by itself, make the application multi-model.
- An application sends an image to a vision model and then uses a separate language model to respond: the workflow is multi-model. Whether either model is multimodal depends on its own supported inputs and outputs.
- A system uses several models, including one that handles text and images: both descriptions apply, but at different levels—the system is multi-model and that component is multimodal.
What should you check before choosing an approach?
Choose based on the task rather than the label. A multimodal model may simplify an application when one model can handle the required inputs and produce the needed output. A multi-model workflow may make sense when different steps call for distinct models. Neither label alone establishes which approach will perform better.
- Confirm the exact modalities. Check whether the specific model accepts and returns the formats your task requires. “Multimodal” does not guarantee support for every combination of text, images, audio, and video. AWS advises developers to inspect modality support for the individual model in its Amazon Bedrock inference API documentation.
- Map the model roles. For a multi-model workflow, identify which model handles each step, how outputs are passed between them, and what happens if a step fails. The term “multi-model” does not specify that architecture.
- Evaluate the actual use case. Compare task performance, cost, latency, and integration requirements. AWS’s generative AI model guidance treats model evaluation as use-case dependent and discusses balancing cost and performance.
The practical distinction
Use multimodal to describe what information a model can handle and relate. Use multi-model to describe an application that relies on multiple models. When both are true, name both levels and explain the models’ roles.
