Use one canonical article record and a separate Node.js adapter for every publishing platform. Each adapter should validate and convert the article into that platform’s format, send it as a draft where possible, and record the result independently. That design handles the differences between WordPress, Ghost, and DEV/Forem without pretending they share one publishing API—and gives you a way to recover when one destination fails.
What should the publishing pipeline do?
A dependable pipeline is more than a script that sends the same request to several URLs. It needs to preserve the editorial source, transform it for each destination, and track what happened at every destination.

- Store one canonical article. Keep the original title, body, summary, assets, tags, publication intent, and stable internal ID together.
- Validate the source and destination-specific requirements. Catch missing fields, invalid links, unavailable images, and unsupported values before sending a request.
- Render a destination-specific payload. Convert formats and map fields inside an adapter for that platform.
- Submit and record each result separately. Save the remote post ID or URL, state, attempt time, and any error for every destination.
- Reconcile uncertain outcomes. If a request times out, check whether the destination created the post before retrying.
This is an architecture guide, not a tested implementation or a delivery guarantee. The examples show the responsibilities and data flow; verify each platform’s current API contract against the account and version you will use.
How do the destination APIs differ?
Plan around each platform’s write interface, payload, authentication, and publishing controls. A shared pipeline can coordinate the work, but the adapters should own the differences.

| WordPress | The REST API includes posts and media resources. Post fields include status values such as draft, future, and publish, plus featured_media. |
Modifying private content requires authentication and appropriate permission. Confirm the actual site’s API setup. WordPress REST API Handbook and posts reference. |
| WordPress.com | Post creation and editing require authentication; follow the OAuth guidance for the relevant account and application. | WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress are related but distinct API environments. Test the actual destination. WordPress.com API getting started. |
| Ghost | The Content API is read-only. Publishing content into Ghost uses the Admin API, not the Content API. | The cited Admin API announcement is not a full current endpoint reference. Verify authentication and payload details for the Ghost version you run. Ghost Content API, Ghost JavaScript client, and Ghost Admin API announcement. |
| DEV/Forem | The article creation API accepts Markdown and documents fields including title, published state, tags, series, image, description, and canonical URL. It can create drafts or published articles. | The API documentation identifies itself as beta (0.9.7). Its article-creation endpoint documents a limit of 10 requests per 30 seconds; do not apply that limit to other endpoints or platforms. Recheck current behavior before launch. DEV API (beta). |
How should the canonical article be represented?
Keep editorial content separate from destination payloads. A durable record might contain these fields:
const article = {
id: "article-2026-041",
title: "A single editorial headline",
body: "Canonical source content",
summary: "Short description for destinations that support it",
coverAsset: { url: "https://assets.example/article-cover.jpg" },
tags: ["engineering", "publishing"],
intendedPublishAt: "2026-10-20T09:00:00Z",
canonicalSourceUrl: "https://example.com/original-article",
intent: "draft"
};
The values above are illustrative, not a prescribed schema. Use an internal ID that stays stable across edits and retries. Keep the canonical source URL distinct from any destination’s own URL: the former may be useful for attribution, while the latter identifies a created remote post.
Do not make one payload the master copy. A destination may use Markdown, another may need HTML, and a CMS may represent an image by an uploaded media ID rather than a URL. Preserve the source and render each form from it so that destination-specific edits do not silently overwrite the editorial original.

How should Node.js adapters be organized?
Define a small adapter contract
Each adapter should handle validation, rendering, submission, response parsing, and reconciliation for one destination. Keep transport coordination outside the adapter so the pipeline can run destinations independently.
class DestinationAdapter {
async validate(article) {
throw new Error("Implement destination-specific validation");
}
render(article) {
throw new Error("Implement destination-specific field mapping");
}
async createDraft(payload) {
throw new Error("Implement the platform write request");
}
async publish(remotePost) {
throw new Error("Implement only if the platform supports this workflow");
}
async findExisting(record) {
throw new Error("Implement lookup where the destination permits it");
}
}
These methods are an application design, not platform API method names. For WordPress, an adapter maps status and featured image as appropriate and handles the site’s media workflow. For DEV/Forem, it renders the body as Markdown and maps the documented article fields. For Ghost, it must use the Admin API and confirm the precise current request schema for the target version.
Make orchestration explicit
A coordinator can run adapters concurrently while retaining a separate outcome for each. The following is a simplified sketch: production code also needs a persistent store, timeouts, bounded concurrency, and platform-specific error parsing.

async function publishToAll(article, destinations, ledger) {
const outcomes = await Promise.allSettled(
destinations.map(async ({ name, adapter }) => {
await adapter.validate(article);
const payload = adapter.render(article);
await ledger.markAttempt({ articleId: article.id, destination: name });
const remotePost = await adapter.createDraft(payload);
await ledger.markCreated({
articleId: article.id,
destination: name,
remoteId: remotePost.id,
remoteUrl: remotePost.url,
state: "draft"
});
return { destination: name, remotePost };
})
);
return outcomes.map((outcome, index) => ({
destination: destinations[index].name,
outcome
}));
}
Promise.allSettled allows one failed destination to be reported without discarding other results. It does not make the requests safe to repeat or make the operation atomic. Do not mark the overall article “published everywhere” because one adapter succeeded.

Prefer a reviewable draft as the first automated action when the destination supports one. It lets an editor verify formatting, links, images, tags, and attribution in the rendered destination before publication. WordPress documents a draft status; DEV article creation defaults published to false. Confirm the equivalent Ghost workflow against its current Admin API documentation.
Scheduling semantics also vary. WordPress documents a future post status, but a timestamp and status still need to be mapped according to the destination’s behavior. Do not assume that a common field such as intendedPublishAt has the same meaning everywhere. Keep the editorial schedule in the canonical record and let each adapter decide how, or whether, to implement it.

How should failures, retries, and rate limits work?
Classify errors before retrying
Use the response class and platform details to decide what to do. The DEV API documentation describes 400, 401, 403, 422, and 429 response classes, among others; these should not all trigger the same retry policy.
- Validation failures: Fix the payload or source data before another attempt. Repeating an unchanged invalid request will not solve it.
- Authentication or permission failures: Check the credential, its scope, and account access. Do not retry in a tight loop.
- Rate limiting: Pause the affected destination and respect response headers when present. DEV’s documented article-creation limit is 10 requests per 30 seconds on that endpoint; it is not a universal platform limit.
- Transient server or network failures: Use bounded retries with increasing delays and jitter, then leave the item in a recoverable failed state.
- Timeout after submission: Treat the result as unknown, not as proof the post was not created. Reconcile before resending.
DEV’s API documentation says, “All requests must send a user-agent header.” Make that a requirement in the DEV adapter rather than assuming a generic HTTP client supplies an acceptable value.

Do not assume exactly-once delivery
The cited platform documentation does not establish a universal idempotency key or exactly-once guarantee across these destinations. A timeout can happen after a remote service has accepted a request but before your process receives the response. Before retrying, use the known remote ID, slug, or canonical URL to look for the post where the platform permits it. Record every confirmed remote ID so later attempts can distinguish “not created” from “created, response lost.”

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Use a per-destination publication ledger
Persist one row or record for each article-destination pair. Useful fields include:
- Internal article ID and destination name
- Remote post ID and remote URL, once known
- Current state, such as queued, draft, published, failed, or outcome-unknown
- Attempt timestamps and retry count
- Last error class and a redacted diagnostic message
- Payload version or checksum, so an operator can tell which content was sent
A queue or limiter per destination helps prevent bursts from one destination consuming another’s capacity. Keep concurrency bounded, and expose partial success in the job status so an operator can retry or reconcile only the affected destination.
How should canonical URLs and secrets be handled?
Set canonical attribution intentionally
DEV accepts a canonical_url when an article was originally published elsewhere. Set it only when the article is genuinely syndicated from that original and the destination’s editorial policy supports the intended attribution. Do not assume that this field exists or has the same search behavior on other platforms.

Keep credentials out of content and logs
Store API credentials in a secret manager or protected environment configuration, restrict access, and rotate credentials according to your operational policy. Redact authorization headers, tokens, and sensitive request data from logs. Save rendered payloads when useful for debugging, but exclude secrets and avoid logging private content unnecessarily.
What should be tested before launch?
Test each adapter independently and then test the coordinator’s partial-failure behavior. Use fixtures for payload mapping and a sandbox, test site, or drafts for integration checks.
- Required fields, links, image availability, tags, and format conversion
- Draft creation and the exact status transition used for publishing
- Remote IDs and URLs parsed correctly from success responses
- Different handling for validation, authorization, rate-limit, and transient errors
- Timeout reconciliation without creating duplicates
- Partial batch success, bounded retries, and rate limiting by destination
- Log redaction and the ability to resume a failed destination without resending successful ones
For Ghost in particular, check the current Admin API reference and the version deployed on the target site: the cited announcement establishes the write path but is not a complete current endpoint specification. For DEV/Forem, recheck the beta API documentation and behavior before release. API contracts and limits can change, so verify all adapters against the intended accounts before automating live publication.
