Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTurn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for your email, financial, and other important accounts wherever it is available. MFA adds a verification step beyond your password, so a stolen password alone may not be enough to get in. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) explains on its consumer “Turn On MFA” guidance page: “Even if an unauthorized user steals your password, they won’t be able to meet the second step requirement to access your accounts.” That protection depends on the method used; MFA reduces risk but does not eliminate it.
Where to find the MFA setting
Services may call the feature “Two Factor Authentication,” “Multifactor Authentication,” or “Two Step Factor Authentication.” CISA’s consumer guidance recommends checking each account or app that offers it.

- Start with your primary email account, financial accounts, and other accounts where unauthorized access could cause significant harm.
- Open the account or profile settings and look for a section named “Security,” “Password and security,” or similar.
- Find the MFA, two-factor, or two-step authentication option, then follow that provider’s enrollment instructions.
- Select the strongest method the service supports and that your devices can use. Check account and device compatibility before choosing a security key.
- Review the provider’s recovery instructions and keep them accessible. Recovery processes differ by service, so follow the current instructions for each account.
Which MFA method should you choose?
Not every second step offers the same level of protection. CISA’s MFA guidance for small businesses recommends phishing-resistant MFA and places the options it discusses in a general security hierarchy. The exact methods available vary by account and device.
| Method | What to know |
|---|---|
| Physical security key | CISA identifies security keys as its strongest option in the listed methods and recommends phishing-resistant MFA. A FIDO security key is one possible choice; verify that the service and your devices support it before purchasing or enrolling. |
| Authenticator app | If phishing-resistant MFA is unavailable, an authenticator app is a practical alternative. It may generate one-time codes or provide approval prompts, depending on the service. |
| Number-matching prompt | When an account uses push approvals, number matching can help limit accidental approvals during push-bombing attempts. CISA describes it as an interim mitigation, not a replacement for phishing-resistant MFA. |
| Biometrics | CISA notes that biometrics are usually device-specific and are best used alongside another method. Whether they count as an MFA step depends on the service’s implementation. |
| Text or email code | These familiar options are weaker than the stronger choices in CISA’s comparison. Use them when better options are unavailable, rather than assuming every MFA method gives equal protection. |
What risks remain after you enable MFA?
MFA makes account access harder when a password or PIN has been compromised, but some implementations can still be attacked. CISA’s October 2022 fact sheet on phishing-resistant MFA describes risks including phishing, push bombing, SS7 protocol attacks, and SIM swapping.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Phishing: A deceptive sign-in page or request may trick someone into sharing a password or verification code.
- Push bombing: Repeated approval requests can pressure or confuse someone into accepting an unexpected prompt. Do not approve a request you did not initiate.
- SIM swapping and SS7 exploitation: These threats can undermine some phone-based verification methods, which is one reason SMS codes are not as strong as phishing-resistant options.
Number matching can reduce the risk of accidental approval in some push-based setups, but CISA explicitly says it is not as strong as phishing-resistant MFA. Where the service offers a stronger method, prefer it.

MFA is an additional layer, not a substitute for a strong, unique password. CISA’s consumer guidance on strong passwords recommends strong passwords and using a password manager. Keep any recovery directions or backup options available according to the account provider’s instructions; there is no single recovery-code process that applies to every service.
