The usual calculation is total repair time divided by the number of repairs. To make the result meaningful, state what starts and stops the clock: organizations may count anything from hands-on repair work to the full interval from failure detection through testing and return to service.
What does mean time to repair mean?
MTTR summarizes how long repairs take, on average, over a specified period and set of repair events. IBM defines it as the average time to repair a system or equipment after it has failed. The metric does not describe how often failures happen; it describes repair duration under the measurement rules used.

Always identify the asset or service being measured, the observation period, and which events qualify as failures and repairs. Without those details, an MTTR figure is difficult to interpret or compare.
How do you calculate MTTR?
The common formula is:
MTTR = total time spent on repairs ÷ number of repairs

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For example, IBM illustrates the calculation with three total hours of repair time across two repairs: 3 hours ÷ 2 repairs = 1.5 hours per repair. That is an arithmetic example, not an industry benchmark.
The result’s unit follows the time unit used in the numerator. If the repair durations are recorded in minutes, the result is an average number of minutes per repair.

What time should count as a repair?
There is no useful comparison unless the clock boundaries are explicit. “Repair time” can mean active hands-on work, or it can include additional stages such as detection, diagnosis, notification, preparation, waiting for parts or personnel, reassembly, testing, and restoration. Sources use different practical boundaries, so do not assume that every MTTR figure includes the same stages.
Choose and document a start and end point that matches the question you are trying to answer. For example, an operations team tracking service impact may measure from failure detection until the service is restored; a maintenance team studying technician workload may count active repair work. Label the measure accordingly and apply the same rule to every event in the calculation.

Recovery-oriented terminology also deserves care. NIST’s CSRC glossary defines mean time to recovery as the average time needed to recover from a product or system failure, attributing the term to NIST SP 800-55v1 and SP 800-55v2. That broader recovery framing should not be silently treated as identical to an organization’s repair-only MTTR.
How is MTTR different from MTBF and MTTF?
| Measure | What it describes |
|---|---|
| MTTR (mean time to repair) | Average repair duration across a defined set of repair events. |
| MTBF (mean time between failures) | Average operating time between failures for a repairable system or product. |
| MTTF (mean time to failure) | Related time-to-failure measure commonly used for items treated as non-repairable. |
These measures answer different questions. MTTR concerns the time spent repairing; MTBF concerns operating time between failures. Failure rate counts failures over time, but by itself does not describe repair duration or operational availability.

How does MTTR relate to availability?
NIST SP 500-96 gives this availability relationship:
Availability = MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR)
In this model, a higher MTBF or a lower MTTR raises calculated availability if the other value stays constant. It is a relationship between the defined measures, not a guarantee of the availability a particular system will achieve. Consistent measurement boundaries matter: combining values calculated with incompatible definitions can make the result misleading.

How should you interpret or compare an MTTR figure?
A lower average may indicate faster repairs, but it is not automatically evidence of better outcomes. Check whether the compared events involve similar repair complexity, whether the data is complete, and how many events were observed. A few simple repairs can make an average look low even when complex incidents take much longer.
- Clock start: Is time counted from failure occurrence, detection, notification, or the start of technician work?
- Clock end: Does the clock stop when repair work is complete, after testing, or when the asset or service is back in operation?
- Included intervals: Are diagnosis, waiting or logistics, active work, reassembly, and testing included?
- Scope: Which assets, services, failure modes, and repair events are counted?
- Period and sample: What observation window and event count underpin the average, and are the events comparable?
Maintenance teams can use MTTR to spot process delays and monitor changes over time. A computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) can help record maintenance events and derive metrics, but the usefulness of the number still depends on consistent definitions and complete records.
What makes an MTTR report useful?
Report the result alongside the context needed to interpret it: the asset or service population, time window, number of repair events, failure definition, and clock boundaries. If the figure covers active repair time only, say so; if it includes detection through restoration, identify that interval. Keeping those rules stable makes changes over time and comparisons between teams more informative.
