If you want enough packs for repeated drafts or simply want to open more boosters, choose its Play Booster box. “Draft Booster box” is outdated terminology for new releases: Play Boosters replaced Draft and Set Boosters starting with Murders at Karlov Manor.
What is a “Draft Booster box” called now?
For current releases, look for a Play Booster box. Wizards of the Coast announced in October 2023 that Play Boosters would combine Draft and Set Boosters, with Murders at Karlov Manor the first set to use them. The intended blend was the Draft Booster’s Limited-play role and some of the Set Booster’s pack-opening experience. Wizards’ announcement quotes Head Designer Mark Rosewater: “Our goal was to combine the play experience of a Draft Booster with the fun opening experience of a Set Booster.”

Older sets may still appear in listings as Draft Booster boxes, but availability and value depend on the set and seller. For a newly released set, a Play Booster box is the relevant comparison.
What does each product include?
Prerelease Pack
A Prerelease Pack is a set-specific bundle made for the set’s Sealed experience. Official examples for Foundations and Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY list six Play Boosters, a foil year-stamped rare or mythic promo, and accessories. The FINAL FANTASY guide names a deck box and spindown die; the Foundations guide notes an Arena code card in select regions. These are examples, not a universal contents list: check the guide or product listing for the exact set you want. Play Booster box
A Play Booster box contains multiple boosters and is suited to drafting or opening packs. Wizards’ MTG Product Guide describes Play Boosters as best for Draft play or opening packs for fun. Do not assume every box has the same number of boosters: confirm the quantity on the listing for the specific set and configuration.
How do Sealed and Draft change the choice?
Choose the Prerelease Pack for Sealed
At a Prerelease, players open the pack and build a 40-card Sealed deck from their card pool, promo, and basic lands. Wizards describes these events as a player’s first chance to play a new set at a local game store. If you are playing at home, make sure you have basic lands; a participating store may provide them at an event. See the official Prerelease guide for an example of the format and pack.

Choose Play Boosters for Draft
In Booster Draft, players open a booster, select one card, and pass the remaining cards to another player; they repeat the process with successive packs and build decks of at least 40 cards. Wizards lists Booster Draft for two to eight players. A Play Booster box is a practical starting point for multiple draft sessions, but check that its pack count matches the group and event you are planning. The exact number of packs needed depends on the format being played. Wizards’ Booster Draft overview explains the format.

Check the listing before you buy
- Match the set and product name. For a current set, search for its Play Booster box rather than a Draft Booster box. Older-set Draft Booster listings are a separate resale option.
- Verify pack quantity and contents. Box counts and Prerelease Pack extras can differ by set; use the specific product listing or official set guide.
- Do not assume a box is cheaper per pack. Prices, inventory, region, seller, and pack counts vary, and no price comparison is established here.
- For home Sealed, account for lands. Have basic lands available unless your event or store supplies them.
