mpv is a free, open-source alternative to VLC if you want a minimal player that can be controlled with a small on-screen controller, keyboard shortcuts, and configuration files. That simplicity is the appeal—not a proven promise that mpv uses fewer resources or performs better on every device. VLC remains a strong choice for its broad format, disc, subtitle, streaming, and hardware-decoding support.
If you already made the switch and genuinely prefer mpv, a first-person account can explain why. The comparison below focuses on documented capabilities and the practical trade-offs, not an unverified claim of personal testing.

What changes when you move from VLC to mpv?
The biggest difference is the interface. The mpv project describes its software as “a free (as in freedom) media player for the command line.” It also says mpv has no conventional full graphical interface, but does provide a small controller over the video for basic playback. VLC, by contrast, presents a familiar graphical application with menus and controls.

It can feel less convenient if you expect to browse menus for every option or manage playback entirely with a mouse.
#1 Best Overall
The word “leaner” is best understood as a preference for mpv’s minimal interface and configurable design. The official materials do not establish that it consistently uses less memory, starts faster, or plays video more efficiently than VLC. Those outcomes depend on the device, operating system, file, settings, and software versions.
What mpv offers
Broad media support and playback features
mpv supports many media formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types. Its project documentation also describes high-quality scaling, color-management features, multiple video output APIs, and hardware-decoding capabilities. These are documented features, not a guarantee that every file or subtitle will work identically to VLC.

Configuration and scripting
mpv’s configurable design suits people who want to adjust playback behavior or build a customized workflow. Its command-line orientation can also be useful for scripting. The trade-off is that settings may require more effort than changing an option through a conventional GUI.

Hardware decoding requires attention
Do not assume mpv is using hardware decoding simply because your computer supports it. The project README says hardware decoding is not enabled by default. Check the README and the options appropriate to your platform before relying on it; available support and configuration can vary by system.
Where VLC may still be the better choice
VLC is also free and open source, and VideoLAN documents support for a wide range of formats, discs, subtitles, streaming, and hardware decoding. If you rely on those capabilities through VLC’s graphical interface, there may be little reason to replace it outright.
Rank #4
Neither project’s feature list proves that a particular file, disc, stream, or subtitle will behave the same way in both players. Keep VLC available for playback cases where it already works well, and check your own files and devices before making mpv your only player. VideoLAN lists current capabilities on its VLC features page and downloads on its official VLC site.
How to decide whether to switch
| Your priority | A sensible starting point |
|---|---|
| A minimal interface and configurable playback | Try mpv and see whether its small controller and keyboard-oriented workflow suit you. |
| A conventional graphical interface | Stay with VLC, or consider SMPlayer, which says it supports mpv and is available for Windows and Linux. |
| Disc, streaming, subtitle, or format coverage you already depend on | Keep VLC for those needs unless you have verified the same files and sources in your preferred alternative. |
| Hardware decoding | Check the relevant player’s documentation and settings; mpv does not enable hardware decoding by default. |
| Lower CPU or memory use, faster startup, or better battery life | Compare both players on your own device with the same media and settings. The official documentation does not establish a universal winner. |
SMPlayer’s platform and mpv-support details are on the SMPlayer official site.
