mpdris2-rs: Expose MPD Playback Through MPRIS2

mpdris2-rs bridges Music Player Daemon to the MPRIS2 D-Bus standard so MPRIS-aware tools can see and control MPD. Here is what it does, how to configure MPD and the session bus, and what remains unverified.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

mpdris2-rs is a small bridge that makes a Music Player Daemon (MPD) instance visible to software that speaks MPRIS, the D-Bus media-player standard. Once it is running and connected to your MPD server, MPRIS-aware tools can discover the player, read what is playing, and send basic controls such as play, pause, and skip. It does not replace MPD or add a new player: MPD still plays the audio, and the bridge only republishes its state.

What mpdris2-rs actually does

MPD has its own control protocol, and most MPD clients speak only that protocol. mpdris2-rs connects to an MPD server as a client, reads its state, and publishes that state on the session D-Bus using the MPRIS interfaces. Desktop media controls and command-line tools that expect MPRIS can then see MPD as a player. The project describes itself as a lightweight bridge, and that framing matters: the bridge needs a running MPD server to talk to, and it reflects that server rather than owning playback.

According to the project’s README, mpdris2-rs implements the MPRIS root interface, the player controls, the current queue exposed as a track list, and stored playlists. Those are the features to expect. Anything not listed in the README, such as seeking behavior or specific property support, should be verified against the running service rather than assumed.

How MPRIS fits in

MPRIS, the Media Player Remote Interfacing Specification, is published by freedesktop.org. It defines how a media player registers on D-Bus, where its object lives, and which interfaces describe it. A compliant player exposes the object at /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 and implements the org.mpris.MediaPlayer2 and org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player interfaces. The TrackList and Playlists interfaces are optional. This is why a bridge can work with different clients: they all rely on the same object path and interface names.

In practice this means the bridge is only as useful as the clients that read MPRIS. If a tool reads MPRIS, it can see MPD through this bridge. If a tool only talks to MPD directly, the bridge adds nothing for that tool.

Requirements before you install

  • A running MPD server that the bridge can reach, either over TCP or a UNIX socket.
  • A systemd-based Linux system with a user session bus, if you want the bundled user service.
  • Rust 1.88.0 or newer if you build from source; the README states this as the minimum supported version.
  • Cargo, for the build command cargo build --release.

The README notes that Arch Linux users can obtain the project through the AUR. Package versions change, so check the AUR listing for the current version and its build notes rather than relying on any version number written here.

Install and run

  1. Install the package from the AUR on Arch Linux, or clone the project and run cargo build --release in its directory.
  2. Copy the built binary to a directory on your PATH, as the README describes for source builds.
  3. Install the user service the README describes, then start it with systemctl --user start against the unit name your installation provides.
  4. Confirm the service is active with systemctl --user status for that same unit.
  5. Check that a client can see the player, as described in the verification section below.

Connecting to MPD

The bridge accepts either a host and port or a UNIX socket path for the MPD connection. If the explicit host option is absent, it uses MPD_HOST. If neither is set, it falls back to localhost:6600, which is MPD’s usual default. Socket paths must be absolute, and the README states that Linux abstract sockets are supported.

  • SIMPLE DIGITAL SIGNAGE - Automatic video playback with endless repeat and looping, and the ability to resume from the last stopping point. Configurable 90/180/270 degree video output rotation. Great for digital signage applications such as restaurant menu boards, lobby welcome videos, art and museum installations.
  • MEDIA FORMAT SUPPORT - Videos: MKV, MP4/M4V, AVI, MOV, MPG, VOB, M2TS, TS files encoded with H.265/HEVC, H.264/AVC, MPEG1/2/4, VC1, up to 2560x1440, 60fps, 100mbps. Subtitles: SRT, PGS, IDX+SUB. Music: MP3, WAV, FLAC. Photos: JPG, GIF, BMP, PNG

A typical local setup needs no changes. A remote server, or an MPD instance that listens on a socket outside the default location, needs the connection set explicitly. Use the exact option names from the README, since they are the authoritative reference for this bridge.

# Example: point MPD_HOST at an absolute socket path (adjust to your MPD configuration)
export MPD_HOST=/run/user/1000/mpd/socket

The README does not state a minimum or maximum MPD version for compatibility. The MPD documentation currently presented as stable is version 0.24.15. Treat that as the reference release for the MPD protocol, not as a tested compatibility range for this bridge. If your server runs an older or newer build, confirm the basic controls and queue view work before relying on them.

The D-Bus session address

The bridge reads the session bus address from DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS. If that variable is unset, it falls back to $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/bus. KDE and GNOME usually set the address automatically. If you start a graphical session through a standalone window manager, the variable may be missing, and the bridge may fail to register on the bus.

To check what your session uses, run:

echo $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
echo $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/bus

If the first command prints nothing and the second path does not exist, the session bus was not initialized. Start the bus for your session, or export the address before launching the bridge, then restart the service.

Verifying the player is visible

Once the service is running, list MPRIS players with a client such as playerctl:

playerctl -l

The MPD player should appear in the list. From there you can send a basic command, such as playerctl -p <player-name> play-pause, substituting the name shown by the list command. If the player does not appear, check the service status first, then the D-Bus address, then whether the MPD connection succeeded.

Media keys and desktop media widgets generally work through the same MPRIS registration, so a player that appears in playerctl -l is the usual precondition for them. Whether a given desktop routes media keys to it depends on that desktop, and the project does not document behavior for every environment.

Artwork

The project’s stated differentiator is artwork retrieval. The bridge uses MPD’s native readpicture and albumart commands and stores temporary artwork in $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR. According to the README, this does not require access to local music files, so artwork can work with a remote MPD server and with internet radio streams. No independent test of that behavior is cited here; it is the project’s own description.

Notifications

The bridge includes optional desktop notifications for track changes. Documented options cover disabling them, setting a timeout and a minimum interval between notifications, choosing the application name or icon, and templating the summary and body with playback metadata. Notifications are a separate feature. You can run the bridge for MPRIS control with notifications disabled.

How it compares with other MPD-to-MPRIS bridges

Two other projects provide MPD-to-MPRIS support. The table below records only what their own descriptions state. Where a project does not describe a feature, the cell says so instead of assuming it is absent.

What is not established

  • Maintenance status. Recent commit activity and release cadence were not established for this article. Check the project’s repository before depending on it for long-term use.
  • MPD compatibility. The bridge’s README does not state a supported MPD version range. Version 0.24.15 is the stable MPD documentation release, not a tested floor or ceiling for this bridge.
  • Package freshness. Package versions in the AUR and other repositories change over time. Installation details here describe the documented paths, not a specific current release.
  • Usage and performance. No independent benchmark or usage figure for mpdris2-rs is cited here.
