Firefox blocks many known trackers automatically: Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) is on by default, and it includes Total Cookie Protection. For most people, Standard is a sensible starting point. Choose Strict for broader blocking across all windows if you are comfortable troubleshooting the occasional broken login, video, payment, or other embedded feature.
What Firefox blocks by default
Mozilla says Standard ETP protections are enabled when you download Firefox. ETP uses a list of known trackers to block social media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies, fingerprinters, and cryptominers. In Standard mode, tracking content is blocked in Private Windows. Strict and Custom can extend tracking-content blocking to all windows. See Mozilla’s Enhanced Tracking Protection guide for the current desktop controls.

Firefox also includes Total Cookie Protection (TCP) in Standard ETP. It keeps cookies in site-specific jars, limiting one website’s ability to use cookies stored when you visited another site. TCP is built into Firefox; you do not need to install an add-on. Mozilla’s Total Cookie Protection overview explains the feature.

These modes are choices between blocking breadth and site compatibility, not a universal ranking. Mozilla’s descriptions establish what the settings do, but do not provide a current independent effectiveness percentage for comparing them.

When Strict mode blocks more than you want
Some pages rely on third-party components to provide a necessary feature. A component can be blocked along with tracking content, so a page may load but its sign-in, checkout, comments, or video may fail. Mozilla’s 2021 explanation of Total Cookie Protection describes the site-specific cookie approach and notes limited exceptions for some cross-site uses, such as third-party login providers.
What Bounce Tracking Protection does
In Strict mode, Firefox detects bounce trackers and clears their associated cookies and storage if there is no user interaction within a designated time. This targets a tracking technique in which a site briefly redirects you through another site; it is separate from the ordinary choice to block a tracker embedded in a page.

How to change Firefox’s tracking protection
- Open a webpage and select the shield icon at the left of the address bar. The panel indicates whether protection is active and whether Firefox blocked trackers.
- Open the panel’s link to Protection or Privacy settings to reach the global ETP controls.
- Choose Standard, Strict, or Custom. If you choose Custom, select the categories you want Firefox to block.
Firefox’s labels can vary slightly by version or platform; follow the Protection or Privacy settings link shown in the shield panel to reach the current control.
Fix a site that stops working
- On the affected site, select the shield icon in the address bar.
- Turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for that site using the control in the shield panel.
- Reload the page and check whether the feature works. Firefox adds the site to the exception list, while protection remains enabled on other sites.
- If the site works with protection off, consider turning protection back on for that site after troubleshooting; leave the exception only if the feature requires it.
A site-specific exception is narrower than changing the global ETP setting. If the problem persists with protection off, ETP may not be the cause.

DNS-over-HTTPS is a different privacy control
DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) protects the DNS lookup path: it sends domain-name lookups over HTTPS to a resolver rather than using an unencrypted DNS request. It does not block trackers that a webpage loads, and it does not make all browsing activity anonymous. Firefox’s privacy notice, effective May 4, 2026, says some users’ DNS requests go to a resolver that has agreed to Mozilla’s privacy standards, and that system logs are deleted within 24 hours. Mozilla also describes technical and settings data used to provide browser functionality.
Advanced note for administrators
Firefox’s administrator reference documents DoH provider configuration and exclusions for internal domains. Under the documented default policy behavior, Firefox tries DoH first and falls back to the system resolver; in DoH-only mode, a failed lookup becomes an error instead of falling back.
