No—moving from OpenAI or Claude to Amazon Bedrock is not always just an API endpoint change. Some Bedrock APIs accept OpenAI-compatible request formats, and Bedrock offers an Anthropic-native Messages API, but API features, model availability, IAM permissions and inference routing all affect whether a migration works as expected.
What can stay familiar—and what cannot
Bedrock offers several ways to invoke models. The right choice depends on how your application handles requests, responses, conversation state, streaming, tools and multimodal inputs. AWS recommends the bedrock-runtime endpoint for new applications, but changing the endpoint alone does not guarantee that your existing integration will work unchanged.

| Bedrock API option | When it may fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Responses API | An OpenAI-compatible workload that uses this request and response style | Stateful; check the model’s supported features before assuming parity. |
| Chat Completions API | An OpenAI-compatible workload built around chat completions | Stateless; feature support can differ from Responses. |
| Converse API | An application that benefits from a unified Bedrock interface across supported message models | Only models that support messages can be used with it. |
| Anthropic Messages API | An application that needs Anthropic-native request and response formatting | Do not assume every model or feature is available through this endpoint. |
“OpenAI-compatible” describes an API format, not a promise that every OpenAI feature, model behavior or parameter has an identical Bedrock counterpart. Similarly, using an Anthropic-native format does not by itself establish that a Claude model is available in your chosen Region or account.
Check model and API availability together
Before changing application code, identify the specific Bedrock model you intend to use and confirm both its supported APIs and how it can be accessed from your target AWS Region. Model availability is not universal across Regions, and a model may not support every Bedrock API or endpoint. The AWS model availability documentation tracks the applicable models, APIs and Regions or inference profiles; check it when implementing because the catalog can change.

- High-def entertainment — A 10.1" 1080p Full HD display brings brilliant color to all your shows and games. Binge watch longer with 13-hour battery, 3 or 4 GB RAM, 32 or 64 GB of storage, and up to 1 TB expandable storage with micro-SD card (sold separately).
- Thin, light, durable — Tap into entertainment from anywhere with a lightweight, durable design and strengthened glass made from aluminosilicate glass. As measured in a tumble test, Fire HD 10 is 2.7 times as durable as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2022).
- Stay up to speed — Use the 5 MP front-facing camera to Zoom with family and friends, or create content for social apps like Instagram and TikTok.
- Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.
- Record the exact model identifier rather than relying on a model family name.
- Confirm the intended API is listed for that model.
- Check whether access is direct in the chosen Region or requires an inference profile.
- Verify that the AWS account has the required access and model entitlements.
Choose where requests are allowed to run
A Region in your application configuration does not always tell you the full processing location. With an in-Region invocation, processing stays in the selected Region. Inference profiles can route requests across Regions: geographic profiles keep routing within a geography, while global profiles may route to any supported commercial Region worldwide.
Decide whether the workload must remain in one Region, may run elsewhere within a defined geography, or can use global routing. Then inspect the destinations of the specific inference profile from your source Region. Do not infer the profile’s routing boundaries from its name or from the Region configured in your client.

- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
Make IAM and organization policy match the route
Cross-Region inference changes the authorization checks. For a geographic cross-Region request, AWS requires permission for both the inference profile and the model in the source Region and in the profile’s destination Regions. An organization service control policy (SCP) can also prevent the request if it disallows a required destination Region.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When a request fails with an access or Region-related error, check the entire invocation path—not only whether the model appears in the console. Review the caller’s permissions for the chosen model and profile, the source Region, every destination Region used by the profile, applicable SCPs and account-level model access. Exact permissions depend on the selected model, profile and account policies; validate them against the live AWS documentation and your organization’s configuration.

Audit the Region that handled a cross-Region request
AWS says CloudTrail records cross-Region inference requests in the source Region. The event’s additionalEventData.inferenceRegion field identifies the Region where processing occurred. Teams can use this field to audit request locations and compare observed routing with their workload’s policy requirements.
Plan the migration in this order
- Inventory the existing integration. List the current model IDs, request and response formats, streaming behavior, tool use, conversation-state assumptions, multimodal inputs and latency expectations.
- Select a Bedrock model and verify access. Check the model’s supported APIs and availability for the intended Region or inference profile, then confirm account access and entitlements.
- Choose the API and endpoint. For new applications, AWS recommends
bedrock-runtime. Select Responses or Chat Completions for an appropriate OpenAI-compatible workload, Converse for supported message models when a unified Bedrock interface fits, or Messages for Anthropic-native formatting. - Set the routing boundary. Decide whether the request must stay in one Region, can route within a geography, or can use global routing. Verify the selected profile’s destinations from the source Region.
- Check authorization across that route. Review model and profile permissions in the relevant Regions, plus any SCP restrictions on destination Regions.
- Validate behavior in the target environment. Compare request semantics, streaming, tool support and error handling, and inspect CloudTrail when you need to establish where cross-Region requests ran.
Why “the model exists” may not be enough
A model appearing in a catalog or being available somewhere in Bedrock does not establish that your account can invoke it from your chosen Region using your chosen API. A working request depends on the model, API, endpoint, account access, Region or inference profile, and permissions lining up. Treat those as separate checks; resolving one does not prove the others are satisfied.
