If restarting your PC clears a slowdown only for it to return, the reboot has reset the symptoms—not identified the cause. High RAM use by itself does not prove a memory leak. To find what is happening, compare the right Task Manager measure over time, then use system-wide or process-level tools to narrow down the source.
Why Task Manager’s numbers may not add up
Task Manager’s process list is a useful starting point, but its memory figures do not represent every kind of memory use in the same way. Microsoft’s [guidance on troubleshooting high memory use] distinguishes a process’s working set from system virtual-memory use.

- Working set: The process-list memory figure Microsoft describes as private memory backed by physical RAM. It tells you about memory currently resident in RAM for that process.
- Commit size: The measure Microsoft says to check when assessing virtual memory used by the operating system, whether RAM or the pagefile backs it.
These measures answer different questions. A process list based on working sets is not a complete accounting of physical memory, and adding its visible figures does not necessarily explain total RAM use. If Windows reports a low-virtual-memory condition, Event ID 2004 can include details of the largest consumers at the time it was logged.

Check for a pattern before calling it a leak
A high reading at one moment is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Microsoft describes a leak pattern as memory use that continues to increase over time without being released; the increase does not have to be a straight line. A temporary peak or a single Task Manager snapshot is not enough to establish that pattern.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
- Record the circumstances. Note when the slowdown occurs, what applications or workload are active, whether Windows logs a resource-exhaustion event, and whether the PC remains responsive.
- Check Task Manager’s process and resource views. Use the process list to identify visible consumers, and check Commit size when investigating virtual-memory use rather than treating it as interchangeable with working set.
- Compare readings over time. Take observations during normal use and again when the slowdown returns. Record the time and workload alongside each reading; look for sustained growth that is not released.
- Use Performance Monitor to check whether a leak exists. Microsoft recommends checking for a leak before moving on to tracing its source.
For additional context, Microsoft’s overview of memory-leak troubleshooting separates investigations into user-mode applications and kernel-mode leaks involving drivers or Windows components. A high reading alone does not tell you which branch to pursue.
When the process list does not explain RAM use
If physical-memory use remains high but the visible process list does not account for it, inspect system-wide allocation rather than assuming the missing memory belongs to a particular app. Microsoft’s free RAMMap utility provides views of physical-memory use by type, process working sets, priority and standby summary, physical pages, and file data held in RAM. It can refresh its views and save or load snapshots.

- AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor
- Dynamic RGB Lighting: Individually addressable RGB lighting delivers vibrant effects through a sleek, understated panoramic diffuser
- Onboard Voltage Regulation: Onboard voltage regulation for reliable power at high frequencies
- Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
Take a snapshot during ordinary operation and another when the symptom is present. Keep the workload and time with each snapshot so you can compare what changed. RAMMap helps locate the category of physical-memory use; it does not, by itself, prove a leak or identify why an allocation is growing.
Microsoft lists RAMMap for Windows Vista and later client editions, and Windows Server 2008 and later server editions. That availability information is from the Microsoft page last updated March 26, 2026; check the current RAMMap page for the live tool details.

Investigate an identified process with the right tool
Once evidence points to a particular process, the next question is what kind of memory is increasing. Microsoft recommends VMMap for examining an identified process’s memory types. For a repeatable application or service leak, Windows Performance Toolkit—Windows Performance Recorder (WPR) and Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA)—can be used to collect and analyze allocation traces.
Tracing is advanced troubleshooting, not a routine first step. Some deeper tracing procedures require administrator access; heap tracing may also require a registry setting. Follow Microsoft’s application and service leak troubleshooting guidance for the supported Windows client and server paths. Do not disable services or drivers based on a hunch: first establish whether the evidence points to user-mode software or to a driver or Windows component.
Choose a fix only after narrowing down the cause
- If an unnecessary app or browser tab is consuming resources, close it and check whether the symptom improves.
- If the trend implicates an application or service, investigate that process and its allocation behavior rather than repeatedly rebooting.
- If system-wide views suggest kernel or driver use, pursue the corresponding kernel-mode troubleshooting path; a process-list reading alone does not identify a faulty driver.
- If memory pressure follows normal workload and the PC’s supported capacity is insufficient, a RAM upgrade may be a longer-term option. Confirm that the specific device supports upgrading and which memory it accepts before buying anything.
Memory is not the only cause of a slow PC. Microsoft’s performance troubleshooting guidance also points to startup activity, outdated software, low storage, malware, and older hardware. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to that page; the steps and support context can differ by Windows version.
