When replacing your router after a move, give the new Wi-Fi network the same name (SSID), password, and security type as your old one. Devices that saved those credentials may recognize the network and reconnect without being set up one by one. It is a useful shortcut, not a guarantee: some devices still need individual troubleshooting or setup.
Why reusing your Wi-Fi details can work
Wi-Fi devices typically save the network name and password they were set up to use. If the replacement router broadcasts a network with the same name and password—and uses a compatible security type—many devices can treat it as the familiar network. TP-Link recommends matching the SSID, encryption type, and password for its Tapo and Kasa devices; its router guide says most Wi-Fi devices reconnect automatically when the old network name and password are reused. This changes the router’s configuration; it does not transfer devices or their settings from the old router. Results depend on the device and its saved network settings.
How to set up the replacement router
- Record the old network details. Before switching off the old router, note the exact Wi-Fi name and password, including capitalization. Google notes that Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Google Home and Nest Help.
- Configure the replacement router with those details. In its setup interface, enter the same SSID and password. If the interface lets you choose the security or encryption type, match the old network’s setting where possible. TP-Link specifically calls out all three details for Tapo and Kasa devices.
- Avoid two active networks with the same name. If the old router is still broadcasting the same SSID, devices may connect to it rather than the replacement. During setup or troubleshooting, turn off the old router’s Wi-Fi or give its network a distinct name. Google recommends distinguishing or disabling the old router’s Wi-Fi when diagnosing connection problems.
- Allow devices to reconnect, then check what remains offline. Use each product’s app or instructions to investigate devices that do not come back online. A device may need its saved network forgotten, a reset, and setup again.
What to do if a device does not reconnect
First verify the replacement router is using the exact old network name and password, and check that its security setting is compatible with the device. Also make sure the device is not still joining a duplicate network from the old router. Then follow the device maker’s instructions: steps can differ by product, and some Nest or Home devices may require a factory reset and setup again. TP-Link likewise recommends resetting and reconfiguring its devices if the old wireless settings cannot be reused.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If you cannot reuse the old settings—for example, you want a different Wi-Fi name or password—plan to update devices individually. Depending on the product, that can mean forgetting the old network, resetting the device, and adding it again in its app.
Reuse the old settings or set up devices individually?
| Approach | When it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse the old SSID, password, and security type | You can reproduce the previous Wi-Fi settings on the replacement router. | Compatible devices may reconnect without per-device setup; some may still need troubleshooting. |
| Change the Wi-Fi details and update devices | You cannot or do not want to reuse the old settings, or a device fails to reconnect. | Expect device-specific steps, which may include forgetting the network, resetting, and setting up again. |
Do you need to buy a new router?
No. The shortcut is to configure a replacement router with the old Wi-Fi details if you are already changing hardware; buying a router is not required just to avoid reconnecting devices. No particular router model is needed for this method.
