Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo move Windows 11 to a new SSD, choose between cloning your current drive to preserve its installed apps and settings, or making a clean Windows installation and restoring your files afterward. First back up important data, verify that the SSD fits your computer and can hold the data being transferred, and keep the old drive intact until Windows has booted successfully from the replacement.
Choose between cloning and a clean installation
Cloning is the continuity option: a suitable migration tool copies the system to the replacement drive, usually retaining files, applications, and settings. A clean installation gives you a fresh Windows setup, but you will need to restore personal files and reinstall applications. Neither route is guaranteed to work with every computer or drive; check the tool’s support and your PC’s configuration.

| What matters | Clone or migrate | Clean install |
|---|---|---|
| Apps and settings | Intended to preserve them when the tool and disk layout support the migration | Removed; reinstall apps and reconfigure settings |
| Personal files | Usually copied as part of a disk migration; make a separate backup anyway | Can be removed; restore from backup |
| Main requirements | Compatible tool, correct source and destination, supported partitions, enough target capacity, and encryption compatibility | Windows installation media, correct target disk, matching edition, and time to reinstall apps |
Choose cloning if you want to continue using your existing setup and have a tool that supports your source and target. Choose a clean install if you prefer a fresh system or have a reason to reinstall Windows. If you are unsure, make and verify a backup before deciding.
Check the computer, SSD, and backup first
Confirm the SSD will work in your PC
Check the manual or support documentation for your exact computer model. Confirm the supported form factor and interface—such as M.2 NVMe or SATA—as well as available slots and installation constraints. An M.2 drive’s physical fit does not by itself establish that the computer supports its interface. Samsung’s internal SSD installation guidance and SSD upgrade guidance explain why the drive type and installation method matter.

Check capacity and disk layout
Review the system disk’s used space and partitions. The target must have enough capacity for the data the migration tool needs to copy, and the selected tool must transfer the partitions Windows needs to start—not just visible files on C:. Acronis describes disk cloning and migration in its disk cloning utility documentation and system migration instructions.
Back up and check activation
Copy important files to a separate drive or cloud location, then open some of the copied files to confirm the backup is readable. Microsoft explains how to copy files to external storage and verify they are present. A disk migration is not a substitute for an independent backup.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
Before a clean installation, note your Windows edition and confirm activation in Settings. Microsoft says a device with a digital license can reinstall the same Windows 11 edition and activate online; edition matters, so select the one matching your license. A major hardware change, such as replacing the motherboard, can require reactivation. See Microsoft’s guidance on activating Windows and reactivating after a hardware change.
If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, obtain and safely retain the recovery key before starting. Consult the current instructions for your chosen migration tool: encryption handling varies, and there is no single procedure established for every tool.

- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
Connect and install the replacement SSD
If your desktop has an open compatible slot, install the SSD using the computer or motherboard instructions. A laptop with only one internal slot may require connecting the new drive externally before swapping drives. The enclosure or adapter must match both the SSD’s interface (SATA or NVMe) and physical size; check the device and drive documentation rather than assuming one enclosure fits all.
Clone the system to the new SSD
- Choose a migration tool that supports your setup. Check its current supported drives, Windows configuration, and instructions. Samsung directs people upgrading to a Samsung SSD to its tool and software downloads; confirm the current product support before proceeding. Acronis documents cloning and migration, but its documentation alone does not establish current consumer availability or licensing.
- Connect the target SSD and identify both drives. Compare model names and capacities so you can distinguish the source system disk from the destination. Follow the tool’s current workflow.
- Select the source and destination carefully. Cloning is destructive to the destination in some workflows. Check the direction before you start, and confirm the target is the SSD you intend to overwrite. Back up the source disk first; Acronis also recommends a full source-disk backup before cloning.
- Run the migration without interrupting it. Do not disconnect a drive while the process is underway. Follow the tool’s prompts, especially if it asks how to handle partitions or encryption.
Install Windows 11 cleanly instead
- Create Windows installation media using Microsoft’s current instructions for reinstalling Windows with installation media.
- Boot from the installation media and select the replacement SSD as the installation destination. Check the disk carefully before changing or removing partitions; choosing the wrong disk can erase data.
- Install the same Windows 11 edition that is covered by the device’s license. If prompted for a product key on the same device with a digital license, Microsoft explains when you can continue without entering one.
- Finish setup, then restore files and reinstall applications. A clean installation removes existing files, settings, and apps on the selected installation, so proceed only after your backup is verified.
Boot from the new SSD and verify it
After migration or installation, start the computer from the replacement SSD. If the firmware does not select it automatically, use the PC’s boot-device selection or firmware settings to choose the new drive. Then check that Windows starts from the replacement, your needed files are present, applications work (or have been reinstalled after a clean install), and Windows activation shows the expected state.
