Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Alexa keeps making a notification sound, first ask what is waiting: try “What are my notifications?”, “What are my messages?” and “What are my reminders?” Then check the Echo’s light and the matching category in the Alexa app. A yellow indicator points to a message, notification or missed reminder; a green one points to a call or Drop In. The sound alone does not identify one universal cause.
Start with the light and the alert Alexa identifies
Look at the Echo while the sound occurs. Amazon describes a slow yellow burst every few seconds on Echo speakers as a sign that a message, notification or missed reminder may be waiting. Ask Alexa “What are my notifications?” or “What are my messages?” Amazon also recommends “What notifications do I have?” and “What messages do I have?” If one phrasing does not help, try another and check reminders. Amazon’s yellow-light troubleshooting and its Echo light guide describe the indicator, but neither maps every sound pattern to one cause across all models.

Missed reminders can leave a yellow light on an Echo or an on-screen notification on supported Echo displays. Ask “What are my reminders?” to check, or review them in the Alexa app. Amazon’s reminder guidance also explains that follow-up reminders can repeat every hour or day until you confirm completion.

Check the relevant notification category in the app
If Alexa identifies a notification, open the Alexa app and go to More > Settings > Notifications. Choose the feature or service and change its toggle. Amazon’s notification settings instructions specify selecting a category before toggling it. Turning off only the category responsible for the sound helps preserve alerts you still want.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Resolve a reminder that keeps returning
Check pending reminders in the app or ask Alexa what reminders are waiting. Edit, snooze or complete the relevant reminder. Follow-up reminders may repeat until completion is confirmed. Avoid resetting or deregistering the Echo as an early fix: Amazon warns that reminders set on the device may be lost after a reset or deregistration. See Amazon’s Alexa reminders guidance.
Check Announcements and communication settings
Announcements are one-way messages to Alexa-enabled devices registered to the account. To turn them off on a particular device, Amazon documents this route: Devices > All Devices > select the device > Settings > Communications > Announcements, then change the toggle. Amazon’s announcement instructions explain the feature and its controls.

Announcements and Drop In can be managed separately for a device. Turning off Communications disables all communication options on that device, so use that broader control only if you want to disable them all. Do Not Disturb is broader still for supported features and also turns off Announcements; a narrower notification or announcement toggle is preferable if you want other Alexa functions to continue. Amazon’s device communication settings guidance describes these controls.
Tell a notification apart from a call or Drop In
Color and pattern can help distinguish a pending notice from an active communication. Amazon describes a pulsing green light as an incoming call and a spinning green light as an active call or Drop In. If an unexpected call or Drop In is active, say “Hang Up.” You can also review voice history or change Drop In and Communications settings. Amazon’s Echo light guide lists the green indicators, and its device communication guidance covers controls.

To inspect Alexa activity, open More > Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History. History can be filtered by device, profile or date. This may help identify whether Alexa heard a request that started an unexpected communication. Amazon’s Alexa history instructions describe the review route.
Retrieve a message, then see whether the sound returns
When a supported Echo receives a message, Amazon says it plays an audio tone and shows a visual notification. Ask Alexa to play messages, or view and play the message in the Alexa app. After retrieving or acknowledging the item, check whether the indicator or sound recurs. Amazon’s Alexa device FAQs describe message retrieval.

Use the indicator as a clue, not a diagnosis of the sound
| Indicator | What Amazon says it can mean | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | A message, notification or missed reminder may be waiting. | Ask about notifications, messages and reminders. |
| Green | Pulsing: incoming call. Spinning: active call or Drop In. | Hang up an unexpected active call; review communication settings or voice history. |
| Orange | Setup mode or an attempt to connect to the internet. | Check whether the device is being set up or trying to connect. |
| Red | The microphone is off; on camera models, a red screen bar can also mean video is not being shared. | Check the microphone or camera state if relevant. |
| Purple | May appear briefly after a request when Do Not Disturb is on; Amazon also describes purple during initial setup with Wi-Fi issues. | Consider whether Do Not Disturb is enabled or setup is having Wi-Fi trouble. |
These are light-state clues, not guarantees about the exact audio cause. Amazon’s developer documentation explains that Alexa-enabled products can use both visual and audible indicators for new notifications, but it does not make every chime a consumer-facing diagnosis. Amazon’s notification indicator documentation is about product implementation, not a sound-pattern chart for every Echo model.
If the sound is still unexplained
Note whether the light is yellow, green or another color; whether an Echo display shows an alert; whether Alexa identifies a message, notification or reminder; and whether the sound occurs on one device or several. These observations can narrow the possibilities, but Amazon’s reviewed guidance does not establish model-by-model chime patterns. The official fixes described here use voice prompts and app settings; they do not require a replacement part or accessory.
