If the iPhone is already set up, Apple’s documented method requires erasing it and starting setup again. Check important conversations on the iPhone before resetting or trading in the Samsung.
Transfer Samsung messages during iPhone setup
Apple’s Move to iOS process transfers message history, including SMS messages, as part of moving content from Android. The iPhone must be at its initial setup stage, where you can choose to transfer data from an Android device.

- Prepare both phones. Charge them, keep them close together, and make sure the content you plan to move will fit in the iPhone’s available storage.
- Start iPhone setup. Continue through the setup screens until you reach the option to transfer apps and data, then choose From Android.
- Open Move to iOS on the Samsung. Follow its prompts and enter the code displayed on the iPhone to pair the devices.
- Select messages. Choose message history or SMS messages from the available content categories. Review the other categories and select any additional items you want to move.
- Leave the transfer uninterrupted. Keep the phones powered and nearby until the progress bar on the iPhone finishes. Keep Move to iOS in the foreground on the Samsung; leaving the app, taking a call, or using the phone for another task can interrupt the migration.
- Check the result. Open Messages on the iPhone and inspect important conversations before erasing, trading in, or deleting data from the Samsung.
Apple lists message history and SMS among the content that can transfer, but its guidance does not guarantee that every message subtype, attachment, or edge case will move on every combination of devices and software. Apple also says transfer time depends on how much content is being moved; it does not give a fixed duration for this process. If the iPhone is already set up
Apple’s Move to iOS process is part of initial setup. If you have completed setup, Apple says you need to erase the iPhone and start over to use this method. Erasing removes the iPhone’s current content, so first decide whether that reset is acceptable and make sure anything you need from the iPhone is backed up.

Apple’s manual-transfer guidance covers categories such as contacts, photos, videos, music, documents, and mail, but does not describe a manual SMS or message-history import into Apple Messages. Copying files or signing into an account should not be treated as a way to import the Samsung conversation database. See Apple’s manual-transfer instructions for the other content types it covers.
Choose wireless or a direct cable connection
Apple supports wireless transfer or a direct USB-C connection. Google describes the USB-C option as more reliable than Wi-Fi, though using it depends on the ports on your specific phones and having a compatible cable. A cable is optional; it does not change the requirement to use the iPhone’s setup migration flow for Apple’s documented message transfer.

For either option, keep both devices powered and undisturbed, and confirm the iPhone has enough free storage for the content selected. Google’s Android-to-iPhone guidance discusses the wired connection at Android’s switch-to-iPhone page.
Samsung Messages, Google Messages, and RCS are separate issues
Samsung’s US support notice says Samsung Messages is discontinued, with support ending in July 2026 for Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later; it directs affected users to Google Messages and says conversations transfer automatically when switching between those apps. That is a change between messaging apps on the Samsung phone, not the Android-to-iPhone migration. Use Move to iOS for the latter.

After the move, RCS availability is a separate question about sending and receiving messages. Apple says RCS on iPhone requires iOS 18 or later and a text-messaging plan from a carrier that supports RCS. RCS compatibility does not import historical Samsung conversations. Likewise, Messages in iCloud syncs message history among Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account; Apple does not document it as an Android import method.

Before you reset or give up the Samsung
- Open several important conversations on the iPhone and check that the history you need is present.
- Check attachments or other message details you especially need; complete preservation is not established for every phone configuration.
- Do not erase, trade in, or delete Samsung data until you have verified the iPhone’s Messages app.
